R. WARDLE DURH. L.I.” Ralph Wardle was a 19 year old Miner from Greenwood Gate, Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham when he attested for the Durham Light Infantry in September 1914. Arriving in France on 11th September 1915 he served as a Bugler in C Company and his record shows he was wounded 3 times in 1916 (19/2, 27/4 and 18/9). He received multiple shrapnel wounds on 22nd April 1917 during the Battalions attack on Dynamite Magazine in the Lens/Loos sector of the line. The initial attack was successful but during the day heavy casualties were taken from sniping, bombardments and multiple counter attacks until at 4.45pm the 25 remaining men retreated to Nero trench. At some time during the day Ralph was transferred to 33 C.C.S. where he died from his wounds 2 days later. During the period 20-23rd April the battalion’s casualties were 2 Officers and 24 Other Ranks killed, 10 Officers and 173 Other Ranks wounded and 24 missing. It is sobering to note that the page of the roll for the 1914-15 star on which Ralph Wardle’s name appears has 12 other names listed all of whom are also shown as dead.
