Harold Knight RA, ROI, RP, RWA (1874-1961) - Head of a Girl (Lily Poyser), in profile to left, charcoal, E.S.K. blindstamp, 34 x 23.5cm, on the reverse part of a charcoal drawing by the same hand of a statue in a niche [see lot 1134], unframed Provenance: Frederick Riley (1867-1915) an art teacher, by whom acquired from the artist when a student at Nottingham School of Art, 1888-1895; thence by descent to the present vendor. As a young artist in his 20's, Harold Knight was both a spirited and sensitive draughtsman. This precocious talent, utterly devoid of sentimentality was noticed by many of his contemporaries. Laura Knight in her autobiography (The Magic of a Line, 1965) was to recall a remark of Philip Connard RA, one of the South Kensington examiners, about the tedious task of wading through student work sent from the provinces, quoting his fellows' saying "Never mind - just wait until the work from Nottingham". In 1895 Harold Knight declined the offer of a full time teaching post at Nottingham School of Art. Having obtained a British Institute Travelling Scholarship he left for Paris to study under Jean Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant at the Academie Julien To be included in the catalogue raisonne currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight's great nephew R John Croft FCA (who's assistance is gratefully acknowledged in the cataloguing of this lot) Several faint horizontal lines beneath the subjects ear are impressions of creases and stands slightly proud, as distinct from scratches.
Harold Knight RA, ROI, RP, RWA (1874-1961) - Life Model Nottingham School of Art, charcoal, 52 x 37cm, laid down on the original mount with rectangular purple ink stamp inscribed Student's surname - Knight and Age 21, Registration No 3597, Subject No 8c2, unframed Provenance: Frederick Riley (1867-1915) an art teacher, by whom acquired from the artist when a student at Nottingham School of Art, 1888-1895; thence by descent to the present vendor This highly accomplished life study by Harold Knight is almost certainly of the half blind Jack Price, or Mark Wharley, both of whom were hired by the Nottingham School of Art as models for its Life Class. At this period only male students could attend the School's Life Class. His fellow student Laura Knight recalled (Oil Paint and Grease Paint, 1936) "If the men worked from the living figure I had to go in to the Antique Room; the hatred of those plaster figures stays with me today - I never got any benefit out of their study..." After she left the School, Laura Knight employed Jack Price as a model. He was the first naked figure she drew. In lieu of a fee, she gave him some of her studies to sell (The Magic of a Line, 1965) Since Harold Knight was born on the 27th November 1874, the present drawing, which gives his age as 21 means the South Kensington Exhibition must have been sometime from 25th November to 31st December 1895 To be included in the catalogue raisonne currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight's great nephew R John Croft FCA (who's assistance is gratefully acknowledged in the cataloguing of this lot) Good condition
Harold Knight RA, ROI, RP, RWA (1874-1961) - Head of a Girl (Lily Poyser), charcoal, E.S.K. blindstamp, 32.5 x 29.5cm, on the reverse a charcoal drawing by the same hand of the lower part of a statue [see lot 1132], unframed Provenance: Frederick Riley (1867-1915) an art teacher, by whom acquired from the artist when a student at Nottingham School of Art, 1888-1895; thence by descent to the present vendor To be included in the catalogue raisonne currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight's great nephew R John Croft FCA (who's assistance is gratefully acknowledged in the cataloguing of this lot) Good condition
Harold Knight RA, ROI, RP, RWA (1874-1961) - Study of an Unknown Boy, head and shoulders, charcoal, 43 x 29.5cm, unframed Provenance: Frederick Riley (1867-1915) an art teacher, by whom acquired from the artist when he was a student at Nottingham School of Art, 1888-1895; thence by descent to the present vendor This meticulous and empathetic portrait of an unknown boy is reminiscent of the contemporary artist-photographers of the Linked Ring of the 1890's. The angle of the head and expression, suggestive of pity, or pathos, so ably rendered in the present example was attempted by many other British artists of the period, notably Walter Langley RI and other early members of the Newlyn School. To be included in the catalogue raisonne currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight's great nephew R John Croft FCA (who's assistance is gratefully acknowledged in the cataloguing of this lot) Good condition
Harold Knight RA, ROI, RP, RWA (1874-1961) - Head of a Girl (Lily Poyser), oil on canvas laid on board, E.S.K. blindstamp, 38.5 x 28cm, on the reverse a later framer's label of F W Charman and Sons Art Dealers, Frame Makers, etc 75 Wey Hill Haslemere and in their mid 20th century wood frame Provenance: Frederick Riley (1867-1915) an art teacher, by whom acquired from the artist when a student at Nottingham School of Art, 1888-1895; thence by descent to the present vendor Lily Poyser (also the subject of lot 1132 and 1134) was the model for Laura Knight's The Yellow Lady, 1891, later exhibited at the Royal Academy Retrospective Exhibition of Paintings and Drawings by Dame Laura Knight 1965, Catalogue No 9. In her autobiography (Magic of a Line, 1965) Laura Knight recounted an incident at Nottingham School of Art when "A sensation came about one life class later on: This happened when Wilson Foster [Life Class master] having reached Harold's profile drawing of a lovely young girl - Lily Poyser - stayed there for a long time without saying a word, eventually to tell that Harold's study was beyond criticism". Lily Poyser's three sisters also posed for both Harold and Laura Knight receiving wages of a halfpenny (article in Nottingham Evening Post, February 25 1997) To be included in the catalogue raisonne currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight's great nephew R John Croft FCA (who's assistance is gratefully acknowledged in the cataloguing of this lot) Minor scratches and marks, dirty, entirely original condition and unrestored, presumably placed in to the modern frame by Charman & Sons in the mid 20th c
Harold Knight RA, ROI, RP, RWA (1874-1961) - Portrait of a Woman, seated half length in a green dress, signed (or inscribed) on the stretcher 'Harold Knight Painting' and verso with the artist's address 34 Elm Avenue, rectangular ink stamp inscribed Student's surname - Knight and Age - 21 / 3597, Subject No - 17G (?), paper label No 879, stencilled E.S.K., oil on canvas, 74.5 x 53cm Provenance: Frederick Riley (1867-1915) an art teacher, by whom acquired from the artist when a student at Nottingham School of Art, 1888-1895; thence by descent to the present vendor The model for this early, fully achieved portrait by Harold Knight, bears a striking resemblance to Kate Johnson, a fellow student of Harold and Laura Knight at Nottingham School of Art. Kate Johnson was one of a small group photographed at the School c1893. She was unrelated to Laura Knight, nee Johnson. To be included in the catalogue raisonne currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight's great nephew R John Croft FCA (who's assistance is gratefully acknowledged in the cataloguing of this lot) One or two minor scratches, varnish dirty, unlined, not holed or torn, in entirely original unrestored condition in narrow flat oak frame with traces of gilding. Note: extreme lower centre remains of a now browned and friable pasted label resembling a stamped edging, which, if inscribed, is no longer legible
