A WW1 1915 Star trio, awarded to E-1167 Pte Robert Samuel Burrage of the 17th (Empire) Battalion Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). To include: the 1915 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Complete with their original silk ribbons. Notes: Private Burrage has his star marked as ‘P F Burrage’ and the BWM and Victory Medal is marked as ‘R S Burrage’. Two medal index cards exist, with each referencing the other, making it clear that there was an administrative error made with naming (too late for the naming on the star). Pte Burrage first entered the conflict in France on November 17th 1915. He was discharged from service on January 30th 1918 under King’s Regulation 392 paragraph 16 (no longer physically fit for service). Condition: generally very good. Some age related toning to the medals, but very little sign of polishing. The Victory medal retains almost all its gilt finish.
3 late 19th century Mahdist Sudanese spears, as collected from the field of the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. Each spear has a type written tie on label attached stating ‘Battle of Omdurman 1898. Field Marshall Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener. Three spears picked up by Captian Richard Bower (born Le Harve 8-8-1862, died 1919) and his brother Paul from the battlefield’. Each spear fits the typical patterns seen circa 1880, with one having a broad leaf shape blackened iron tip, of flattened diamond form, with this in turn being mounted on a hardwood shaft, with a hollow iron ferrule. Another example follows an elongated leaf pattern, again of flattened diamond form, and of blackened iron. The third piece has a blackened iron barbed head, with a small leaf shaped tip. Notes: it’s unclear exactly who Captain Richard Bower is and which regiment he served in. There is a Lt R L Bower mentioned in the Army Lists of 1882, as part of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th battalion Rifle Brigade, with subsequent mentions into the 20th century as he moved through the ranks. The 2nd Bt Rifle Brigade were known to have served at Omdurman, so this is a possibility. The Bower family had several generations that served in the British Army, in the 19th and 20th centuries, and these spears have been passed down to the current family member, and have never been offered for sale previously. Approximately 179cm length to the longest example, the smallest being 165cm in length. Condition: generally solid throughout, but with age and service wear. The largest of the spears has age cracking to the wooden shaft, and a little light surface corrosion to the head. The other 2 examples have some small losses to the wooden shafts, but are solid. The blackened iron heads also have a little old surface corrosion. The labels will post date 1919, and would appear to date from around the mid 20th century.
A WW1 British War Medal, awarded to 202622 Pte Thomas Steven of the 4th Reserve Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers, plus a his WW1 era cap badge, and a WW2 Defence Medal in box of issue (addressed to Mr H R M Steven of Caithness - a relative?). Notes: Pte Steven’s medal index card confirms that he is entitled to the pair. Other records state that he enlisted for service on December 10th 1915 at the age of 36 years and 10 months, and was a teacher in Edinburgh in civilian life. Condition: the BWM is missing its ribbon bar, with just the disc and part of the suspension left. It is complete with a replacement ribbon. The cap badge is tarnished with age, but is complete, and the Defence medal remains in good condition.

Mid section with gilt painted ‘V.1.R’ on a green background. Original drilled hole to end of handle for attaching a leather wrist strap. Approximately 45cm length. Condition: generally solid, with age and service wear. Normal signs of use in the form of paint chips and tiny knocks to the surface of the wood. No apparent splits or losses to the wood. Good overall colour and patina to the wood.
A scarce, late 19th century / pre Boer War Royal Navy Midshipman’s log, completed by Heinrich Richertz Kunhardt (1880-1913). The log runs from August 1896 through to March 1899, covering his time serving on the ships, HMS Fox, HMS Blake, and HMS Niobe. Marbled boards to back and front, with calf leather spine and gilt lettering, which reads ‘S.519 Late S.625 Log Book For Use Of Junior Officers Afloat’. The log book has daily entries, detailing the weather, with wind speeds and direction, barometer and thermometer readings, plus details of task carried out, such as training, drills, scrubbing canvases and hammocks, testing life buoys, prayers, and many other duties. The log is also illustrated with hand coloured charts and maps, a number of which are initialed ‘HRK’. An entry for October 1896 also has a nicely drawn and coloured side profile of a Lee Metford, the standard service rifle of the era. Notes: Heinrich Richertz Kunhardt was born in Stellenbosch, South Africa on August 11th 1880. He enrolled for service with the Royal Navy on July 15th 1894, just short of his 14th birthday. At the time of him completing the ships log, he held the rank of Midshipman, but by the time of the Boer War he was a Lieutenant. According to official records, Lt Kunhardt died at sea in 1913, with his body being transferred to the Hong Kong Hospital. The official cause of death was noted as being ‘Alcoholism and Cardiac Failure’. The log is complete with its original heavy canvas cover, inscribed ‘H R Kunhardt Log Book’ to the front. Approximately 32.5cm x 21.2cm x 3.5cm. Condition: generally structurally sound. Some wear and tear commensurate with age and use, such as loss of the marbled paper covering to the rear board, a couple of loose pages to the inside, and a small amount of warping. The internal pages are quite clean and legible, as are the maps, charts, and illustrations.
