RARE WW2 RAF Mosquito multi signed Special Cover No. 2 including RAF Ace Sir John William Maxwell Aitken (1910 1985) 2nd Baronet, DSO, DFC, briefly 2nd Baron Beaverbrook in 1964, was a Canadian British fighter pilot and flying ace of the Second World War, a Conservative politician, and press baron. He was the son of Max Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook. Aitken served as a pilot with No. 1 Squadron RAF during the Battle of Britain with some success, he was C/O of No. 68 Squadron RAF, a night fighter unit, from February 1941 until January 1943, claiming four night victories, Aitken became Wing Leader of the Banff Strike Wing RAF Coastal Command in 1944 which included 143, 235, 248 and 333 Squadrons all flying Mosquitos. He reached the rank of Group Captain, achieving 16 1/2 aerial victories. Group Captain R Gordon Slate OBE. As O/C Testing Flight at Boscombe Down he was responsible for carrying out the RAF proving trials for the Mosquito until October 1941 and then he was given command of the First Mosquito Fighter Squadron 157 formed at Debden on December 13th 1941. Squadron Leader R C Muir DFC. A member of 605 Squadron, the navigator with Mosquito VI UP R flown by Wing Commander B R O'Brien Hoare DSO DFC who was the only one eyed pilot allowed on operational duties in the RAF. Hoare survived the war but died in a flying accident in Malaya in 1948 and Mr W J Goldsmith was the man who saved the prototype Mosquito from destruction and the owner of Salisbury Hall, home of the Mosquito Museum. All four signed on a Mosquito Aircraft Museum, Salisbury Hall, St Albans 35th Anniversary of the D.H. Mosquito MAM4 cover 1975, flown in a Mosquito T MkIII with a historical sheet giving details of the signatories. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Robert Taylor Bogeys! Eleven O'clock High Artist Proof signed by American WW2 P 38 Lightning pilots who ambushed Admiral Yamamoto in the most successful aerial intercept mission of World War II. This is an Artist Proof number 53 /125 published in 1993 and is supplied with the original Certificate of Authenticity. The print is signed by the artist Robert Taylor and Colonel John Mitchell, Lieutenant Colonel Roger J Ames, Colonel Rex Barber, Lieutenant Colonel Doug Canning, Captain Delton Goerke, Captain Larry Graebener, Major Julius Jacobson and Lieutenant Colonel Louis R Kittel. The print measures approximately 38 x 24.5 inches has been stored flat, out of the light and is in very good condition. A Victorian silver plated table centre candelabra in the Egypto-Classical Revival taste, the centre pedestal with candle holder and drip tray holding two tiers of three graduated arms with candle holders and drip trays, each with ram's head finials and scrolling and floral medallion decoration, raised on a tapering fluted column with acanthus knop, raised on a trefoil base set with hippocampus, inscribed "Presented by the Congregation of St. Andrew Undershaft to the Revd A R Vardy M.A. as an Expression of their Affection and Esteem July 1872", 83 cm high x 49 cm wide approx CONDITION REPORTS One of the branches is loose and has been packed with tin foil. Base has some knocks, bumps, etc, pitting throughout as well as a small crack / fault line near one of the hippocampus's wing base. Three of the candle sconces arms have damage - one of which appears to have been repaired. Generally in need of a clean. Residue of cleaning material in some areas. General wear and tear to include surface scratching, some pitting, etc all conducive with age and use. See images for more details.
