CALCUTTA - AN INDIAN WINE GLASS COVER INDISTINCTLY MARKED, POSSIBLY HAMILTON & CO. OF CALCUTTA, 20TH CENTURY Of circular outline to a sweeping stylised knopped finial, engraved R to the rim, the underside engraved 24/25. XII.1921  11cm diameter, 99g Glass covers were essential in India for alfresco dining Lady Charlotte Canning (1817-1861), the first Vicerine of India wrote extensive diaries of her time there, which now serve as an invaluable source for Indian life during the British Raj. Her diaries now form part of the British Libraries collection, India Office Private Papers: Mss Eur F699, Papers of Charles Canning and Charlotte Canning, Earl and Countess Canning. In a letter to the Queen Lady Canning describes her surroundings;‘The greenness of Bengal surprised me even at first. Now it is quite dazzling the beauty of the rank & gigantic foliage is indescribable.’ Your Majesty once pitied me for the heat & the insects I should encounter. At the beginning of the rains sometimes the dinner table was covered with thousands of insects of all kinds as thick as in the drawers of a collection. Silver covers had to be put on all the glasses & it was really a curious sight.’The Prince of Wales' tour of India in 1921 followed the devastation of the First World War and the recent induction of Mahatma Gandhi to the Indian National Congress. It therefore proved to be a challenging tour which lasted four months in India. Departing Portsmouth in October, he travelled around India from Bombay to Calcutta and then from Madras to Karachi.  It was during this time that this glass cover was most likely used at the banquet for the Prince of Wales whilst staying in Calcutta. Engraved to the underside  24/25. XII.1921, the banquet held on Christmas eve, marks an important turning point in Indian and British rule history. The glass cover seen here illustrates the minute detail of the Prince’s Royal Tour and more pertinently the cost which was seen as a contributing factor to the demise of relations between India and British rule. The Prince did recognise this and proposed a meeting with Gandhi on the condition that he call off a hartal (the closure of shops and offices as a protest or a mark of sorrow) planned for the Prince’s arrival in Calcutta. However, Gandhi refused. The Royal Collection in their collection holds images of this trip and his arrival into the town RCIN 2702482.

CALCUTTA - A CASED INDIAN TEA CHEST / TEA CADDY HAMILTON & CO, OF CALCUTTA, MID 20TH CENTURY Modelled as a tea chest, inscribed "Presented to Mr D R Morris on his retirement from India by his many friends in Assam 4th April 1959" also a map of India, "Pure India Tea" and many signatures with presentation case  17cm high Provenance: Thomson & Roddick, Edinburgh Oriental and Works of Art, lot 64, 28th Nov 2019  Hamilton & Co are among the most recognisable names in Indian Colonial silver and were making many of the finest examples still extant of this fascinating period. Their style very much follows that of the British forms they left behind and while they do integrate and meld with local craftsmen and decoration it is there classically George III simple silver that is most commonly encountered. It is quite apt therefore that a parting gift for an esteemed colleague would have been acquired at Hamilton & Co. The tea chest is accompanied by a note detailing all the subscribers whose facsimile signatures appear engraved on the chest and these were all members of various Assam gymkhana clubs in the Assam region; including Sonari Gymkhana Club, Nahahkutia Club, Jorhat Club, Nazira Club and Moran Club. The list is printed on Sonari Gymkhana letter headed paper dated, 4th April 1959.Gymkhana clubs emerged during the British Raj in India for British expats to socialise and enjoy sporting events mainly equestrian. As an exclusive club, memberships offered high social networking for both business and pleasure. The Sonari Gymkhana Club was built in 1945 by the tea planters, with Assam, the largest tea producing state in India. The chest is a wonderful culmination of the importance of tea to India and the importance of Mr. Morris to the Assam area and the British Raj.

AN INDIAN PRESENTATION ‘RACKETS’ TROPHY UNMARKED The deep cup with a beaded border above and engraved inscription ‘D. C. LUSK ESQr BY ATHLETIC CLUB M.C.C.’ chased hunting depictions, with lions, elephants and hunters to the body, raised on three supports modelled as racket racquets, to a circular foot with a foliate border  18cm high, 7.9oz  The game of rackets was surprisingly borne in London prisons, particularly, Fleet Prison. First established in the 18th century, it took another hundred years for the game to become respectable after its introduction to Harrow school in 1822.  Charles Dickens does however mention in his novel The Pickwick Papers (1836–37) how the inmates played racket. The rules and etiquette can be found in the publication by Atkins, J. R. The Book of Racquets. A practical guide to the game and its history and to the different courts in which it is played, London: Frederick Warne, [1872] which details that the game itself is similar to other racket sports but is played in a 9.1m by 18.3m enclosed court, with a ceiling at least 9.1 m high., although it must be mentioned that in India, the roofs were removed.  Games could be long as leaving the court would mean forfeiting the match. The engraving to the border of this cup mentions the Athletic Club M.C.C. which may relate to a cricket club.
