The OAKLEY HILL FAMILY - a large archive of original letters, mostly personal, both 19th cent., & later many relating to Dayrell R. Oakley Hill (1898-1985), being correspondence sent & received * the writer born in South Africa, & at Sandhurst pre WW1, during which he served with the Indian Army in Mesopotamia. Later seconded to command King Zog's Gendamerie in Albania; during WW2 he served with the SOE. in Belgrade & Kosovo organising the local Resistance, being held P.O.W. from 1941-43. Postwar headed a UN mission to Albania providing humanitarian aid. His Secret Service career during the 1950s included time at the British Embassy in Athens, having previously been involved in the Tirana debacle of 1949. A life story which could have stepped straight out of a John le Carre novel, this archive will repay careful study; his autobiography 'An Englishman in Albania: memoirs of a British Officer, 1929-1955' (2002) should be an absorbing read.
