A George III oak longcase clock, R Wright of Witham, with twin train eight day chiming movement, the white and gilt highlighted painted face with Roman numerals and subsidiary second dial, the dome top hood with fretwork and three orb finials over a plain case and shaped plinth base, 44 by 24 by 208cm high.
A typescript by Sir Philip Hendy regarding the Return of Goya's Duke of Wellington, to the author's agent, Joyce Weiner Associates, London, together with Manuel de la Conservation et de la Restauration des Peintures, 8vo, published 1939 by the Institut International de Cooperation Intellectuelle, dedicated 'To Philip Hendy from his ever grateful Helmut R, London, April 1939', and a typescript of the Technical Testing Methods and Van Gogh Falsifications: Retrospections on the Wacker case. Sir Philip Hendy was Director of the National Gallery from 1946-67 and his tenure was marred by two controversies; the Exhibition of Cleaned Pictures 1936-47, also known as the cleaning controversy, featuring paintings over restored by Helmuth Ruhemann, and the theft of Goya's portrait of The Duke of Wellington in 1961 which called in to question the adequacy of the Gallery's security. Provenance: The Estate of the Late Carlo Curley.

THOMAS DE QUINCY "Confessions of an English Opium Eater", published by James Hogg, Edinburgh and R. Greenbridge & Sons, London, second edition, leather bound with gilt decorated spine, together with CURRER BELL "Jane Eyre: An Autobiography", copyright edition in two volumes, volume one published by Leipzig Bernard Tauchnitz 1850 with marbled effect cloth boards and green and gilt decorated leather spine, bears library labels inscribed "William Agnew" with a further label inscribed "To Cicely Agnew in Memory of her Grandfather October 31st 1910" and another "R.Kingzett", together with volume two CONDITION REPORTS All with various labels and inscriptions. "Confessions ..." - binding with various wear, scuffs and dirt, pages with some discolouration and foxing, some very slight separation to front page and to inside front cover, but overall condition appears reasonable. Other two volumes with quite a lot of damage to spines and heavy wear to covers, some separating, discolouration to pages, covers coming apart from spine, and pages separating from spine.

Ensemble de 7 MANUSCRITS, le premier avec ADDITIONS autographes, [vers 1763-1765] ; 72 pages in-fol., avec de nombreuses ratures et corrections (certaines autographes), sous chemise titrée : Chef d’accusations, et reponses aux interrogatoires et confrontations. Ses reponses et projet de mémoire, et cotée 8e liasse C.H.DOSSIER SUR LA PREPARATION DE SA DEFENSE ET LES REPONSES DE LALLY AUX ACCUSATIONS PORTEES CONTRE LUI.* Pieces relatives aux chefs d’accusation et dont j’ay mémoire. 2 états de lettres et mémoires utiles pour sa défense, classés par événements : « à mon départ d’Europe », « Sur mon arrivée à Pond[ichér]y », « Sur St David », « Madras », « Retour de l’armée à Arcate », « Arrivée de l’escadre en 1759 au mois de 7bre », « Revolte de l’armée », « Envoy du S. de Bussy à Bassaletzingue », « Bataille de Vandavachy », « Investissement de Pond[ichéry] », « Capitulation », « Assassinat », etc. Lally a abondamment complété de sa main le premier état en insérant de nouveaux documents (« lettre de Landivisiau au sr Bussy […] par laquelle ce sr Landivisiau luy mandoit de se mefier de mes caresses »), ou des précisions telles que celle-ci, sur un compte de Bussy : « il signe avoir reçu 3 presents sur sa route d’environ 12 mil francs en tout, il en a peut-etre reçu 2 cent mil »…* Critiques du per cayer. Recommandations de Lally pour améliorer un mémoire pour sa défense, avec références aux pages du cahier manuscrit. Lally relève le « ridicule » et « l’extravagance » des dépositions contre lui. Plusieurs corrections et additions autographes.* Avertissement aux lecteurs d’un mémoire sur la perte de Pondichéry, suivi d’une Péroraison : « Les plus grands evenements dérivent souvent de si petittes causes que la politique des plus grands ministres en est confondue »… Quelques corrections autographes.* Mémoire de 31 pages, présentant d’abondantes ratures et corrections. « Le Cte de Lally prevoit avec douleur tous les obstacles que luy prepare un prejugé qui germe depuis 3 ans dans l’esprit de tout un public, prejugé accredité par le silence forcé où l’a reduit la rigoureuse captivité dans laquelle il gemit depuis 3 ans sans la plus petitte communication au dehors, prejugé enfin nourry par les cris et les intrigues d’une 100ne de personnes animées ou par un esprit de vengance des chatiments qu’en sa qualité de chef il a eû occasion de leurs infliger pour les malversations et brigandages qu’ils commettoient tous les jours dans l’Inde, ou par l’argent que 5 ou 6 chefs de cette cabale odieuse leurs ont prodiguée : mais il espere que le public ne se refusera pas à la lumiere de la verité »…Plus une liste de « Pieces justificatives contenues dans les deux premieres parties ».
An Italian 800 standard silver fruit bowl, by R Miracoli, 20th century, of lobed circular form, the edge moulded, diam 25cm; with further silver items to include two English trays/ stands, an English swing handle bon bon dish, a small English creamer and a small Continental white metal reticulated pedestal bowl, (6), (approx gross weight 25ozs).
BARRIE J. M.: (1860-1937) Scottish Novelist, created Peter Pan. A.L.S., with his initials J M B, one page, 8vo, Adelphi Terrace House, Strand, 5th January 1936, to R. Golding Bright. Barrie announces ' “The Newcomes†in this form is a joy and has joined “Vanity Fair†' and further adds 'I have not yet seen P[eter] Pan but hope to this week. I note Miss. Phil house's (?) success'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Barrie. Letters of Barrie referring to Peter Pan are rare and desirable. VG As well as his own work, Peter Pan, Barrie also refers to the works of William Makepeace Thackeray.

