Hors contexte il est très difficile de déterminer à laquelle des deux catégories cet objet doit être rattaché.DAN MASKIvory CoastThe stand signed Kichizo Inagaki (1876-1951).Within the typological corpus of Dan masks, only two categories can present large circular openings at eye level. The first is that of the zakpei ge masks, responsible for ensuring the safety of villages by checking that domestic fires are out. The second, and apparently more common, is the gunye ge, or racing masks. During the races organised each week of the dry season in the northern savannah, a masked runner would chase an unmasked one. If he managed to catch him by the neck and back, he kept his mask. If not, the unmasked rider would put on his own mask and in turn chase another competitor. At the end of the season, the rider with the most victories was proclaimed champion. Out of context it is very difficult to determine to which of the two categories this object should be attached. MASQUE KPAN BAOULÉCôte-d'ivoireSocle signé Kichizo Inagaki (1876-1951). 30cm (11 13/16in) high. Cf: S.Vogel : « L'art baoulé du visible et de l'invisible » Adam Biro, 1997, pp.171-175.KPAN BAULE MASKIvory CoastBase signed Kichizo Inagaki (1876-1951)This type of Baule mask with a crested headdress seems to be characteristic of the two kpan masks that appear during the Goli dances, which can be performed both as a village celebration and at the funeral of an important person in the community. The two kpan would be the last of the four different pairs of masks to appear at the end of the day, with the man preceding the woman, and this moment would constitute the high point of the dances. Kpan masks are relatively rare in the corpus of Baule art, and out of context, there is nothing in the classic idealised treatment of Baule beauty to differentiate the male mask from the female. see S.Vogel, L'art baoulé du visible et de l'invisible, Adam Biro, 1997, pp.171-175.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

19th century table clock.Bronze, ebonised wood and porcelain dial.Measurements: 66 x 34 cm.Table clock made for the Turkish market, with ebonised wood structure, applied bronze decorations and porcelain dial, with Turkish numerals for hours and minutes in black and openwork hands. The design is historicist in style, inspired by pieces from the Baroque period, hence the combination of an architectural structure of mixtilinear forms and emphatic volumes with the application of bronze. Also typical of the decorative arts of the Baroque period was a taste for contrasting qualities, colours and textures, hence the use of contrasting materials such as ebony, bronze, tortoiseshell and ivory. The clock stands on a stepped base, supported on cut-out legs (the bronze front legs) and decorated with classical relief mouldings in bronze and, on the front, with a chiselled, openwork and cut-out plaque with a composition of sinuous stems, leaves and bunches of grapes. The body of the clock rises above this base, open at the bottom to form a curved-sided recess, flanked by openwork bronze plaques similar to the base. The dial is set in a frame formed by sunbursts, directly inspired by French models from the time of Louis XIV, the Sun King. On both sides of the case are vertical bodies that stand out in plan and are decorated with openwork plaques, mouldings with reliefs, pinjantes, classical vase-shaped finials and openwork side rosettes as handles, all in bronze with Baroque vegetal motifs. Finally, the piece is crowned by a cup-shaped body also decorated with bronze appliqués, which stand out against the black background of the ebonised wood, and culminates in a large classical vase with relief decorations.
Female figure with dog in the style of KARL HAGENAUER (1898-1956), 20th century.Patinated wood.Measurements: 42 x 34 x 12 cm.The modelling of this sculpture is essential and synthetic without leaving aside the naturalism, typically Art Deco. Thus, in general, the details are left to one side, the meticulous rendering of the real model, although the author, a follower of Karl Hagenauer's style, pays special attention to capturing the movement of the animal's anatomy. These characteristics ascribe the piece to Art Deco, an artistic style that emerged in 1920 and whose influence continued until the mid-20th century in some countries. It sought to renew all disciplines, championing the value of the technological progress of the time and the new sciences of the day. The son of the goldsmith Carl Hagenauer, Karl studied at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, where he was taught by Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad and imbued with the spirit of the Wiener Wekstätte. After obtaining his diploma in architecture, he did military service between 1917 and 1919, and on his return he began to work as an architect and in his father's studio. During these years he created numerous pieces in silver, brass, copper, enamel, ivory, stone and wood. In 1928, after his father's death, he took over the management of the workshop and was responsible for the expansion of the firm, extending production to cabinetmaking and opening shops in Vienna and Salzburg. Since then he has exhibited his best pieces both in Austria and abroad, was twice awarded the gold medal at the Milan Triennale and was made a member of the Austrian Werkbund and the Werkstätte. His works are now in collections all over the world, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the MoMA and the Jewish Museum in New York, the Casa Lis in Salamanca and many others.
