Lot 141

A rare J F Christy (Stangate Glass Works, Lambeth) enamelled 'Well Spring' water carafe and tumbler, circa 1847-50Designed by Richard Redgrave for 'Summerly's Art Manufactures', of shouldered ovoid bottle form with a gilt rim, finely decorated with a band of reeds issuing from the base, a flowerhead border around the shoulder, the matching tumbler of bell shape with an everted rim, carafe 15.9cm high, the carafe marked 'FS' above 'R REDGRAVE A R A' in black above the monogram 'CLS' in black and red (2)Footnotes:It is very rare to find a 'Well Spring' carafe and tumbler surviving together such as this. A 'caraffe and glass' were advertised by Henry Cole's 'Summerly's Art Manufactures', founded in 1847, in December that year for 17/6d. Cole, using the alias Felix Summerly, commissioned different artists including Richard Redgrave RA to design a range of everyday objects which were intended to be affordable. Redgrave's notion was that an object's ornamentation should suggest its function, so the choice of reed decoration would have been particularly appropriate for a water carafe. When full, the grasses would appear to be emerging from a spring. An identical carafe is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no.C.165-1992) and another is in the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (inv. no.2017.118), neither of which have beakers. Very little is known about John Fell Christy's glassworks in Lambeth, but he specialised in painted decoration in the style of Richardson's of Stourbridge. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 16

An important and early sealed wine bottle, dated 1683Of 'Onion' form in pale green glass, the large shouldered body with tapering sides, a prominent string rim trailed around the short stubby neck, applied on the shoulder with a large moulded circular seal inscribed 'R How/ at/ Chedworth/ 1683' with a deep 'kick-up' base, 15cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceSotheby's, 4 December 1978, lot 1David Burton CollectionLiteratureDavid Burton, Antique Sealed Bottles (2015), pp.501-2This significant bottle is the earliest dated bottle of 'Onion' form with this style of short stubby neck. Whist sealed bottle with earlier dates exist, these are of transitional 'Shaft and Globe/Onion' form and not true 'Onion' bottles, making this one of the most important dated sealed wine bottles recorded. Chedworth is a village in Gloucestershire just north of Cirencester. The seal can be attributed to Sir Richard Grobham Howe, 3rd Baronet (circa 1651-1730, an MP for Wilshire who died without issue). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 20

A rare sealed armorial wine bottle, circa 1710-15Of 'Onion' form in olive-green glass, the large bulbous body with a short tapering neck trailed with a string rim, applied to the side with a circular seal moulded with the arms of Incledon, a chevron engrailed between three tuns, surmounted by the initials 'R I', with a shallow basal 'kick-up', 15.6cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceRobert Incledon and thence by descent through the Chichester familyChichester Collection, Sotheby's, 11 November 1996David Burton CollectionLiteratureDavid Burton, Antique Sealed Bottles (2015), p.1423The arms on this bottle are those of the Incledon family of Buckland, near Braunton in Devon. The initials relate to Robert Incledon (1675-1758), who built Pilton House in Barnstaple in 1746. The family had a particularly strong connection with the Chichester family of Hall, near Barnstaple, with Robert's eldest brother Lewis marrying Susannah Chichester in 1714. Indeed, this bottle formed part of the Chichester collection when sold by Sotheby's at Hall in 1996. This is the only recorded bottle with a seal bearing these arms. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 252

A Battersea enamel box, circa 1751-53Of rectangular form with gilt metal mounts, the hinged cover printed in brown on the exterior with 'Paris presenting an apple to Hibernia', the interior with a portrait of Maria Gunning, the base with a lion and cherubs, panels of children representing the arts to the sides, engraved by Ravenet, 6.7cm wideFootnotes:ProvenanceWith Simon Spero, June 1981E and J Handley Collection, illustrated 18th Century English Transfer-Printed Porcelain and Enamels (1991), p.260Simon Spero exhibition, 2000, no.44Bunny and Paul Davies CollectionThe scene on the exterior of the cover is a reference to the famous Irish beauty, Maria Gunning, who arrived in England with her younger sister in 1750. Her portrait on the interior shows her fashionably dressed in Turkish style taken from a mezzotint by R Houston after Liotard. See Egan Mew, Battersea Enamels (1926), fig.12. She later became Countess of Coventry and her sister Duchess of Hamilton. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 276

