Rare Tekke Turkmen Animal Tree ensi, Turkmenistan, 19th century, 4ft. 11in. X 4ft. 2in. 1.50m. X 1.27m. Overall even wear with slight loss to ends; lacking selvedges; stencil number verso V7648. The four trees above the lower elem with four pairs of confronting animals at the base and three pairs of animals in the tree tops. The four panels in the field with candelabra motifs within a meander main border and ivory curled leaf guards; outer ivory border of sainak motif to three sides leading to the walnut brown lower elem panel. Finely woven with velvety wool in a rich palette; soft handle. Two remarkably similar animal tree examples are published, one in Jourdan, U. op cit. pp. 112-113; pl. 58 and another in Pinner, R. Turkoman Studies I, p. 263, pl. XV and in this publication a whole chapter (pp. 204-248), written by the author, is devoted to animal tree rugs, entitled The Animal Tree and The Great Bird in Myth and Folklore. A third example, also with the same animal tree format as our piece, is published in Azadi et al, op cit. pp. 48-49; pl. 22.

Malayer 'lion' prayer rug, north west Persia, early 20th century, 6ft. 3in. X 4ft. 6in. 1.91m. X 1.37m. Overall wear with colour run in places; small holes and splits; losses to both ends. Ivory mihrab with large central cypress tree with lions, peacocks and deer; other small animals; a cypress tree to each side of the mihrab.
Kizil Ayak pictorial mosque-design rug, north Afghanistan, early 20th century, 4ft. 9in. X 3ft. 1in. 1.45m. X 0.94m. Overall even wear with slight loss to ends. Ivory field woven with a representation of the Blue Mosque at Mazar-i-Sharif, north Afghanistan. Soft handle. Note: this piece is woven with a Salar Khani design outer border and it is entirely possible that it could in fact be attributed to the Baluchi of north east Persia, especially as it has a 'Baluchi' palette. Cf. Parsons, R. D. Op cit. P. 97 pl. 67A for a very similar example.
