Very fine, toned £400-£500 --- Provenance: Bt Seaby June 1975 The first numismatic indication of an Edinburgh mint situated other than in Edinburgh Castle comes with the name Abbey Crowns - referring to the gold coinage of James V introduced in 1526. Their legends also refer to the Holy Cross (Rood). Holyrood Palace, as begun by James IV, was completed in 1505, though much extended during his son’s reign. The mint, apparently situated in the outer court of the palace on the south side of the Canongate, may have been established at this time. The abbey is mentioned in connection with coin dies as early as 1502 and Matthew Auchinleck, a moneyer up until 1507, was a Burgess of Canongate. [Abridged from Lord Stewartby’s article ‘Scottish Mints’ (Mint Dies and Currency pp.244-5)]
Alexander III (1249-1286), Second coinage, Sterling, class Ma/B mule, mm. cross pattée, bust left, rev. long cross, four mullets of six points in angles, distinctive looped r in rex and scotorvm, 1.36g/2h (SCBI 35, –; B xx, fig. 158; S 5053/5052). Alexander III (1249-1286), First coinage, Sterling, type IIIc, Berwick, Robert, roe t · o nb er · , plain sceptre handle, ‘scissors’ x, 1.38g/10h (cf. SCBI 35, 105-6; cf. B 19b, fig. 114B; S 5043). Small striking split, about very fine £300-£400 --- Provenance: DNW Auction 158, 24 April 2019, lot 643 According to Stephenson’s die study, this coin was struck from the final die in type III.
David II (1329-1371), First coinage, Second issue, Sterling, mm. cross pattée, bust left with sceptre, smaller lettering, six pellets after david, cross after dei, pellet between g and r of gracia, no sceptre-handle, rev. rex sco tto rvm, long cross, four mullets of six points in angles, smaller lettering, 1.04g/5h (Savage 13/ag; Burns Bust 5/Dakers Reverse 3; SCBI 35, –; B 15, fig. 239, same obv. die; S 5088). Some surface marks, nearly very fine, rare £100-£120 --- Provenance: Bt eBay February 2005 The practice of using different, and sometimes odd, stops on each obverse die was continued through much of the middle portion of the issue. This die is probably one of the most unusual.
David II (1329-1371), Third coinage, Groat, class 2a, Edinburgh, mm. cross pattée, ‘Robert II’ head, tressure of six arcs, trefoils in spandrels, star on sceptre-handle, double crosslet stops, nothing after scotorvm, no line below bust, cross over crescent contraction mark after dns, plain a both sides, 3.69g/5h (cf. SCBI 35, 422-3 and B 41, fig. 302; S 5125). Two small edge chips, otherwise good very fine, toned, the variety rare £240-£300 --- Provenance: R. Macpherson Collection, DNW Auction 83, 30 September 2009, lot 4003 [from Spink January 1981] No line below the bust is a consistent feature of the later part of the Light coinage but, despite that, this coin belongs earlier in the series as shown by the letter punches.
James V (1513-1542), Second coinage, Groat, Holyrood Abbey mint, type IIIb (iii), bust right with mantle and corded chain, single-arched crown, nine jewels to band, strawberry-leaf decorations, small trefoil on inner circle beneath first o of scotorv, rev. shield with rounded base, cross-ends E, no contraction after r of edinbvrgi, trefoil stops both sides, 2.69g/12h (cf. SCBI 35, 935-6; SCBI 58, 77ff; SCBI 71, 375 and B 15, fig. 717, same dies; S 5378). Light diagonal scratch on obverse, about very fine and toned £300-£400 --- Provenance: Bt L. Bennett May 2007 The vendor has records of this obverse coupled with six reverse dies.
David II (1329-1371), Second coinage, Class C, Groat, class C2, Edinburgh, mm. cross pattée, third intermediate bust, tressure of six arcs, nothing in spandrels, double crosslet stops, including after cotorvm, small d under v of vill, plain a both sides, 4.13g/9h (cf. SCBI 35, 386; B 27, fig. 289, same dies; S 5099). Slightly irregular flan, a few light surface scratches, otherwise about very fine and toned £240-£300 --- Provenance: R. Macpherson Collection, DNW Auction 83, 30 September 2009, lot 3995 [from Baldwin September 1988]; DNW Auction 157, 21 February 2019, lot 459 The vendor points out that the first three obverse dies of what we call Class C all link with reverses that have a small d under v of vill, obviously harking back to the earlier class B coins. Later dies have details that more closely link with the coins of D1. Chronologically therefore, Stewart’s C2 should precede C1.
David II (1329-1371), Second coinage, Class B, Groat, class B3d, Edinburgh, mm. cross pattée, second intermediate bust, tressure of six arcs, nothing in spandrels, crosslet stops after david and gra, double crosslet after dei and rex, nothing after scotorvm, d under r of rgh, ornate as both sides, 3.89g/7h (SCBI 35, 378-80, same obv. die; B 19a, fig. 279A, same dies; S 5097). Buckled and with a small edge chip, good fine or better, rare £150-£200 --- Provenance: Bt M. Vosper May 2013 This obverse die has been found coupled with five Edinburgh reverses (including this one) and an extremely rare Aberdeen reverse. It is recorded that the king spent time in the north-east in the latter part of 1362 and was in Aberdeen in early 1363
