Original decorated cloth (extremities somewhat bumped, spines faded and slightly soiled, joints splitting, stitching weak and a few leaves now loosely inserted). Provenance: ex-library (bookplate, occasional inkstamps and blindstamps).
DARWIN, Charles. The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection sixth edition, with additions and corrections. London: John Murray, 1878. 8vo (188 x 114mm.) (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary half-calf, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettering pieces in the second and fourth, the others with repeat decoration in gilt (extremities with minor scuffing). Provenance: R. Williams (signature to title-page, inscription to first few leaves and occasional annotations).
A pair of George III baltic pine ship carvings, relief carved depicting Pallas Athena sinistra and dextera, each mounted on an oval plaque, 52.6 x 38cm wide. (2) Provenance: The Property of Harriet Wynter, removed from R?sidence St. Michel, Cannes, France. There were seven Royal Navy Fifth rates that bore the name of H.M.S. Pallas and several that took part in notable actions, including: Cornwallis`s Retreat 1795, Egypt 1801 and Basque Roads 1809. By repute the ship was sunk off the coast of Denmark and that these carvings were bought from a ship salvage sale in 1902 in Bogestrommen, Copenhagen, Denmark. They were subsequently sold by Christie`s in the 1980s.