A Lund's Bristol or early Worcester high-footed sauceboat, circa 1751-52Of generous size with a pronounced lip and undulating rim, the handle with a leaf-moulded thumbrest picked out in green, the body embossed with cornucopias of flowers and fruit forming festoons hung from ribbon bows, a shell motif and a curious fish, the relief moulding picked out in enamel colours, further drapery festoons embossed and painted around the pedestal foot, the interior painted with flowering plants around the border and within the base, the rim edged with a brown line, 22cm longFootnotes:Much has been written about an important group of sauceboats made both in Bristol and in Worcester during the first year or two of the factory's production. Some examples are marked 'Bristol' in relief and these correspond to the items described by Dr Pococke when he visited Lund's Bristol factory and noted 'beautiful white sauceboats adorned with reliefs of festoons' selling for 16 shillings a pair. Sauceboats moulded with bows and floral garlands occur with two very different handle forms. A few have remained 'in the white', although most have the moulded decoration picked out in enamel colours. It is difficult to determine where the enamelling was carried out. Some are believed to have been manufactured at Bristol with the enamelling added slightly later, perhaps at Worcester or in London. Others may have been made and decorated at Worcester using moulds brought up the River Severn from Bristol. Most recently Ray Jones has attempted a classification of different Lund's Bristol and early Worcester sauceboat types in his book, The Origins of Worcester Porcelain (2018), pp.376-8. He observes that none of the festooned boats with the present handle form are known with an embossed Bristol mark. An example very similar to the present lot was in the R David Butti Collection, sold by Bonhams on 10 May 2006, lot 1. This is illustrated by Nicholas Panes, British Porcelain Sauceboats (2009), fig.174 where the author suggests this is London decoration on Lund's Bristol porcelain. Another on loan to Bristol Museum and Art Gallery is illustrated by Simon Spero, The A J Smith Collection (2006), fig.44 with an attribution to very early Worcester. Other similar sauceboats are in the Klepser Collection, the H Rissik Marshall Collection and in the Museum of Royal Worcester. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 28

A rare and impressive sealed jeroboam wine bottle, dated 1803Of 'Squat Cylinder' form in dark olive-green glass, the wide body with a long tapering neck trailed with a prominent string rim, applied to the front with a circular seal inscribed 'R. Crig/ Merriott/ 1803.', with a flat 'kick-up' base, 37.4cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceDavid Burton CollectionLiteratureRoger Dumbrell, Understanding Antique Wine Bottles (1983), p.248David Burton, Antique Sealed Bottles (2015), p.826This is the second largest sealed bottle recorded, beaten only by another dated jeroboam Cylinder bottle with a seal inscribed 'F/ Arthur/ 1794'. Very few bottles of this impressive size would have been blown at this date, and it is likely to have been made to commemorate an important event. Merriott is a small village in Somerset between Ilminster and Yeovil and the name on this huge bottle relates to the Cridge family. A Richard Cridge married Mary Shulter on 15 February 1803 and it seems plausible that this bottle was commissioned to celebrate the event. One other jeroboam Cylinder bottle bearing the same seal is recorded, formerly in the David Westcott Collection. A glass matching the size of the bottle bearing a seal with the same name but dated 1808 is recorded by Dumbrell (1983).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A Worcester teapot and cover, circa 1754-56Of globular form with fine strap-fluting and embossed rococo cartouche panels, painted in blue with the 'Indian Fisherman' pattern, the front with a Chinese angler beneath a willow tree, the reverse with a figure in a sampan, flower spays around the border, 13.8cm high, workman's mark of a tiny cross (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceRonald McKnight Melvin CollectionBeechwood Collection, Simon Spero exhibition, 2016, no.44Robyn Robb CollectionThis is a fine example of a 'panelled' teapot, as listed in Worcester's London Showroom price list circa 1755. The detailed moulding is exceptional and clearly Worcester's decorators appreciated this, for by leaving the moulding in the white without any blue outlines they created a most attractive and light composition. A similar teapot was in the R David Butti Collection sold by Bonhams on 10 May 2006, lot 101.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 564

