A two handled presentation bowl, of poly-gonal form with shaped handles, engraved inscription, to Mrs. R. Garbutt by the Directors of the Blyth Ship Building and Dry Docks company on the occassion of the launch of the SS Veobniobe, 4th May 1920 on spreading base, 36.5oz. on ebonised plinth, 13 1/4in. Seebohm (Henry and Sharpe, R. Bowdler). A Monograph of the Turdidae. Or Family of Thrushes, 2 vols., [1898?]1902, photogravure port. frontis., 149 hand?col. lithos. after Keulemans, orig. printed wrappers retained at rear of each vol., t.e.g., remainder untrimmed, contemp. crimson morocco gilt, a little rubbed and scuffed at extrems., (ex?lib classification no. in gilt to foot of each spine), large 4to Edward E. Ayer Ornithological Library, p.570-71. A thorough monograph of a limited section of the family Turdidae, comprising the genera Geocichla, Turdus, Merula and Mimocichla .. Synonymy and a brief Latin diagnosis of each species are followed by detailed notes .. Seebohm had most of the plates prepared but, at his death, left his manuscript unfinished. Sharpe undertook to edit and complete the work .. The work was issued in thirteen parts. (2)
Montgomery (Bernard Law, Viscount Montgomery of Alamein). A series of one typed and fifteen autograph letters signed ('Montgomery of Alamein'), 27th April 1948 to 25th August 1961, all written in his capacity as President of Portsmouth Football Club, to the Club Chairman, R. Vernon Stokes, concerning Portsmouth Football Club matters, including arrangements to see games, good luck and congratulatory messages ('The Portsmouth team is going great guns .. Please congratulate the whole team from me on being top of the First Division' (18/10/48); 'I have written to [Reg] Flewin, the Club Captain as you suggest, and have congratulated him on the great success of the Club' (21/12/48); 'I would like us to win the League and the Cup. But what really matters is to win the League; it takes a good all?round team to do that, and I believe that should be our first and great objective' (3/2/49)), and more than a decade later concerns about the team's decline ('I asked [Freddie] Cox [Manager 1958-61] to lunch with me here last week and tell him about his players .. and [I] came to the conclusion that he lacks character and power to inspire confidence in others; all?in?all, he seemd to me to be a Third Division man, who may well put us down to that Division' (31/8/60)), mostly one or two pages and written on Montgomery's letterhead (both London and Milly, France), all but two with orig. envelopes, together with a photocopy of a lengthy ALS (16/8/60) giving his views on the reasons for Porstmouth's decline and what should be done about it, plus one ALS from Stokes to Montgomery in response to his letter and concerning Jubilee "birthday" Match celebrations against Arsenal on 27th November 1948 [which Portsmouth won 4-1 (18)
