Letter books from Robert Stephenson and Company, Newcastle upon Tyne. When the engineering firm were sending out a letter to a customer or supplier, they would have taken the freshly written letter and placed it onto one of the blank pages in these books, by then pressing the letter and page together the image would be transferred - the paper is very thin so the reversed image can be read from the other side - this was a way of keeping a record of mail sent out. Because the books contain all the correspondence sent from the firm they provide a real insight into railway engineering history. the first book covers the period 1857-1862, 2nd book: 1867-1872, 3rd book: 1873-1880, 4th book: 1880-1884, 5th book: 1884-1888. The letters relate to all aspects of production. Interestingly they discuss many orders from international railways, those mentioned include: East India Railways, Great Indian Peninsula Railway, Natal Railway, Buenos Aires Railway, Great Western of Brazil Railway, Egyptian Railways, and Central Uruguay Railway. Engine parts and sizes are recorded and basic technical drawings are made, some with later adjustments and notes made in pencil. With international deliveries, diagrams and estimations seem to be made regarding shipping. Orders also include a pumping engine for Swannington pit, the former mine was filling with water, which could run through to other pits, so R. S. & Co. supplied the huge engine - one of the biggest in the world at the time. Railway enthusiasts may make sense of the technical information, and recognise names mentioned such as Patrick Sterling or John Dobson Wardale (head draughtsman at Stephenson's). The condition has expected wear from being from an engineering works - oily handling marks and toning at edges. The edges and corners of boards have rubbing and wear, the half-calf has rubbing and 3 of the books are missing the leather from the spines, book 1 has a detached board, but all boards and text-blocks are present. 11 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches (5)
