ABBASID: al-Ma`mun, 810-833, AR dirham (2.86g), Isbahan, AH204, A-224, lovely strike, choice Very Fine to Extremely Fine, R. `Ali b. Musa al-Rida, Imam of the Shi`ite faction, was named heir to the caliphate as part of a failed attempt to reconcile the Sunni and Shi`ite branches of Islam. Unfortunately, al-Rida died in AH203, and it is believed that the posthumous issues of AH204-205 still citing al-Rida may have been produced in hopes of finding an alternative means of reuniting the Sunnis and Shi`ites. ALMORAVID: `Ali, 1106-1142, AV dinar (4.15g), Aghmat, AH512, A-466.1, fabulous strike, small scratch in the obverse margin, perhaps medieval owner`s control mark, choice About Uncirculated, R. This piece is one of the loveliest Almoravid dinars I`ve ever seen, a magnificent strike and almost perfectly centered, without a trace of weakness. The mint name Aghmat is pointed with 1 dot above the letter gh and 2 dots above the t, so that the reader would know precisely how to pronounce the name of the mint city in Arabic.
