Richard Whitford (flourished 1854-1887) An ornate gilt and gesso framed, very well executed large Oil painting on stretchered canvas of four horses saddled up ready to replace the exhausted mounts of the avid huntsmen seen in the middle distance skirting a broad-leaf wood together with a pack of hounds in the undulating landscape. Other hunt followers on foot and on horses are seen in the landscape, some approaching down a track from a hilltop village. Signed "R. Whitford" lower right. 34" x 50" approx. This work resembles in many ways a painting by the same artist entitled "Saddling up and waiting for the hunt" which was included in the Christie's Pipewell Hall Sale, apparently with a pre-sale estimate of £15,000 to £20,000.
