He was active in drawing Irish Catholics and Protestants together in the United cause, and in soliciting French assistance for a general insurrection. In November 1798, on his second attempt to land in Ireland with French troops and supplies, he was captured by British naval forces. The United Irish risings of the summer had already been crushed. In his Journal entry for 27 September, Baron von Closen referred to a rumour from America of Mrs Doyle's affair with Lord Rawdon and how he found Lieutenant-Colonel Doyle to have been 'a very easy-going fellow', suggesting that the affair might have been accepted by her husband. After several negotiations, Lieutenant-Colonel Doyle was exchanged for 'Sieur Ternan' and the Doyles finally reached English soil in 1782.Despite the alleged affair with Rawdon, Frances and Welbore went on to have three children. Their sons, Francis Hastings (1783-1839) and Carlo (b.1787) both became Major Generals in the army. The former became a baronet in 1828. The second began on 15 February, finished on 21 February and delivered on 28 February (costing £10/10/- presumably for both miniature and frame). Both miniatures were framed by Flower. The overlapping time frame of the two miniatures implies that Wood was commissioned right from the beginning to paint two versions. In his fee book, Wood describes the sitter as, 'about 38 years old, shows chiefly right side and looking on'.In this portrait miniature, Henry Davis is wearing his Lieutenant Colonel uniform - a rank he obtained in the 25th Light Dragoons in January 1800. In June 1799 Colonel Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, raised a military force in the north of Mysore, comprising the 25th Light Dragoons and the 73rd and 77th Regiments of Foot. Details of Lieutenant Colonel Davis' military history are limited but it is fair to assume, he served as part of this operation. Oval, 44mm (1 3/4in) highFootnotes:Captain Deane travelled to India with his wife, Ann Deane (1770-1847) in 1799. The couple left behind their eldest son, Charles, so that he could be educated in England but took with them a younger child, John Bathurst Deane. Little is known of the first period of the Deanes' residence in India. However, in 1804 Ann returned to England to place John in school, then sailed back to India with Charles, by then aged 14. Ann rejoined Captain Deane at Calcutta, and the couple lived in India for a further ten years. Captain Deane was employed by the East India Company as a District Collector and Ann accompanied him on several long tours of the Company's recently acquired northern provinces in Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. These tours subsequently became the focus of Ann's published narrative, which details the family's travels across India between 1805-1811. Ann returned to England in 1814, possibly as a result of escalating tensions between the East India Company and the Maratha Confederacy, which culminated in the Third Anglo-Maratha War of 1817-18. Captain Deane remained behind and died in India in 1815.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: Y ФY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the UK, see clause 13.Ф This lot contains or is made of ivory and cannot be imported into the USA or any country within the EU.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Y&nbspA FINE VICTORIAN OXIDISED BRASS FORTIN-TYPE MERCURY FORECASTING BAROMETERGEORGE S. WOOD, LIVERPOOL, CIRCA 1880Constructed with central large-bore tube flanked by silvered scales applied to separate ebonised moulded panels calibrated in barometric inches 0-32 and with rack and pinion adjusted Vernier slide to right hand side, opposing an arrangement of three plates engraved with detailed forecasting predictions within fine scroll engraved margins and incorporating recording slide labelled SET AT, 9 A.M. YESTERDAY to top, the apex with further applied bridging plate signed G.S. Wood, LATE ABRAHAM & Co., OPTICIAN, LIVERPOOL, the base with substantial cylindrical cistern incorporating glazed collar enclosing ivory level pointer between screw-clamped collars over fine level adjustment screw to underside, the instrument mounted onto the backboard of a full-height half-round glazed case opening at the front, with domed cupola surmounted with a reeded gilt brass ball finial and conforming inverted dome to base, (mercury removed).130cm (51ins) approx. high, 20.5cm (8ins) wide, 15cm (8ins) deep. George S. Wood is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as taking over the business of Abraham Abraham and Company located at 20 Lord Street, Liverpool in 1875 and working until 1894. The current lot is made to the principles laid down by Nicholas Fortin (1750-1831) and incorporates a glazed cistern so that the level can be calibrated via the adjustment screw to the base against an inverted conical ivory cone in the cistern in order to obtain consistency in the readings. This particular type of barometer provides an accurate reading hence was generally adopted for laboratory use throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. The combination of comprehensive scales complete with detailed observations to assist in forecasting (based on those laid-out by Admiral Fitzroy in the 1850's) and fine bow-fronted case suggests that the current lot was either made to be exhibited by the maker (possibly in his own showroom) or for a wealthy client or institution. Condition Report: Instrument appears complete with the exception of mercury and two (of the three) brass cistern securing rods and screws (for holding the base of the cistern tight against the cylindrical glass sleeve) which are now unfortunately missing. The silvering to the register plates has some patchy discolouration but engraving is fine and crisp. The case is in good original condition with noticeable faults apparently only limited to the finial being a little bent. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 18

Y&nbspA REGENCY BRASS MOUNTED MAHOGANY MARINE MERCURY STICK BAROMETERBARRAUDS, LONDON, CIRCA 1825With brass suspension ring above ivory plate engraved Barrauds, London and hinged rectangular door enclosing canted brass Vernier register plates annotated with the usual observations, the inside of the door applied with mercury Fahrenheit thermometer, the rectangular section trunk with gimbal pivot holes to the slightly bowed sides above ogee-turned base fitted with stepped moulded cylindrical lacquered brass cistern cover beneath, now with later brass gimbal bulkhead/wall-mount.94cm (37ins) high excluding top ring, the cistern 5.5cm (2.25ins) diameter. Paul Phillip Barraud (born 1752) worked with his father at first until his death in 1795 after which he turned his attention more towards chronometers. Using the valuable experience gained whilst working on Mudge's timekeepers with W. Howells and G. Jamieson to good effect, he became very successful. After his death in 1820 the business was continued by his sons taking John Richard Lund, a former apprentice of John Pennington (who developed the auxiliary compensation balance weight to correct for middle temperature changes), into partnership in 1838. Condition Report: Tube is filled and providing a reasonable reading; the column rises to the top when tilted with only a very small amount of air evident. The thermometer is intact and working however the tube is probably a replacement. The Vernier slide has been converted to be manually adjusted (the rack and pinion adjustment mechanism is no longer present). The scales have been polished back to brass but the engraving is still legible. The case is in sound condition with faults limited to a few bumps and scuffs most noticeably to the trunk just above the gimbals. The finish is a little flat hence would benefit from a polish; the brass work is also somewhat tarnished (the top ring is a replacement but the post appears original). As catalogued the gimbals are 20th century replacements. Condition Report Disclaimer
