The Medals and Uniforms of Major General John Stratford Collins CB A magnificent and rare grouping attributed to Major General John Stratford Collins CB who after commanding the 1st Bn Royal West Surrey Regiment was promoted Major General commanding the 2nd (Rawalpindi) Division and died of cholera on the 27th April 1908. #11;Comprising: Medal Group”#11;Order of the Bath CB Gold and enamel, bearing hallmarks London 1843, Delhi Durbar Medal 1903 (Unnamed as issued), India General Service Medal 1854, bearing two clasps, “Burma 1887-89”, “Burma 1885-7”, “MAJOR J.S. COLLINS 2ND BN R.W. SURREY R”, India General Service Medal 1895, bearing two clasps, “Punjab Frontier 1897-98”, “Tirah 1897-98”, “LIEUT COL J.S COLLINS 1ST BN RYL W. SURR REGT”. The group remains mounted with original ribbons as worn by the General .... Uniforms:#11;Generals Scarlet tunic of regulation pattern, with rounded collar. Retaining bullion shoulder cords with Major General rank and to the left breast provision for wearing medals. The interior with quilted silk lining. Scarlet and bullion remain fresh, minor age wear ... Frock coat of regulation pattern, dark blue cloth with purple velvet facings to the collar and cuff, the shoulders with bullion cords with Major General rank insignia. To the left breast, medal ribbons. Slight age wear to collar ... Frock tunic of dark blue woollen cloth tailored with breast and false waist pockets. Complete with Generals gorget patches, buttons and Major General rank to the shoulder straps. The left breast with medal ribbons. Overall GC ... Patrol Tunic, dark blue material with dark blue velvet facings. To each breast five black flat mohair cord loops. The interior with quilted lining. Some overall moth holes .... 1902 Pattern Officer’s service dress tunic. Tailored with the correct stand and fall collar, these with scarlet gorget patches indicating a General Officer of the Headquarters. The shoulder straps with Major General rank badges and complete with General’s pattern buttons .... General Peaked Cap. A superb early example, with Generals bullion cap badge and two rows of gold bullion oak leaves to the peak ... Generals pattern Field Service Side Cap. Complete with bullion cap badge ... trousers and overalls plus a quantity of hot climate uniform, mess kit etc ... Contained in original uniform tunic, retaining newspaper lining for 1907. Overall GC (Large quantity). Major General John Stratford Collins CB was born in 1851 at Wythall, Ross, Herefordshire. He was commissioned an Ensign in the 2nd Foot in 1869 and Captain in 1881. Lieutenant Colonel Commanding the 1st Battalion Queen’s Regiment 1896 and Colonel 1898. He commanded the Battalion from 1896 to 1901. Major General 1903 and in 1906 was Inspector General of Volunteers India. In 1907 he was commanding the 2nd Division at Rawalpindi when he fell ill and died the following year 1908. He was created a Companion of the Bath in 1905 and was twice Mentioned in Despatches. The trunk of uniforms was acquired by the vendor at the auction sale of the contents of Wythall Hall on the 24th June 1969 for the grand sum of £12. The original catalogue and receipt remain with the lot. The medals were reunited with the uniforms at a later date. A photograph of the Gernaral accompanies the lot

Centre mounted in silver with ducal crown. stag’s head and motto scroll “Tulloch Ard”. Plain ends. Minor service wear, VGC
WW1 Royal Horse Guards / Guards Machine Gun Regiment. Group of Three Medals awarded to Jewish Recipient. Awarded to “1815 TPR W. LUPINSKY R. H. GDS”. Comprising: 1914/15 Star, “TPR R.H. GDS”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, “TPR R.H. GDS”. Medals loose ... Accompanied by a small quantity of research. Trooper Wolf Lupinsky was born in Middlesex and enlisted into the Royal Horse Guards on October 1914, he embarked for France on the 18th May 1915 and on the 16th September 1916 was wounded. He rejoined his Regiment on the 31st October 1916 and on the 10th May 1918 is noted as transferring to the Guards Machine Gun Regiment. He returned to the UK in February 1919.
WW2 Showa Period Japanese Officer’s “Surrender” Sword with accompanying Paperwork & Provenance. A scarce near complete grouping, this being the sword of Lieutenant Yosuida an Artillery Officer of the Southern Army. Comprising: Sword, this with a 27 inch polished blade of good quality. The tang with maker’s stamps, indicating made by O-Gawa Kanekuni of Noshu Province. The hilt with military mounts the pommel with a family “Mon” indicating Yosuida. Housed in painted metal scabbard. The sword retains original sword knot and brown leather field cover for the handle. The scabbard with original linen surrender label giving details of the original owner and his unit details. Good clean condition ... The sword is accompanied by the original Certificate of Possession allowing 14763319 Sergeant R Brown to have the sword issued by the Special Investigation Branch May 1946 ... A photograph of Sergeant Brown and Lieutenant Yosuida ... Silk Japanese Prayer flag with signatures. Overall condition is near Very Good a very complete and comprehensive grouping. Interpretation of tang markings and surrender label accompanies the lot. The interpretation of the markings on the tang and label are supplied by the vendor. Potential buyers should satisfy themselves to the accuracy of the interpretation before bidding.
Badge. Scottish. Royal Scots Fusiliers, Royal Ayr & Wigtown (Prince Regent’s) Militia plaid brooch circa 1881. A good rare large unmarked silver example by R & HB Kirkwood, 66 & 68 Thistle St. Edinburgh. Quoit mounted with continuous scroll inscribed “Royal Scots Fusiliers. Royal Ayr & Wigtown” and thistle wreath bearing Prince of Wales’s plumes over scroll “Prince Regents”. Kirkwood’s thistle logo to reverse which bear stout pin. VGC Became 4th Bn. Royal Scots Fusiliers in 1881.
1st Bn Cheshire Regiment India General Service Medal, clasp “Chin-Lushai 1889-90” Awarded to “1590 PTE H. HYRONS 1ST BN CHES R”. Suspension slightly slack Private Henry Hyrons, a native of Birmingham enlisted on the 20th March 1895. He was discharged in 1897, this appears to be his only medal entitlement.
Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Queen’s South Africa Medal & British War Medal. This pair of medals were awarded to Private Alfred Clinton. Comprising: Queen’s South Africa Medal, three clasps, “Orange Free State”, “Transvaal”, “South Africa 1902”, “4482 PTE RL INNIS FUS”, British War Medal, “4482 PTE R. INNIS FUS”. Medals have been lacquered. Private Alfred Clinton enlisted in December 1893, still serving in 1914 he landed with the regiment 0n the 23rd August 1914, thus entitled to a 1914 Star Trio. He was discharged on the 19th December 1915 due to the termination of his second period of service and age of 41 years. He was discharged with the Silver War Badge.