Tolkien, one page, 8vo, Headington, Oxford, 6th June 1966, to J. F. Wordsworth at Exeter College. Tolkien states that he won't be able to get to London on 29th June 'and take advantage of Armstrong's most delightful and generous invitation.' Accompanied by the original envelope. About EX
DOYLE ARTHUR CONAN: (1859-1930) Scottish Author, creator of Sherlock Holmes. A.L.S., A. Conan Doyle, one page, 8vo, Buckingham Palace Mansions, London, 20th February [1924], to Mr. R. Boddington. Doyle announces 'We took nearly £25 on Sunday and the speaker remitted his fee, so again I was not very far out' and continues 'We should have a great house on Sunday if the weather is decent. I think Dr. Lamont will be very good. Miss Dale will give a solo again.' Doyle further states 'Will you tell Mr. Ensor that I can only engage to give one lecture on May 15th. He can choose morning or evening. He seems to think I am giving two.' Matted in pale rose above the original envelope hand addressed by Doyle and alongside two different reproduction images of Doyle, one accompanied by his family. Framed and glazed in a plain wooden frame to an overall size of 15 x 16.5. A couple of very small, extremely light stains to the letter, not affecting the text or signature, VG
BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant General, founder of the Scout movement. A.L.S., R S S Baden Powell, two pages, 8vo, Princes Gate, London (although on the printed stationery of the Inspector General of the Forces, Horse Guards, Whitehall), 14th May 1907, to 'My dear Charlie'. Baden-Powell thanks his correspondent for their letter and explains that he hopes to be in town on the 27th June, 'if I am not in Norway - but it is a little uncertain' and also adding that the 11th July is not a certain date either. Together with Olave Baden-Powell (1889-1977) World Chief Guide, a major contributor to the Girl Guides movement. Wife of Robert Baden-Powell. T.L.S., Olave Baden-Powell, one page, 8vo, Melbourne, Australia, 25th November 1957, to Mr. Benson, on the printed stationery of the Menzies hotel. Baden-Powell thanks her correspondent for the warm welcome shown to her yesterday, continuing 'I count it as a very great privilege to have been allowed to come to speak in your Church….it was so very good of you to have encouraged the Guides….They certainly acquitted themselves well; and it will have given them great encouragement I am sure.' With blank integral leaf. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, otherwise VG, 2 Robert Baden-Powell's letter is written at an interesting time in his life; in August 1907 he held the first Brownsea Island Scout Camp, now regarded as marking the beginning of Scouting.
SCOTT ROBERT FALCON: (1868-1912) British Royal Navy Officer & Antarctic Explorer. A.L.S., R F Scott, two pages, 8vo, Eastern Club, Dundee, n.d. ('Friday', the date 22nd March 1901 in pencil in another hand in the upper left corner), to Mrs. Morgan. Scott states that his business in Dundee will delay him so that he will not get away on Saturday night, although adds 'But I still hope to take advantage of your invitation for Sunday', further explaining 'This will require a little consultation of train & bicycle routes & a certain dependence on weather but I hope not to have much difficulty in finding my way down.' Scott concludes by informing his correspondent 'The launch of the Discovery was safely accomplished yesterday. It has been a great event for Dundee but rather an ordeal for myself.' With blank integral leaf. VG The RRS Discovery was constructed by the Dundee Shipbuilders Company for Scott's British National Antarctic Expedition, now known as the Discovery Expedition, 1901-04. She was launched into the Firth of Tay on 21st March 1901 by Lady Markham, the wife of Sir Clements Markham, President of the Royal Geographical Society. The last traditional wooden three-masted ship to be built in Britain, the Discovery is now the centrepiece of a visitor attraction in her home city of Dundee.
BROWN ARTHUR WHITTEN: (1886-1948) Scottish Aviator, navigator of the first successful non-stop transatlantic flight piloted by John Alcock, June 1919 & SCOTT GEORGE HERBERT (1888-1930) Royal Air Force officer, pilot of the airship R-34 on the first double crossing of the Atlantic (east-west-east) in July 1919. An attractive printed 4to souvenir sheet featuring a blue printed crest at the head and the printed words beneath, 'In Tribute to the Pioneers of the British Empire Whose Lives and Services Have Been Given to The Science of Aeronautics This Page Has Been Autographed By', signed by both Brown and Scott individually, both with their names alone in dark fountain pen ink. An unusual and scarce combination of signatures. EX
MARY OF TECK: (1867-1953) Queen Consort of the United Kingdom 1910-36, wife of King George V. Autograph Memorandum Signed, Mary R, two pages, oblong 8vo, Sandringham, Norfolk, 2nd September 1939, to Miss. C[atherine] Black. The Queen thanks her correspondent for her kind letter and messages and continues 'Things look pretty bad - I am preparing for a flight to the West & am taking the grandchildren (Kents) who are with me here', further reporting 'I enjoyed my visit to Papworth, such a hive of industry, & the 'nurses' house charming….my finger is better, Sir Alfred W. J. having removed the nail, he spent a fortnight here doing it! It was a painful business & spoilt my rest here.' Accompanied by the original Registered envelope hand addressed by Queen Mary and signed ('M.R.') with her initials in the lower left corner. VG Queen Mary's letter is written the day before World War II was declared on 3rd September 1939. Catherine Black, fondly known as Blackie, served as nurse to King George V from 1928 until his death in 1936, and remained a friend of the Royal family. Sir Alfred Webb-Johnson (1880-1958) British Surgeon who served Queen Mary from 1936-53.
