A French carved ivory diptych panel, the Virgin in Glory, possibly by the Master of the Berlin Triptych, mid 14th century, 10 x 6cm. There are great similarities between this panel and the Virgin in Glory and the Crucifiction diptych by the Berlin Master. Joseph Natanson in Gothic Ivories of the 13th & 14th centuries, Alec Tiranti Ltd, 1951, states that '...In the search for a refined composition the master uses curves in profusion and both figures and draperies follow lines of exaggerated fluency. The heads bend, the shoulders and hips swing in opposite directions, the feet slide far away from the elongated bodies... The architecture is in harmony with the preciousness of the composition and crockets of very elaborate form run along the edge of the gables like tongues of fire...'.
