A POLYCHROME AND GILT-LACQUERED 'FOREIGNER' TABLE SCREEN, KANGXI PERIODChina, second half of 17th to early 18th century. Finely painted to one side with a red-haired Dutchman standing on the grassy ground and wearing a characteristic buttoned robe tied at the waist, a boy attendant standing behind him and holding a long blood-stained sword, two lanterns hanging above them. The other side with a gnarled branch with flowers, leafy vines and a butterfly. The frame decorated in gilt lacquer with lotus scrolls and other floral and geometric designs against a black ground.Provenance: Estate of Sear Hang Hwie Pao (1937-2009). Old illegible collector's label attached to frame. Pao was one of Canada's leading dealers of Chinese porcelain and works of art. His antique store, Pao & Moltke Ltd., owned together with his wife Mrs. von Moltke, who descended from a German and Danish noble family, was a fixture in Toronto's trendy Yorkville area from the 1980s to early 2000s.Condition: Old wear, natural age cracks, minor losses and touchups to the frame but not the screen itself. Overall superb condition for a lacquer table screen from the second half of the 17th century.Weight: 352.7 gDimensions: Size 24.5 x 19.3 x 11.4 cmThere was a fascination with all things European at the Qing court during the 17th and 18th centuries. This 'occidentalism' may be directly compared with the fascination of 'chinoiserie' that was sweeping Europe at approximately the same time. This interest in foreigners, their clothes, customs, and belongings is reflected in works of art of the period (see Auction result comparison). Scrolls depicting tribute bearers from foreign lands were commissioned by the court, on which male and female figures from various countries were shown in their different costumes. Reflecting the imperial view of China as at the center of all nations, the scrolls also reveal a certain curiosity about those outside the Middle Kingdom. On one such handscroll in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, many of the figures are described as being from the West and the attributes of each couple are discussed in both Chinese and Manchu (see Splendors of a Flourishing Age, Macau, 1999, no. 42).Interestingly, however, the present figure is devoid of the typical caricatural elements, such as an overtly large nose and eyes or a grotesque expression. Moreover, he is depicted with long earlobes, which are normally seen on Buddhist figures, but were also regarded as lucky in China. The long sleeves and boy attendant are also typical elements of Chinese art that usually did not appear in depictions of foreigners. This suggests a certain respect for the depicted foreigner that went beyond curiosity or fascination. Perhaps he is a Dutch missionary, as indicated by his curly red hair and buttoned robe. One such Dutch missionary was George Candidius (1597-1647), the first missionary to be stationed on the island of Taiwan, who stayed there from 1627 to 1637.Auction result comparison: Compare a famille rose spirit barrel depicting a Dutch drunkard, wearing a similar buttoned jacket, dated to the Qianlong period, at Bonhams London in Fine Chinese Art on 12 May 2016, lot 299, sold for GBP 25,000, and an ivory figure of a kneeling Dutch foreigner, with a similar hairstyle, at Bonhams London in Fine Chinese Art on 16 May 2013, lot 366, sold for GBP 31,250.

Dish; Gujarat, India, 16th century.Mother-of-pearl and bronze.Measurements: 3 x 23 cm.Dish made of mother-of-pearl with bronze finials that can be seen in the lower part of the piece. From the trade routes of the Indies they arrived in Europe, with this one having the peculiarity of being made entirely of mother-of-pearl, as the majority of examples come from China and are made of porcelain. In India, this type of mother-of-pearl work was traditionally associated with rituals, being especially used for holy water.Through the trade routes that linked Europe, America and the Indies, various oriental products, most of which were considered luxury items, reached the Iberian Peninsula. Royal families, nobility and people of high social standing all desired exotic objects for their collections, and ivory carvings were among the most prized, both for the value and exoticism of the material itself and for the quality of the workmanship. These carvings also had a dual function. Firstly, they were precious and decorative objects, but they also had a didactic and evangelistic purpose, as carvings were made with Christian themes and iconography, using decorative motifs, elements and techniques typical of the Far East. Generally speaking, the missionaries commissioned local artists to make them, showing them European models to imitate. These types of pieces, intended for Portuguese clients, were made especially in Goa (India).

