A 21.5 x 13cm head and shoulders portrait of King Edward VII wearing a tweed... A 21.5 x 13cm head and shoulders portrait of King Edward VII wearing a tweed jacket and a homburg hat in Marienbad, signed and dated "Edward R 1903" in black ink, platinum photographic print laid down on the original mount of the celebrated photographic studio J. F. Langhans, contemporary leather frame by Walter Jones of Sloane Street with gilt decorative details, glass insert and gilt maker's name printed on the easel back; some age toning and scratching to photograph, frame central panel on the rear is detached, overall size 27 x 18.5cm. King Edward VII used to visit every year the renown spa of Marienbad in Bohemia, where he made serious -and partially succesful- efforts in order to lose some weight. The provenance of the photograph is impeccable, since it was given by the King himself to his mistress Alice Keppel and was then inherited by her daughter, the socialite and writer Violet Trefusis. Formerly the property of Alice Kepell.

Three Autograph letters, all on headed notecard, signed Three Autograph letters, all on headed notecard, signed ("A Conan Doyle"), to a journalist named Russell Goodwin-Smith who was writing a piece about the author, in which he discusses his wish not to be celebrated solely for Sherlock Holmes, saying "you might care to point out that apart from Sherlock Holmes I have written the Brigadier Gerard stories, the Professor Challenger books, a long line of historical novels including The White Company and Rodney Stone a book of poems, several successful dramas 'the Speckled Band' and much else", he also touches upon his historical non-fiction works, mentioning "the histories of the Boer War and of the Great War", as well as listing his work on Spiritualism and rescue of "two men falsley condemned Oscar Slater and George Edalji" amongst his greatest achievements. Doyle closes the letter by asserting that he gets "a little restive at being forever coupled with Holmes", 15 Buckingham Palace Mansions; the second, sent after the article has been written, expressing his opinion that it is "a charming one - too flattering but that will restore the balance of many that come my way", he goes on to say that he is "a strong man with a J pen and a weakling with a Waverley", Windlesham; and one other, a brief note to Mr. Goodwin-Smith ("R. Goodwin Smith"), confirming his availability for an appointment, 15 Buckingham Palace Mansions, April 1912; four pages, printed headings, oblong 8vo, [1912 and c.1919-1926] (3) ---- RARE LETTER BY DOYLE DISCUSSING SHERLOCK HOLMES AND HIS OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS. Sherlock Holmes was, and is, Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous creation, however the author would seldom discuss the works in his letters. This correspondence shows a rare case of Doyle expressing his thoughts about Holmes as well as other professional and personal achievements he views to be of equal or greater importance. Provenance: Left to the vendor's family in the will of Mr. Russell Goodwin-Smith, the recipient of these letters.
Autograph and printed document of appointment on vellum signed by three... Autograph and printed document of appointment on vellum signed by three British Government Customs commissioners appointing John Slayter to the role of Officer of the Customs at the Port of Halifax in Nova Scotia, stating that he has power to enter into any ship, bottom, boat or other vessel & also in the day time with a Writ of Assistants…next inhabiting to enter into any house, shop, cellar, warehouse or other place whatsoever…to make diligent search , with a post-script in autograph stating Security is given in the sum of five hundred pounds , embossed wafer seal, folding creases, signatures slightly faded, puncture hole to upper left margin, 30 September 1775. A fascinating document from the first year of the Revolutionary War and a pivotal moment in American history, illustrating the level of power given to British customs officers in the bid to prevent the smuggling of taxable items into or out of America. Indeed, at this time, the revenue acts were consistently disobeyed by the American colonists who disagreed with a policy that made them subordinate to the mother country (Neil R. Stout, New York History, Vol. 48, No. 4 (October 1967), p. 394). The previous few years had seen the colonists protesting what they saw as unfair taxation on British goods, culminating in the most iconic act of protest in 1773 with the Boston Tea Party. Following this, British officials enforced strict legislation on the colonies in an attempt to restore order and control until eventually peace broke down and open war began in April 1775.
Autograph letter signed to his nephew Prince Rupert Autograph letter signed ( Charles R ) to his nephew Prince Rupert ( Nepueu ), urging the Prince to prosecute the desyne of reli[e]ving Yorke and beating the Scots from which, he says, nothing must divert or slaken you, but direct impossibilities , one page, 8vo, addressed The King to P. Rupert and with instruction, 19th: instant brought hither on verso, folding creases, lower fold repaired, a few small holes with no loss to text, Burford, 17 June 1644 BEATING THE SCOTS - THE ROAD TO MARSTON MOOR. In early June 1644 Charles was forced to vacate his Oxford residence and march west through Yarnton, Long Hanborough and Burford, from where this letter was written, due to the increasing threat from the parliamentary army. The King touches upon this threat when he writes, the place where I am will cleerely show you the impossibility of my accepting of your proposition . In a rather vague manner, the King directs Rupert to prosecute the desyne of the relief of York yet leaves it in the Prince s hands to do as he chooses when it comes to aiding the Royal army, saying: but for the assisting of me or my Army, I leave you to doe therein, as you shall judge most for my service Twelve days after this letter was written Charles would lead his army to a victory at the Battle of Cropredy Bridge. The letter shows his preoccupation in the lead up to this, leaving the situation in the north in Rupert s hands. Following the King s victory, Rupert, on 2nd July 1644, led the Royalist soldiers in the north to a heavy defeat at Marston Moor in what some believe was the beginning of the end for the Royalist campaign.
