London: Jarrold & Sons, [1883-84]. First & Second Series, folio (388 x 286mm). 48 fine photogravure plates printed on "plain paper" by T. & R. Annan after George Christopher Davies, with very small printed captions pasted onto the lower left corners of each, the image size 110 x 148mm (some spotting to 4 plates in the Second Series ("Barton Staithe", "Fritton Lake", "Wildfowl Decoy at Fritton. BUTTERFLIES, Indian - An album of original watercolours of Indian butterflies and moths mounted on paper, the images 130 x 95mm., inset into 38 thick card mounts, one on each side (some staining), 1868 and later, collected by Julius Barras.BUTTERFLIES, Indian - An album of original watercolours of Indian butterflies and moths mounted on paper with watercolour backgrounds of flora, the images 130 x 95mm., each inset into 38 thick card mounts, one on each side (some spotting and staining), hinged throughout, inserted into a 4to (285 x 250mm) black morocco album, red edges, the watercolours dated 1868 and later, the spine of the album dated (erroneously) 1867 (see note). Each watercolour is captioned with the place and year that the butterfly was caught, the majority being found in "Mehidpore"[sic] (India) in 1868. The butterflies were collected by Julius Barras, of whom little is known except that he published a book called "India and Tiger Hunting" in London in 1885 and a (very rare) collection of Anglo-Indian stories under the title "Under Two Shillings" published in London c.1888. The front of the album has an extensive note by Barras: "These butterflies and flowers are my first efforts as taught me by Colonel G. R. S. Burrows [i.e. almost certainly Brigadier General George Reynolds Scott Burrows (1827-1917)]. After keeping them upwards of twenty years I thought them worth preserving on the chance of their proving indestructible and thus becoming valuable some day as other as[sic] 'antiques'. I am particular that the flowers should be ascribed to the right artists because mine are so very bad. Consequently all those done by anybody else are marked. The butterflies and moths were all preserved by me, Julius Barras, at the times specified. Where they appear faded, it may be that friction is to blame? If you were to rub Rembrandt's pictures with your finger for years and years they would soon appear to look bad. I should not now think of transferring butterflies on common note paper like these. It cockles so. Nearly all these insects are common at all our Indian stations. The date on the back of this book [i.e. album] ought to be 1868. E. P. on some of the flowers stands for [?]Elta Palmer, 53 Lowndes Square. These Butterflies were all done at the time they were caught ..."

EMERSON, Peter Henry (1856-1936). Wild Life on a Tidal Water, London, 1890, 4to, 30 photogravure plates, folding chart, original buckram gilt (spine and corners rubbed). FIRST EDITION. NUMBER 21 OF 500 COPIES. RARE. With 3 medals awarded to Emerson. (4)EMERSON, Peter Henry (1856-1936, photographer).  Wild Life on a Tidal Water. The Adventures of a House-Boat and her Crew ... Illustrated with Thirty Photo-Etchings by P. H. Emerson and T. F. Goodall ... Together with an Appendix "Breydon Past and Present". London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, Limited, 1890. 4to (232 x 255mm). Half title, title printed in red and black, 30 fine photogravure plates by Peter Henry Emerson, including one after a painting by Thomas Frederick Goodall, folding "Plan of Breydon from Yarmouth Bridge to the Junction of the Yare at Waveney" at the end (very faint spotting and staining to text, some plates very lightly and consistently browned [or possibly printed on a different paper stock], a few plates with very light spotting and staining, but the majority unblemished, one tissue guard torn without loss). Original roan-backed pictorial blue buckram lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut, brown endpapers (spine and corners rubbed). Provenance: R. C. Fiske, Morningthorpe (ex-libris label); from the Collection of the late John Anthony Benjafield (1938-2023). FIRST EDITION of this work by the pioneer of "naturalistic photography". NUMBER 21 OF 500 COPIES OF THE "ORDINARY EDITION." RARE. Emerson believed that photography was less a mechanical process concerned with representing the world in forensic detail and more an art form, and that a photograph should reproduce as faithfully as possible what the eye actually saw, just as the Impressionists did with painting. This then radical approach did not always find favour with the photographic establishment who saw Emerson as something of a renegade. Although the wording of the title page of the present work may suggest that it was an equal collaboration between Emerson and Goodall, most of the input was Emerson's since he provided both the photogravures and the text. As the opening of his preface states, "This simple record of my impressions and experiences, whilst living with my friend, T. F. Goodall, on his house-boat on Breydon Water in Norfolk, may prove interesting to the public who have so kindly welcomed my previous productions. The plates illustrating this book were taken during this sojourn on that great tidal water in the summer of 1887. They form a series of separate chapters which will help to give the reader an idea of the wild life on Breydon and in Great Yarmouth, the old fishing town on its shore. The photo-etchings must speak for themselves; I have thought it unnecessary to write anything concerning them. The photo-etching, The Last of the Ebb, is from Goodall's large painting of Great Yarmouth from Breydon: his opus magnum during our sojourn there. It was exhibited in the Royal Academy of 1888, and will be known to some of my readers. The remaining plates are photo-etchings from photographic plates, all taken by me." Thereafter, the tone changes and displays some of the author's characteristic cantankerousness as he bemoans "... the ruinous manner in which some of my plates were printed in a previous publication." A pencil note on the front free endpaper, probably in the hand of John Benjafield, states: "This [book] rarely has its original spine and has not been rebacked. It is one of the rare copies to do so." Kahan & Colson Peter Henry Emerson (1972) pp.80-81; Newhall P. H. Emerson. The Fight for Photography as a Fine Art (1978) pp.50-53. See also Peter Turner & Richard Wood's P. H. Emerson. Photographer of Norfolk (1974) and John Taylor's The Old Order and The New. P. H. Emerson and Photography 1885-1895 (2007), the latter published to accompany the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television's exhibition of the same name. Included in the lot are 3 medals awarded to P. H. Emerson for photography: 1) [Obverse:] "'Amateur Photographer'. Prize Tour 1886. P. H. Emerson. B.A. M.B. Prize Medal" [Reverse:] "Presented by the 'Amateur Photographer'. Daguerre. Woodbury. Abney. Fox Talbot." 2) [Obverse:] "P. H. Emerson. For Instantaneous Photography" [with a view of Crystal Palace] [Reverse:] "Exposiçao Internacional de Photographia No Palacio de Crystal. Porto 1886 [with 3 allegorical figures] and 3) [Obverse:] "Amateur Photographic Exhibition. Awarded by the London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company (Limited) to P. H. Emerson M.B." [Reverse:] [3 putti in a photographic studio.] (4)