An important 18th century Lombardy ebony banded walnut and ivory inlaid twin pedestal desk, the top and sides inlaid with a scenes from Homer’s Iliad, after original drawings by John Flaxman RA (1755-1826), within moulded shaped ebony cartouches, fitted with three frieze drawers over hinged cupboards, inlaid with allegories representing Hope and Faith, on later castors.UK APHA Registration of an ivory item Submission reference: D99UXPKP W.118cm D.61cm H.82.4cm LOT ESSAY BY DR. ARABELLA CIFANIThe scene is taken from a drawing that the English sculptor and draftsman, John Flaxman(1755–1826), made to illustrate the passages of Homer's Iliad, a commission proposed to him in 1791 by Georgiana Hare-Naylor while he was living in Rome. Here is represented a rare episode, with Polydamas, a character from Greek mythology soothsayer, adviser and valiant warrior, friend and lieutenant of Hector, who fought in the Trojan War and who, in the twelfth book of the Iliad, advises Hector not to cross a dangerous moat that was part of the defence at the Achaean port and also advises Hector not to continue the siege. Hector will not listen to him and will face death at the hands of Achilles (Homer Iliad 12.60).‘’Then verily Polydamus drew nigh to Hector, and spake, saying: “Hector, and ye other leaders of the Trojans and allies, it is but folly that we seek to drive across the trench our swift horses; hard in sooth is it to cross, for sharp stakes are set in it, and close anigh them is the wall of the Achaeans.’’ Homer - Iliad 12.60John Flaxman, sculptor and draftsman, a leading proponent of English neoclassicism, created 34 drawings for Homer's Iliad in Rome in 1793, which were engraved on copper for the first time in Rome by Tommaso Piroli in 1793 ("L'Iliade et the Odyssée d'Homère gravéepar Thomas Piroli d'après les desseins composés par John Flaxman. 94 gravures ", Francesco Romero publisher, Rome, 1793). The meeting Flaxman and Piroli was a happy union, sealed by a public success that also provoked real acts of editorial piracy. "The reprints followed one another in various original editions or copies of the branches in different European cities, attesting to the vast success achieved from Flaxman's inventions masterfully translated and propagated with the burin of Piroli. Two years later, the plates for "The Iliad" were republished in London. In 1805, publishers Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme printed new editions of both series, including eleven extra illustrations commissioned from Flaxman (five for "The Iliad" and six for "The Odyssey").The style of the ivory inlay perfectly reflects the spirit of Flaxman's engraving, the figures in fact retain their taste for graffiti, which was an absolute novelty at the time. Flaxman avoided the background landscape, setting and detail, focusing on figures rendered with pure outlines. It has long been known that Flaxman drew on and synthesized a wide variety of visual sources in the development of his outline illustrations, combining classical figuration from "Etruscan" reliefs, sculptures, engravings and vases with forms derived from medieval and early Renaissance sources, life studies and observational sketches of daily Italian scenes and characters. Flaxman's style of illustration has been discussed and celebrated by a multitude of critics across Europe and has had a demonstrable influence on artists such as Ingres, Goya and Blake. The cabinet is also enriched with other ivory inlays, representing divinities and allegories, including the allegory of Hope and Faith.GORRINGE’S are grateful to Dr. Cifani, for her identification of John Flaxman’s designs, used in the ivory inlays on this desk.Overall a little evenly faded to a light walnut tone with old dents, small losses and splits throughout commensurate with age, ivory inlay looks to be mostly complete but some small losses notably to the right side of the top, the doors to the drawers are fitted with English locks but no escutcheons suggesting the later addition of the veneers, cupboard doors have Italian locks but no key, lower front right corner is broken with the foot now come loose, minor dents and scuffing elsewhere around the base.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place.
