Horology - Derbyshire - a late Victorian/Edwardian turret-type industrial clock movement, by G. S Smith, 20, St. Peter Street, Derby, probably for a railway station or shop premises, cast iron plates and pillars, brass wheel work, winding arbour, 27.5cm high, brass maker's plate, the main elements present, c.1882 - 1903George Samuel Smith (1847-1925) was a younger son of John Smith, founder of the eponymous extant turret clock manufacturers in Derby. He was apprenticed to his father 1861-1868, thereafter worked for him for seven years before setting up on his own account with two men at 68 London Streety (now London Road) Derby. He moved to 20 St. Peter’s Street in 1882 and in 1903 to 66 St. Peter’s Street. He made lever watches, long case clocks and had a contract to supply the Midland Railway with watches and other clocks and is also known to have supplied a noctuaries to railway clients. He lived in Arboretum Terrace, 66, Osmaston Road with his wife Christiana Slater and children.
