Roestraten visted England during the reign of Charles II. It is thought that Sir Peter Lely introduced him to the King. While in England, Roestraten moved away from the peasant genre scenes of his early career and, instead, developed a new style of still-life often including precious china, silver, ivory and lacquerware in his works. He became very successful in England and his paintings can be found in the Royal Collections at Buckingham Palace and Hampton Court.Part proceeds to benefit The Wallace Collection

ASSORTED COLLECTABLES comprising a pair of rosewood bellows with Chinoiserie boulle marquetry decoration, overall 34.5cm long; a Japanese black lacquered papier-mache three-division letter-rack, with transfer-printed decoration, 16.5cm wide; a Japanese dark red lacquered wood glove box, the lid with ivory and mother of pearl shibayama style decoration, overall 30.5cm long; and two trompe l'oeil paintings, comprising C.I.C Wirsing (Continental School, 19th Century) Wayside Topers, a pair, oil on waxed paper, each signed lower right, each approximately 21.5cm x 18.5cm, unframed, (5). Condition Report : Bellows lacking some tortoiseshell veneer, notably over grips, and some mother of pearl inlay; leather scuffed and woven band worn and incomplete but bellows still hold and expel some air; letter-rack generally good, but with wear to reverse around mounting hole; glove box with loss to inlay on lid, isolated chips to lacquer, wear immediately around key-hole and lacking key; Trompe l'oeil: One with loss to upper left corner; both with slightly blackened left-hand margin and surface rubbed.
