AN IMPORTANT AXMINSTER HERALDIC CARPET with a central armorial of the Medlycott family surmounted by a helm and a displayed eagle within a rococo mantling of leafy scrolls, the motto "DAT CVRA QVIETEM" in a pink ribbon below, the buff coloured field with borders incorporating leafy scroll work, blossoming branches and urns charged with summer flowers at intervals, including the corners, the outer ivory border with panels of flowering scrollwork and "C"-scrolls within an outer border woven to simulate gadrooning, 622cm x 591.8cmProvenance: Originally conceived for the Great Hall at Ven House and removed to Sandford Orcas Manor in 1929. According to family tradition the carpet was made at Wilton on the Axminster looms about 1830 as a wedding present from the Reverend Bradford to his daughter and son-in-law Sir. W.C. Medlycott, the 2nd Baronet.

British School (19th Century) Portrait Miniature of Evan Nepean, in Royal Navy uniform, watercolour on ivory, 8 x 6 cm, frame 12 x 10 cmHandwritten label to verso 'Evan Nepean commander R.N. 15 Augt 1785 - 20 Ap 1864 (later Rear Admiral) painted between 22 Oct 1823 and 18 Dec 1827'Note: Evan Nepean was the second son of Lieutenant-General Nicholas Nepean and nephew of the First Baronet, Sir Evan Nepean, First Secretary and then Commisioner of the Admiralty. He entered the Navy in 1798. In 1815 he became a Lieutenant and in 1823, a Commander. In 1841 he became a Captain and retired from service in 1862 as a Rear Admiral. Between 1839 and 1841 he was commander of H.M.S.Comus, an eighteen gun sloop on the West India station where he was principally employed in affording protection to British trade during the revoloutionary unrest in New Grenada. In 1844 he sold a large and significant collection of mainly pottery pieces, from Isla Sacrificios, off the Coast of Vera Cruz in West Mexico, to the British Museum.Ivory Exemption certificate number: XA4GBSEU Condition:Thank you for your interest in lot 89. The painting is framed under glazing – not examined external to the frame. The ivory appears to be in good condition- no obvious evidence for splitting or warping. The paint has some fading to the background, and to the navy blue of the jacket. The frame has some general wear and tear and the frame rest is frayed and a little loose at the join.

A Victorian rosewood and inlaid occasional table, by S & H Jewell, 30/31 Little Queen Street, Holborn, W.C., the circular top with inlaid boxwood and ivory floral and foliate decoration, raised on three outswept and turned columns, above a central finial base, on three spider legs with fan paterae inlaid supports, brass capped, on castors, bears oval label to underside, 68cm high, 56cm wide.
19th century A.D.. Curved with a thick double edge blade, handle composed of wood and iron, ornately decorated with lozenges, fastened by eight iron flat-headed rivets. See similar blades in Lebedynsky, J., Les Armes Orientales, Langres, 1992, pp.107ff. 118 grams, 32 cm long (12 1/2 in.). Private family collection formed in London, mid 1980s to early 1990s.Among the various Arab dagger groups, the one from North Africa is characterised by rather fine blades made in the Turkish-Persian style. Usually the handles (in wood, ivory and metal) feature a large rounded pommel in the guise of peacock feathers. This type is common in Morocco, Tunisia and all the way to Egypt, and is a type of Khandjar usually called Koummiya or Goummiya (a term later adopted in Spanish as Goumia, to indicate all the short Arab daggers).