A WW1 era sterling silver English Lever pocket watch, by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd London, as issued to the Royal Artillery. Hallmarked to the inside of the casing for London 1916, with the makers mark of R&S for Rotherham & Sons. 15 Jewel movement, engraved ‘Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd’. Hinged back cover, engraved with a broad arrow mark ‘R.A’, and the serial number 30191 K. White enamel dial with Roman numerals, and subsidiary dial at the 6 o’clock position. The crown is hallmarked with a different date letter, with it appearing to be a Birmingham letter q for 1915, which may suggest a period repair. The watch measures approximately 4.7cm wide across the face. Condition: cosmetically good. Normal light marks to the casing from service wear, plus clean dial and hands. The lever mechanism for setting the time appears to work as it should, and the watch seems to run well when wound, but this is by no means a guarantee of its timekeeping. Note: regarding watches/pocket watches please note movements untested, functionality untested, for more information request a condition report with specific questions or please view in person
A Korea Medal, and United Nations Korea Medal awarded to Imjin River prisoner of war, and later casualty, 22231688 Spr R. Harvey of the Royal Engineers. Named to the rim of the Korea Medal, and the United Nations Medal being unnamed as issued. Also included is the original issue box for the United Nations Medal, a spare period ribbon (with type written note), and a condolence slip named to Sapper Harvey. Notes: Spr Harvey’s name appears in the published list of Korea POW’s by Peter Gaston. His capture date is noted as 25.4.51, the last day of the Battle of Imjin River. He is also noted as originally being listed as missing, with a later note confirming that he had officially been listed as dead. Information suppled by the family of Spr Harvey suggests that he died from disease while held captive. Condition: very good. Understandably, the medals appear to be unworn, with just normal age related toning. Complete with clean original ribbons for each. The card issue box have a few darker marks to the lid.

A RARE PAIR OF GEORGE III COADE STONE FIGURAL CANDELABRA BY ELEANOR COADE, LAMBETH, LATE 18TH CENTURY The design attributed to John Bacon, one modelled as a Vestal the other as a Sibyl, each holding a candle branch socket, on circular plinth, both stamped 'COADE LAMBETH" to plinths, stamped Coade to the undersides, monogrammed with an 'R' inside the torsos approximately 140cm high to top of lights, bases 43.5cm diameter Eleanor Coade (d.1821) opened her Lambeth Manufactory for ceramic artificial stone in 1769 and appointed the sculptor John Bacon as its manager two years later. With proven durability of her product (other makers work was seen to disintegrate within a few frosts) she was soon employed by a large number of the leading late 18th century architects. From about 1777 she began her engraved designs, which were published in 1784 in a catalogue of over 700 items entitled "A Descriptive Catalogue of Coade's Artificial Stone Manufactory". The design for this rare pair of figures feature twice- firstly as numbers 4 and 5- a Vestal and "Sybil" and subsequently and with the addition of candle branches as "Statues to hold Light" and depicted in the 1784 catalogue as numbers 34 and 35, £16.6.0 each. By the time of the 1799 publication "Coade's Gallery, or, Exhibition in artificial stone" the descriptions were expanded to reflect the growing taste for Neoclassicism. Where possible the sculptor's names were indicated and the Sybil is referred to as being inspired or derived from the one "in the Barbarini collection" (Mrs Coade's spelling). These two figures were among the successful designs of the Lambeth artificial stone manufacture and similar pairs of figures (with and without candle branches) adorn both interiors and exterior settings such as the main gate posts of Malvern Hall, Solihull. Condition Report: As is not uncommon with these type of Coade figures these have both been restored- predominately to bases- one to neck, toes and raised details, urn etc - with scattered other spot fills and repairs. The repairs are largely skilled professional with tinted wash to accord with colourway and obscure repairs. Under UV the wash hides most of the remedial work- some signs of a prior painted surface visible to crevices and recesses. There are also indications of other perhaps less skilled repairs- notably to reverse of one figure's gown area. The branches are later, chips and losses to base edges. Figure with left arm up has crack to crook of arm. Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request. However, all lots are of an age and type which means that they may not be in perfect condition and should be viewed by prospective bidders; please refer to Condition 6 of the Conditions of Business for Buyers.
