Original antique poster Congo Francais Office Colonial Scolaire Afrique / French Congo Africa Colonial Scholar Office, the poster features watercolours by Charles Fouqueray depicting the forest on the banks of the Ogouque, a factory, paddle steamer, passage of a rapid, domestication of elephants, arrival of ivory carriers in a factory, witch doctor, Pahouin village, camp of paddlers, landscape on the coast around Libreville, a caravan of porters, a convoy of canoes on the Oubanghi, smaller images of flora including cotton, manioc, corn and fauna with elephants, hippos, antelope, gorilla, boa and serval, the central part of the poster presents a map of the area marking Brazzaville the capital of French Congo, and other important locations - Leopoldville, Loango, Franceville, Ouesso, Bangui, Carnot and Libreville, with short articles on the soil, hydrography, climate, culture, colonisation, economic situation and history. A Victorian silver Aide Memoir, by Thomas Hayes, hallmarked Birmingham, 1893, with scrolling decoration, the fitted leather interior with ivory writing tablet, 11cm long, together with an Edwardian silver Card Case, by Colen Hewer Cheshire, hallmarked Chester 1902, with foliate decoration and sloping hinged top, 8cm long and a small silver cigarette case, gross total weight 7.3ozt (3). A William IV silver Teapot, by John Watson & Son, hallmarked Sheffield, 1835, of lobed baluster form, leaf capped scroll handle and spout, the handle with ivory insulators, cast foliate finial and raised on four cast supports, the handle and finial with corresponding hallmarks, 20.5cm high, approx. total weight 28.8ozt. Two similar rugs: 1. a North West Persian hand-knotted rug with central cobalt-blue medallion against a rose-coloured lozenge and with cream spandrels within larger blue and smaller red borders (223 x 124 cm). 2. central ivory medallion against a light-pink rose-coloured lozenge and with further ivory spandrels within blue, beige and red borders with stylised repeating patterns (147 x 103 cm).
A pair of vintage embroidered silk evening bags, probably Chinese, 1920s-30s: one ivory silk, the other black, both embroidered with bamboo, the pierced gilt metal mounts and twin-bud clasps set with hardstone cabochons, one with a faux pearl handle, the other a chain handle, the turquoise silk linings with a single pocket holding a silk-cased mirror, 18 x 15cm; together with a bone and ostrich feather fan; and a faux-ivory (early plastic) fan. A beautiful vintage wedding dress and veil: the wedding dress of Miss Eve Pitt-Payne, for her marriage to the actor Philip Latham at the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, Bromley, Kent, on September 10th 1960, made in ivory silk satin, embossed with flowers, with button detailing to the back, long sleeves with pointed cuffs that sit elegantly over the hand, size 8-10 (Miss Pitt-Payne was 5ft 6in. tall), with the original accompanying double veil with circlet of wax flowers and pearls, some champagne staining to the skirt. * Provenance: By direct family descent from the estate of the late Philip Latham (1929-2020), actor, best known for his roles in BBC TV Series' The Troubleshooters (1965-1972) and The Pallisers (1974), as well as President Borusa in the 1983 20th Anniversary episode of Dr. Who, The Five Doctors, in a 30 year career on stage and screen.
An antique Edwardian period christening gown: in ivory lace and silk satin, the lace decorated with honeysuckle flowers and leaves, 118cm. long, with accompanying under dress, lace jacket, lace over shawl / coverlet, bootees and bonnets. * Worn in 1910 by Miss Mabel Gwendoline Lemay Larcombe, and thence by direct family descent to the current owner.
