NO RESERVEλ A RARE CHINESE RHINOCEROS HORN ‘ZHANG QIAN ON A RAFT’ POURING VESSEL 17TH/18TH CENTURY Carved as a large log raft with naturalistic knots and stems tapering to a thick branch at the prow forming the spout, the back of the raft carved as a section of gnarled trunk forming the handle, carved in high relief with the scholarly figure of Zhang Qian in flowing robes reclining reading a book with his fly whisk trailing down the side of the vessel, the underside of the raft carved with a low-relief pattern of crashing waves with the occasional spray rising up the sides, the horn of a dark treacle colour, 155g, 17.8cm. Please note that an export licence will only be granted for rhinoceros horn pieces, should the hammer price meet or exceed the value of 100 USD per gram of the item’s weight. 注:若閣下需辦出口證書,落槌價須超過每克100美金。 PLEASE NOTE THIS LOT IS TO BE OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE. The present lot is an example of the ‘raft’ type of rhinoceros horn carving, considered to be among the most difficult to execute as it is the only shape that requires the horn to be worked horizontally by making use of the thick skirt on the shorter curve of the horn. The technical aspects of carving this type of rhinoceros horn vessel are discussed in further detail in J Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, pp.77-81, which also provides a comprehensive list of international institutions with related raft vessels including four in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, of which one is illustrated, op. cit., pl.47. Among the other comparables are the example in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, included in the exhibition Jiangxin yu xiangong. Ming Qing diaoke zhan (Uncanny Ingenuity and Celestial Feats: The Carvings of Ming and Qing Dynasties), no.30; three in the National Palace, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, nos.118-120; one in the Shanghai Museum and another in the Harvard University Art Museum, both illustrated in T Fok, Connoisseurship of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, nos.70-71; and two others in private collections, illustrated by T Fok, op. cit., nos.73-74. The figure of Zhang Qian, who typically features on this type of rhinoceros horn carving, is a semi-legendary Han dynasty statesman who lived during the 2nd century BC. Sent out under the Emperor Wu to gather intelligence on Central Asia, he played a significant part in initiating the trade routes that would become the Silk Road, establishing the first transcontinental trade between East and West. Zhang Qian’s reports on his missions were later compiled in the 1st century BC by the historian Sima Qian, revered as the founder of Chinese historiography. Subsequently Zhang Qian was further elevated to legendary status in the poetry of the Yuan dynasty, which immortalised him as riding a log raft to the source of the Yellow River and beyond, ultimately reaching the Milky Way. 十七/十八世紀 犀角雕張騫乘槎擺件 注:本拍品不設底價。

Stylish 1950s top-down motoring offering more power, comfort and value compared to its European contemporaries. A nicely mellowed, older restoration from eight years of UK-ownership. Long before the Cadillac became known as the softly sprung, luxuriously appointed land yacht we recognise from the 1960s and 1970s, it had fought a fierce battle to be considered a serious sports car among its American contemporaries during the late 1940s. The few pre-war designed European sportscars that found their way Stateside barely tempted the domestic market who adored the swooping, if rather rotund, flanks, the acres of chrome, refinements like electric windows and all powered by a gruffling V8. They made European sports cars seem somewhat flimsy and it must have been therefore a bewildering sight to see Briggs Cunningham at the wheel of a new, outwardly standard 1950 Cadillac Coupe alongside the Ferraris, Aston Martins and Jaguars on the grid of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Finishing tenth overall, the Cadillac averaged 81.5mph for the entire 24-hour event with top speeds of around 120mph achieved on the Mulsanne Straight.Domestically, 1950 was a significant year for Cadillac too, as they finally surpassed Packard in sales and would go on to dominate the American luxury market for several generations. Along with styling, elegance, and luxury, the performance aspect of Cadillac was taken to new heights with the launch of the 62 Series and these models are regarded as the most typical examples of 1950s styling with swooping lines and acres of chrome. Naturally, a luxuriously appointed convertible was the car of choice for the successful and remains the indelible image of the era’s 'American Dream'.Built in 1952, this fabulous Cadillac was restored before arriving in the UK and subsequently registered here on 1st September 2013 to the first of just two keepers. The 1952 cars were powered by an all-new 331ci (5.4-litres) OHV V8 featuring wedge-shaped combustion chambers, 'slipper' pistons and hydraulic valve lifters, and now offered a respectable 160bhp. Well presented in ivory with a glorious bright red interior, it has been well maintained by our vendor since his purchase in 2016 as the invoices on file testify. Offered from the eclectic collection of our well-regarded vendor, an auction regular of many years standing who is downsizing due to advancing years, it's accompanied by the aforementioned maintenance receipts and Swansea V5C.This third-generation Series 62 Cadillac is a piece of classic Americana and we think that it's a seriously tempting proposition given the realistic guide price and sheer scale of this impressive American icon.Specification Make: CADILLAC Model: CONVERTIBLE Year: 1952 Chassis Number: 526282784 Registration Number: 849 YUX Transmission: Automatic Drive Side: Left-hand Drive Make: Only LHD Interior Colour: Red Click here for more details and images

With outputs of 228bhp and 139bhp equivalent, the i8 accelerates from 0-60mph in under 4.4 seconds and is electronically limited to 155mph. Its sleek coupé design features 'butterfly' doors and a carbon fibre-reinforced passenger cell, contributing to its low drag coefficient and fuel efficiency at high speeds. Whether silently gliding on electric power or unleashing its speed with a flick of a switch, the i8 marks a significant step towards the future, challenging traditional notions of automotive performance. Here is a stunning BMW i8 finished in Protonic Blue over Frozen Grey metallic paintwork, complemented by an Ivory White BMW 'i-Spheric' perforated full leather interior.
