The Drunken Silenus, circa 1595-1602, 17th century pen and brown ink over a counter-proof printed in pale red, on heavy laid paper, after the engraving by Annibale Carracci of his own design for the Tazza Farnese, the engraved silver dish made for Cardinal Odoardo Farnese, light additions in pencil suggesting some vine leaves as a covering for the genitals of the main serving satyr, inscribed in pencil to verso at head R. 1796, in an early hand (probably 18th or early 19th century), framed and glazed, with section of white card to verso to which is attached an old Sotheby's catalogue entry '154. Italian School, 17th Century. The Drunken Silenus, pen & ink, over red contre-épreuve', above which is attached another printed note 'Bought at Sotheby's date 20.7.67 lot no. 154'Qty: (1)NOTESSee Bohlin Prints and Related Drawings by the Carracci Family (1979) 19. Carracci's original design for the standing dish, engraved on a silver plaque, is now in the Museo Nazionale, Naples, and was used for taking prints. A Late George IV/Victorian solid satin birch circular centre library table, the top with moulded edge above four scrolling outswept supports, on castors, the underside of the top and one leg stamped 'VR, O, COBURG COTTAGE, MARCH, 1873', 72cm high, the top 132cm diameter Provenance; Christie's London, lot 189, June 15, 2000. The stamp relates to The Royal Estate of Osborne, in East Cowes, Isle of Wight. Coburg Cottage was built by H. R. H. Prince Albert for Queen Victoria as a birthday present in 1852. Christie's footnote detailed the history that this table was "almost certainly supplied to King George IV, and by descent to George VI, by whom given to the vendor's father, a landscape gardener at Royal Lodge Windsor, to replace furniture lost when his house was destroyed by bombing in 1940".Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Ltd, with a brass plaque engraved for presentation to Earl Roberts on his 80th birthday, 1912 Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, VC, KG, KP, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCIE, KStJ, VD, PC, FRSGS (1832-1914) was a Victorian era general who became one of the most successful British military commanders of his time. Born in India to an Anglo-Irish family, Roberts joined the East India Company Army and served as a young officer in the Indian Rebellion during which he won a Victoria Cross for gallantry. He was then transferred to the British Army and fought in the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War, in which his exploits earned him widespread fame. Roberts would go on to serve as the Commander-in-Chief, India before leading British Forces to success in the Second Boer War. A late 19th century French ormolu figural "chariot" mantel clock after the model by Frédéric-Eugène Piat, the eight-day countwheel bell striking movement stamped indistinctly *R *501, with slender white enamel Roman numeral chapter ring forming the rim of a six-spoke chariot wheel of the case "Chérubins assis dans un char tiré par un tigre", modelled as a Bacchic scene with seated satyr in leopard drawn chariot, attended by three putti, over a naturalistic scroll cast base signed "E Piat", the whole resting on conforming scroll mounted ebonised base, the case with Arrow foundry mark to underside of satyr's foot and stamped indistinctly also to interior of rear case door, 60cms high, 78.5cms wide. Frédéric-Eugène Piat (1827-1903) was artistic director of the Maison Marchand producing designs primarily in bronze for clocks, fireplace furniture, sculpture and fountains. Perhaps his most famous creation- in association with Maison Millet Paris- was the "Grande Horloge"- a monumental clock in ormolu, bronze and Carrara marble standing 270cms high. The Saint-Loup museum of fine arts in Troyes, Champagne-Ardenne, holds the largest collection of his artwork and designs. Condition Report: Movement is compete and in working order although a precautionary service/clean is advised. The chapter ring has probably become detached and has been re-attached using superglue with some adhesive fingerprints being left on the the enamel surface otherwise ring appears undamaged. The hands are probably replacements. The case is in fine condition with minimal wear/discolouration.Clock is complete with a pendulum and winding key.Condition Report Disclaimer
