ËœTHE SILVER AND IVORY-MOUNTED TIPSTAFF FOR THE TOWN OF HASTINGS, LONDON, 1906, PRESENTED BY THE TOWN TO HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES IN 1927 AT THE OPENING OF THE WHITE ROCK PAVILLION with turned ivory body, silver finial cast and chased with the town arms of Hastings surmounted by an openwork crown, and the base fitted with an engraved slender paddle finial, decorated with an anchor on the reverse 25.5 cm; 10 in This tipstaff is described in the Hastings and St. Leonards Observer of April 2, 1927. It was presented to the Prince of Wales at the opening of the White Rock Pavillion by one Mr James Chatfield, then the oldest fisherman of that town. It has been modelled on the badge of office of the Hasting's Water Bailiff, that ceased to exist as an office from the early 18th century. The original tipstaff is preserved in the Hastings Borough Museum and was discovered by Mr Charles Dawson of Lewes who gained renown for his discovery of the Piltdown skull. A copy of the newspaper article is included with this lot.

The design is said to have been influenced by the 1st Duke of Wellington, who is known to have owned and worn several different examples of this form.
