Joseph Robinson Kirk (1820-1894) RHA. A white marble bust of a gentleman, possibly the late O'Bryen Bellingham Esq., MD inscribed verso 'J R Kirk Sculpscit in Marmore 1857', height 26.5in.O'Bryen Bellingham (1803-1857), a distinguished Dublin surgeon of the day, published a treatise on the diseases of the heart. Kirk's posthumous bust of Bellingham was shown at the Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibition, 1859.

ALLOM, Thomas. China: in a series of views displaying the scenery, architecture, and social habits of that ancient empire.London, Fisher, Son, & Co., [ca.1843]. Thomas Allom (1804-1872) the noted topographical artist, at a time of increased interest in China, presented the Western world with the most complete portrait of China and Chinese culture up to the middle of the nineteenth century. The engravings show architecture and scenic views, mainly of the South-East (Hong Kong, Canto, Macao, Nanjing, and Shanghai) but also include several images of Peking and Yehol. As well as his own observations, Allom includes some images based on the work of earlier artists such as Lieutenant Frederick White, R.M., Captain Stoddart, R.N. and R. Vaughan. The text was by George Wright, a protestant missionary who had spent a considerable time in China. 4 volumes bound in 2, 4to., engraved title-page to each volume, 124 finely engraved steel-plates after Allom. Contemporary black half-morocco gilt, gilt centrepiece to upper cover, all edges gilt, occasional light spotting, overall a clean, fresh copy. Cordier 80-81; Lust 363; Lowendahl 986.

These hand-coloured aquatints were etched by H. Menke and J. Buck after drawings by T. Hulley, and depict the Montpellier Pump Room, the Assembly Room, Hygeia House, the Crescent, Well Walk, Old Wells and Pump Room. First edition. Landscape folio (37 x 29 cm). 6 hand-coloured aquatint plates. Modern half calf, marbled boards, morocco label to upper cover, original front wrapper with title, imprint and date surrounded by an acanthus border bound in. Abbey Scenery 93.
