L, 2nd approx. P (2)Footnotes:The Halsewell, an East Indiaman on her third voyage from London to Madras, was wrecked in 1786 off the coast of Dorset and the tragedy shocked the nation. The vicar of nearby Worth Matravers recorded how the ship was 'shattered to pieces'. Of over 240 crew and passengers, only 74 survived. King George III visited the scene of the tragedy. The wreck of the Halsewell was the subject of poems, paintings (including one by JMW Turner) and an orchestral symphony. Charles Dickens later described the wreck in a short story.
