A 19th century French carved ivory and silver desk seal, maker A 19th century French carved ivory and silver desk seal, maker's mark poorly struck, 1838-1972 French boar's head poincon, the handles carved as a bouquet of flowers, the silver head chased with scrolls, flowers and foliage, the silver matrix vacant, 12cm (4 3/4in) long, in a fitted leather covered case from Rowlands & Frazer, 146 Regent St, W. Established in the first half of the 19th century by Christopher Rowlands and underwent various name changes over the years until 1860 the final name change being that to Rowlands & Frazer. It continued in business following the 1902 retirement of Arthur Rowlands. Thomas Frazer trading under the same name, until late 1905 or early 1906 when the business was finally closed.

A Georgian Officer's presentation sabre to the Ross-Shire Militia, 77cm sharply curved blade etched with the Royal Arms, stand of arms floral sprays, maker's panel for Thos Bates Warranted and a scrolling ribbon presentation inscription 'Presented by the permanent non-commissioned officers of the 1st. Regiment Ross-shire Militia to Captn Simon Simpson their Adjutant in testimony of the high sense they entertain of his conduct as an officer & gentleman towards them & the regiment in general', fine quality copper-gilt stirrup hilt, the pierced stirrup guard cast and chased with a lions mask and entwined serpents, shield shaped langets decorated with a mounted cavalryman, fine horses head pommel, the mane flowing down and forming the back strap, gadrooned ferrule, chequered ivory grip, discolouration to the blade. Captain and Adjutant Simon Simpson of the Ross-shire Militia not traced in the Militia Lists of the late 18th and early 19th century. There is, however, a Captain and Adjutant Simon Simpson listed as serving with Fraser's Regiment of Fencible Infantry from 29th November 1794 in the 1796 Militia List (Timpson in some lists) and in the 1810 and 1815 Army Lists on half-pay. Fraser's Fencibles were raised in 1794. The regiment saw active service in Ireland during the Rebellion of 1798, taking part in the battle of Castlebar, 27th August 1798, when a combined force of French Regulars and Irish Auxiliaries under the French General Joseph Amable Humbert defeated a combined force of Irish Militia and Scottish Fencibles.
