+The following 15 lots of stained glass windows were discovered beneath leaves and tarpaulins during the clearance of a house and grounds in Cheltenham last year. They have probably lain there for the best part of 50 years. It is understood the windows were salvaged from churches in the South Wales district shortly after the end of WWII - many buildings in that area were damaged by enemy action. The collection is offered for sale without reserve. The glass has been cleaned and each panel secured within temporary timber frames, which allows handling and transportation.Three 19th century or earlier lancet shaped stained glass windows, each panel 160 x 52cm approx, bearing royal ancorials of different periods, each supported by beasts with further quarries, monogrammed E and R set below crowns, a further such panels 58 x 52cm approx is included in this lot (4)
A walnut pedestal desk, by Edward Barnsley (1900-1987), 1937, for Captain J R Abbey (1894-1969), the red leather top over three frieze drawers and two cupboards with fielded panels,140cm wide71cm deep81cm highJ R Abbey fought in the First and Second World Wars. He later became manager of Kemp Town Brewery and saw the merger with Charringtons in 1954. He was a bibliophile and had complete collections from the Kelmscott, Ashendene and Gwasg Gregynog presses.

A letter from Queen Charlotte addressed to close friend Lady Courtown, signed Windsor, 19 June 1788, the contents of the letter concern the King and Queen's upcoming visit to Cheltenham wherein she asks that the three pews are hired at the local church in order for the royal party to 'appear like Christians and make a good impression upon those who are there', the subsequent visit of Queen Charlotte and King George III took place on 12th July 1788, despite Cheltenham being established as a spa in the 1720's it is this royal visit that is often attributed to its success as a major spa town/Provenance: Sotheby's R E D Rawlins Collection Sale, 2nd-4th June 1980, Lot 116/see illustration
A 1st Lancashire Engineer Volunteers officers home service helmet, blue cloth covered cork with white metal armorial helmet plate, velvet backed linked chin scales, rosette side bosses, cross base with rosette mounts and spike fitting, quilted padded lining to interior, complete with storage tin named 'R E Pain' and a small white metal plaque inscribed 'Presented to Captain R E Pain on his retirement from the Command of the Rossall School Engineer Cadet Corps, Dec 1901' and a top hat in leather case/Note: Rossall School was the first school in the UK to found a Combined Cadet Force, from 1890 to 1908 the CCF was affiliated to the 1st Lancashire Engineer Volunteers/see illustration Condition Report: 545:Box corroded to exterior and dented, bears label R E Pain. There is a metal label with the lot, pictured. The felt is generally ok but two small holes, perhaps moth, to headband. Interior initialled. Spike unscrews.

A scarce framed and glazed vintage sepia b/w photograph of the R. M. S. Oronsay (the ship that carried the team to England for The Ashes) that has been signed by 16 members of the 1930 Australian cricket team including Bill Woodfull, Vic Richardson, Percy Hornibrook, Alan Kippax etc. Signed with bold fountain pens the signatures are clear and condition is generally very good with only one heavy corner crease, some light staining and a couple of minor pin holes.