An important Coalport dessert plate from the Nicholas I Service, circa 1845Painted to the centre with the badge of the Order of St. Andrew, a raised gold lobed band around the cavetto, the border with six further badges for the Orders of St. George, St. Alexander Nevsky, St. Vladimir, the White Eagle, St. Stanislaus and St. Anne, all within elaborate shaped gilt cartouches, reserved on a deep blue ground, with a gadrooned rim, 25.4cm diam, retailer's mark for A B and R P Daniell, 129 New Bond Street and 18 Wigmore Street, LondonFootnotes:ProvenanceProperty from an International Private CollectionThis plate is from a dessert service commissioned by Queen Victoria for Tsar Nicholas I on the occasion of his state visit to England in 1844, known in Russia as the 'Coalport Service'. The original service comprised 62 plates and was delivered to St. Petersburg in 1845. The design copies the William IV service by Flight, Barr and Barr which was made to celebrate the Coronation of King William IV in 1831, but the English insignia were replaced with Russian Orders. The Emperor was so impressed with the service that he ordered a further 124 plates to match from the Imperial Porcelain Factory so that it could be used at state banquets. A matching dinner service was later ordered from Coalport in 1849. A specimen dessert plate for the service, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no.3386-1901), was produced for the Great Exhibition in 1851 where it was greatly admired. In 1934 several plates from the original service were sold by the Narkomat for Foreign Trade, but many of the surviving pieces are in the State Hermitage Museum. See Michael Messenger, Coalport 1795-1926 (1995), p.27 and pp.219-22. A fine builder's R.N.L.I presentation scale model of the Hydraulic Steam Lifeboat 'City of Glasgow , 1894': gilt brass funnel, capstan, anchor, binnacle and fittings with side grab ropes, the hull painted in RNLI blue red and coral pink, polished brass rudder, raised on turned brass support within an ebonised glazed case, presentation plaque inscribed 'Hydraulic Steam Lifeboat City of Glasgow' Built For The Royal National Lifeboat Institution, by R & H Green, Blackwall Yard, London , 1894', model length 100 cm , the case 40 x 124 x 47.5, raised on a turned leg presentation table, 131cm overall height. Together with a facsimile blue print 'Proposed Hydraulic Life-boat for the service of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution' , 61 x 104cm, two copies of 'The Life-Boat and its Work' by Sir John Cameron Lamb, one with personalised dedication to Sir Fitzroy Clayton, four black and white photographs of the Filey pulling lifeboat 'Hollon The Third' (in use 1907-1937) being hauled ashore and related ephemera.*Notes- At the end of the 19th century the RNLI began considering the use of stem powered lifeboats due to the number of times that the pulling of sailing boats towed to rescue was undertaken by steam powered tugs. In June 1888 a design by R & H Green of Blackwall, London was selected and the first hydraulic steam lifeboat 'Duke of Northumberland' was ordered and completed in 1889. During summer trials in 1890 the Duke of Northumberland impressed the Harwich committee and in 1894 the RNLI's second steam lifeboat 'City of Glasgow' arrived at Harwich on the 7th November, 1894. Funded through the Glasgow Lifeboat Saturday Fund and designed by RNLI architect George Lennox Watson, she was built by R& H Green at a cost of £2,639 10s 0d. The City of Glasgow was beset by many problems during her service when in March 1895 on returning to the station her condenser tubes started leaking. Later on in the same year alterations were needed to improve her trim and whilst returning from service in October the exhaust pipe cracked and needed repairs. In 1897 the port inlet joint started leaking so much that she needed to be returned London for repairs. On the journey the problem became such an issue that she needed to be grounded on a mudbank near Sherness and subsequently towed to R&H Green's yard. Despite her issues, 'City Of Glasgow' undertook a number of services during the period 1894 to 1897 and after repairs 1898 to 1901, rescuing thirty -two lives. Technical issues were to lead to her replacement in 1901 when she was withdrawn from service and eventually sold for £100. The facsimile blue print is signed and dated 'HDC 27.6.88' indicating that Harold Clayton had put forward his own design to the RNLI for the proposed steam lifeboat.*Provenance- Clayton family descent* A similar model can be seen in the Science Museum (Object number 1912-130) which has a white painted hull below the water line rather than the coral pink of the model here.

The following three lots relate to the WWI German U-boat fleet surrender at Harwich, November 1918 to April 1919. A lacquered brass and bakelite handled magnifying glass inscribed 'UB 25. Surrendered at Harwich 2nd December 1918': also numbered '483' to bezel, 29cm long.* Notes- After the signing of the Armistice at the end of WWI, the German fleet began to cross the Channel and surrender. As the only natural deep water harbour between the Thames and the Humber, Harwich was chosen for the surrendering fleet of over 150 U-Boats and other vessels to be secured. Rear Admiral R Tyrwhitt ruled that there should be 'no communication whatsoever' with the German sailors who were transferred straight onto transport ships and returned home leaving the vessels in what became known as 'U Boat valley' *Notes UB 25 was launched on the 22nd November 1915 and commissioned on the 11th December 1915 under the command of Hans Nieland. She was broken up in Canning Town in 1922
