Circle of Joseph Highmore (1692-1780), "Daughters of Crisp Molineaux, Elizabeth, afterwards Lady Barnaby -", portrait of two girls, three-quarter length, each standing, one in ivory, the other in pink satin dress, holding a floral garland, a doe behind, draped landscape background, Inscribed on an old label, oil on canvas, 127.5cm by 137cm. Contained within its original 18th century carved giltwood frame. The artist studied at Kneller`s Academy and was a polished portraitist by the 1720`s. After 1730, his work became more Rococo in its style. From 1743 to 1744, he made a series of twelve illustrations for his friend, Samuel Richardson`s novel Pamela. In 1762, Highmore abandoned painting, retiring to Canterbury and devoted himself to writing. See illustration

An unusual Georgian Officer`s Midshipmans Dirk having curved blade, approx. 41cms, which is half blued with crown, GR, sunbursts etc in gilt. The hilt supports a half circular guard showing anchor and Britannia (?) device, grip is of ivory with a gilt brass lion head pommel and back strap, complete with black leather scabbard and gilt mounts. ++hilt has small piece of ivory missing, ornamental end of quillon on one side missing, no chain. Blade dirty but in very good order, guard has been buckled (but repairable) scabbard is in good condition for age with service wear to gilding and leather
