This is a traditional toy made all over the world, mostly in painted form (see Index). Strato Anagnostos, Australian, Tombola Kaleidoscope, Huon pine (Dacrydium Franklinii), glass, approx. 36.5cm high, 38cm wide, 17.8cm deep; together with a quantity of assorted kaleidoscopes, including: one by Laughing Coyote (R and C. Lee, Rockville, USA), wood, resin, dried leaves, signed in pen, approx. 33.2cm high; and various other examples (lot) Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: Tombola Kaleidoscope: The ball can be turned round in any direction, making for changing and highly coloured displays through the kaleidoscope. The eyepiece is capped for protection. When the cap is removed it exudes the scent of the pinewood and shows the original paler colour of the wood. Huon Pine grows in south-western Tasmania in swampy and moist soils and is extremely slow growing. It contains methyl eugenol, an essential oil which repels insects and gives the wood its characteristic smell. Laughing Coyote Kaleidoscope: In this type of kaleidoscope the patterns are made by turning the two wheels, with their transparent coloured inserts, usually in opposite directions. The effects are remarkable. The patterns take the normal hexagonal repetitive shape owing to the triangular configuration of the mirrors.Provenance: Tombola: Purchased, Naturally Australian Pty, Sydney, Australia, Clive Barker, John Ellerton, October 1997.Laughing Coyote: Purchased, Fine Wood Products, Glasgow, Scotland, July 1990.Roseberys do not guarantee the working order of any automata or toy.
