DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge ('Lewis Carroll'). Alice's Adventures Under Ground. [Camden, New Jersey: printed for Eldridge R. Johnson by Max Jaffe, Vienna, 1936]. 8° (186 x 118 mm). 37 illustrations by the author, 14 of these full-page, photographic portrait of Alice mounted on final leaf; loosely inserted leaf providing alternative ending of the text. Original limp green morocco gilt, original green slipcase (foot of spine chipped, joints rubbed, slipcase lightly rubbed). A PERFECT PRINTED FACSIMILE OF CARROLL'S FAMOUS MANUSCRIPT. In 1936 the American collector Eldridge R. Johnson arranged for this collotype facsimile of the original manuscript (which he purchased at auction in 1928 through Rosenbach) to be printed privately in a very limited run for presentation to friends. 'It is not too extravagant to say that this production is as near perfection as is possible for a printed facsimile' (Selwyn Goodacre and Denis Crutch in Jabberwocky: The Journal of the Lewis Carroll Society, Autumn 1978). Following Johnson's death in 1944, the manuscript was offered again at auction and was again purchased by Rosenbach, who arranged for it to be presented to the British Nation through contributions from American subscribers. FIRST EDITION, one of two states with the cancel at X3 containing a list of errata. 'Ridley gives directions for carrying out experiments on the loadstone, magnet, and terrella. He includes numerous engravings and descriptions of his improved instruments for determining the declination of the magnetic needle and for making use of the inclinatory needle for finding position at sea' (ODNB). This copy may have belonged to an associate of the trading company R. Van Brienen, owner of the Russian ship 'Soleure', now remembered for its peripheral role in the Spencer Perceval assasination. A cased set of six late Victorian silver napkin rings, each of concave shape and with continuous bright cut engraved foliate decoration (case af). Hallmarked Birmingham 1885, maker`s mark R&M. Gross weight 2.07 ozt (64.3 grams). Condition: All napkin rings have general surface wear, marks and scratches in keeping with their age. There is some tarnishing and it is possible to see the solder join on each. The bright cut engraving is a little rubbed but otherwise in fairly good condition. The hallmarks and maker`s mark are also rubbed but they are all still legible. The case is in poor condition and part of the front has fallen off completely so that it doesn`t close properly.
Edwardian silver sugar basin and cream jug, each with flared frilled rim, scrolling handles and raised above four shell mounted paw feet. Hallmarked Joseph Rodgers & Sons Sheffield 1903. Gross weight 7.6 ozt (239 grams). Condition: Overall the sugar and cream are in good condition and display wear commensurate with the age and use, with general scratches, marks and noticeable tarnishing and would benefit from a clean and polish. Each is numbered to the underside 3740, wiith the letter R marked to the underside of one foot of each. The hallmarks are clear and legible.
A pair of modern silver mounted clear and yellow glass candlesticks, each raised above a weighted base with graduated sphere stems and flared lip nozzle, hallmarked Lawrence R Watson & Co Birmingham 2005. Height measuring 8 1/2 inches (21.5 cm). Together with a similar smaller green example, hallmarked A.J. Poole Birmingham 2004. Height measuring 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm). Condition: Each of the three candlesticks are in good overall condition, there are general scratches and marks. There are some imperfections visible to the base of the yellow glass examples. There is a very small minor chip to the top rim of the green example. All hallmarks are clear and legible.
A similar pair of modern silver mounted wooden wine coasters, of circular straight sided form with stepped detail. Hallmarked Birmingham 2010, one made by A.J. Poole and the second Lawrence R Watson & Co. Diameter measuring approximately 3 3/4 inches. Condition: Both wine coasters are in very good overall condition, there are light scratches and finger print marks. One has a slight imperfection to the wood, the second does not have a circular silver panel to the inside centre of the wood. Hallmarked in different styles, both in good condition, clear and legible.
A modern scroll pierced silver dish of circular shaped form and raised above a circular footed base. Hallmarked R Hodd & Son London 1976. Maximum diameter measuring 9 1/4 inches (23.5 cm), weight 11.6 ozt (363 grams). Condition: The dish is in good overall condition, there are general scratches, marks and tarnishing in keeping with the age and use. The piece wobbles slightly. The hallmarks are clear and legible, the makers mark partly not visible, but likely to be as struck.
