A boxed and glazed gorget and epaulette belonging to Leiutenant James Murray 20th Regiment, together with a framed print of a photograph of him. The gilt gorget of universal pattern, the silver lace epaulette with crowned XX button. Good Condition. Plate 9. Note: The caption under the picture and ivory tablet with the boxed items reads “Lieutenant James Murray XX Regt mortally wounded at the Battle of “Orthes” Feb 27th 1814. Died of wounds March 7th 1814 aged 20 years. Eldest son of John Murray of Wooplaw, Roxburghshire.
A circular turned oak memorial patch box, the lid inset with a gold coloured disc inscribed “Capt. Sam Walker, 3rd Foot Guards, fell at Talavera 28 July 1809”, ivory surround, inside the lid, in the back of the disc, is a woven lock of the officer’s hair, inside the base of the box is a sentimental memorial m/s verse, diameter 2¾”. A nicely carved ivory standing figure of Wellington, wearing a knee length cloak, integral round base 6”; and a small figure of Napoleon, well detailed, in cocked hat, tailcoat with epaulettes, with sword, on integral pedestal and darkwood base (detached), 4¼” overall. Good Condition, Plate 22 for Wellington figure only
An oval ivory trinket box, the lid carved with Napoleon on horseback, with figures in the background going in the opposite direction, the sides carved with panels of stylized foliage 2¼” x 1¾ x 1-5/8”; and a rectangular section of bone carved with head of Napoleon on crown over shield. Good Condition
An officer’s mameluke hilted sword, curved, shallow fullered blade, 30”, marked Solingen on backstrap, steel crossguard with langets and ribbed knop finials, lined backstrap, ivory grips with brass rosette studs, in its steel scabbard with 2 rings, engraved at the top (faint) “Worn by Lt. Col Sir Henry Hollis Bradford KCB, during the Peninsula War and at the Battle of Waterloo, where he was mortally wounded”. Good Condition (scabbard painted black) Plate 63. Note: Lt Colonel Sir Henry Hollis Bradford, 1st Foot Guards, died at La Vacherie in France on December 7th 1816 from wounds received at Waterloo, his name appears on the Regimental plaque at Hougoumont.
An impressive and important presentation mameluke sword from Lord Paget, curved flat blade 31”, double edged at point, frosted within polished edges for entire length on both sides, and on one side a presentation panel “From Major General Lord Paget to his Aide de Camp, Captn Diggens, 11th Lt Dragoons, Feby 1802.”, panelled copper gilt crossguard with langets and bud terminals, with toothed chevron border and a six pointed star in circle on one side in the centre, lined backstrap to ivory grips inset with gilt rosettes, in its leather covered scabbard with long panelled locket and chape, bulbous middle bud and matching mount for suspension rings. Good to Very Good Condition, retaining a little original gilt. Plate 63
A presentation light company officer’s sword of The 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment from Lieut Col Herford, curved blade 27½”, etched with crowned GR cypher and trophies within floral and foliate panels, heavy gilt stirrup hilt with cut away corners, embossed foliate langets, panelled crossguard and knucklebow, pronounced forward sloping pommel and backstrap ornamented with stylized foliage, smooth facetted ivory grip, in its ornamental brass scabbard, pierced with sunburst circles and key pattern panels, backed with red leather, presentation inscription on locket. Good Condition the hilt retaining approximately 40% gilt,with traces to scabbard (hilt loose, blade some wear). Plate 66. Note: The presentation inscription reads “From Lieut Col Herford to Lieut William Bace of the 1 Batt 61 Foot. by gratitude for his Valour and Support in the Action at Toulouse, June 8th 1814”