Railwayana - Local Interest - a printed certificate made to mark the retirement from service of the Midland Raiwlay art Derby of the locomotive superintendent, Samuel Waite Johnson, company arms at top, early 2-2-2 locomotive in cartouche at foot, on left side a portrait of Johnson superimposed over a view of his compound 4-4- 0 locomotive no. 1000 also in cartouche below, with text expressing esteem and with names of colleagues below in four columns: R. M. Deeley, W. H. Adams, L. Archbull, J. Bunting/W. Chatterton, F. Eveleigh, H. Fowler, F. Horton/C. H. Jones, W. J. Newbould, C. W. Paget, G. F. Pratt/R. G. Rosevere, J. W. Smith, A. Whitaker, W. Marriott, 11 by 13in (28 by 33cm) in plain oak frame. Samuel Waite Johnson (1831-1912) was the son of James johnsopn, later loco superintendent on the Nortgh Staffordshire railway, and was born at Bramley Yorks and educated at Leeds Grammar School vbefore going to work with E B Wilson & Co. He was locomotive superintendent of the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway to 1864, then to the Edinburgh and Glasgow to 1866, then to the Great Eastern to 1873, when he was appointed to the Midland Railway at Derby, retiring in 1903 and being succeeded by his assistant R M Deeley. He is famous for his successful Class 4 compound 4-4-0 express engines of which the rebuilt protoype No. 1000 is preserved. He died at Nottingham in 1912.

An early 20th century French slate eight day mantel clock, maker Grieve Co, Paris, the enamel and gilded dial set with Arabic numerals and presentation plaque to the base, 'Presented to Brother T. R. Yeeles by the members of the North Shields Branches of the Steam Engine Makers Society in recognition of twenty years' servitude as treasurer 14th November 1913', height 37cm.
Eight volumes of 'Modern Railway Working; A Practical Working Treatise by Engineering and Administrative Experts', published by the Gresham Publishing Co. 1912-1914, with a number of plates, a London and North Eastern Railway timetable covering 1st May to 2nd July 1939, and 'The Cheshire Lines Railway' by R. Prys Griffiths, a book on railway history dated 1947.
An Edwardian hallmarked silver and enamelled medallion inscribed 'Liverpool & Dist. Gymnasia League 1908-1909' centred with a blue enamel plaque set with a Liver bird, hallmarked for Birmingham 1909, also a cased Royal Life Saving Society medallion awarded to R. W. Prince Mar. 1936 with associated ribbon and bar.
A 19th century German brass wine cooler by Herman Robert Bichweiler, in Renaissance style, the ribbed lid with a ball finial above a lobed and spiral twist body with patinated ram's head mask ring handles, the base stamped 'R. BICHWEILER HAMBURG', 46.5cm high, 45.5cm wide. Herman Robert Bichweiler was a designer and architect and established 'Die Kunstgewerbliche Werkstätt' in partnership with Dr. E. Berlieu in Hamburg in 1878.
A 19thC porcelain sucrier, the inverted bellied body hand painted with flowers and butterflies, predominantly in green, orange, blue and yellow, flanked by moulded handles and surmounted by a domed lid with shaped knop, on a circular foot, numbered 53 beneath with handwritten label J R Daniel, 16cm high.
