Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve (Drake) Battalion, WWI British War Medal awarded to R/2112 Able Bodied Seaman Robert Campbell, complete with two lug Drake Battalion cap badge, Campbell born 23rd February 1898, enlisted in the 1st Highland Cycle Battalion on 26th September 1916 and transferred to the 2nd Reserve Battalion of the Royal Navy on the 16th June 1917, on the 4th July 1917 was drafted to the Drake Battalion and embarked from Folkstone to Boulonge, France, later seeing action during the Second Battle of Passchendale and the Action at Welsh Ridge, on 12th March 1918 the Germans carried out a heavy gas bombardment along the Tresault Valley sector of the front line , Campbell was among those reported to be effected by the Poisonous Gas, being admitted to No.16 Hospital at Treport, Campbell was sent back to the UK where he was admitted to Queen Mary Military Hospital to recover, after which he returned to the front line on 25th August, seeing action at the Battles of Drocourt-Queant, Canal du Nord and Cambrai, on 8th October 1918 the battalion launched a successful attack west of Niergnies (part of the Battle of Cambrai) during which Campbell received gun shot wounds to his abdomen and left thigh, being evacuated on the 46th Casualty Station, later passing away from his wounds, just 34 Days before the end of the War

This copy is the very first pressing on Parlophone with the distinctive 'black and gold' labels (PCS 3042, with Dick James credits for tracks A1, A2, A6, A7, B4 and B6). The record is in VG+ condition with hairlines/ scuffs across the playing surfaces, none of which are feelable. Labels are clean and clear. ZMT tax code on side 2. Matrix/mother/stampers: YEX 94-1 1 R & YEX 95-1 1 G. The first pressing ('right' aligned Angus McBean credit) sleeve is in VG condition with tearing to the corners of the cover, also staining to the bottom left of the sleeve and storage/edgewear. Aside from the last 3 letters, the spine is fully legible.