Original red cloth-backed coloured pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers printed in yellow and red (edges rubbed, without the dust-jacket). Provenance: "To David K. Spradling II from Florence Walker Clifton, Xmas 1943" (inscription on front free endpaper, with remnants of a Christmas sticker beneath). FIRST EDITION of the author's first children's book. His name is given as "Flight Lieutenant Roald Dahl" and a printed note on the verso of the title states: "The R. A. F. Benevolent Fund will receive the author's share of the proceeds from the sale of this book." The illustrator of the book is not identified, either with a credit or signature, but they probably worked for Walt Disney studios, the illustrations undeniably having a 'cartoonish' appearance. The Disney film which was to be based on the book never materialised, and the film "Gremlins" produced by Warner Bros. in 1984 owed little to it apart from the character of its mischievously destructive creatures. With the same author's James and the Giant Peach (New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 1961, 4to, illustrations by Nancy Ekholm Burkert, original orange cloth, dust-jacket, torn and frayed at corners, FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of the author's second children's book). (2)

With two inscriptions ([?]to Philby) signed "B."WITTGENSTEIN, Ludwig (1889-1951).  Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus ... With an Introduction by Bertrand Russell, F.R.S. London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & So., Ltd, 1947. 8vo (223 x 133mm). Half title, parallel text in German and English, 8-pages of publisher's advertisements at the end (one leaf [pp.163/164] creased. Original dark blue buckram, the spine lettered in gilt (small white stain to the lower cover, without the dust-jacket). First published as part of the series "International Library of Psychology, Philosophy and Scientific Method" in 1922, this a third impression. Considered Wittgenstein's magnum opus, the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus was his only book-length work published during his lifetime. Provenance: H. A. R. PHILBY (label, i.e. Harold Adrian Russell Philby (1912-88, Intelligence officer and spy, better known as "Kim" Philby). The front free endpaper is inscribed in an unidentified hand, signing him or herself only with the initial "B": "March 1948. You have quoted this to me so often (p.189), that I thought it might be good for you to go so far as to read the book. Dear. B. 1948. P.S. What he says is true, in the deepest sense, but makes life impossible, in the deepest sense. P.P.S. How deep is your sense? B." On p.189 the same writer has bracketed proposition 6.54 and added the word, "Mercy!", and then underlined the final proposition, presumably the one referred to in the main inscription and arguably Wittgenstein's most famous epigram ("Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent"), and added beneath it, "Which Brindle thinks is terribly old-fashioned, Christian, & dull, & somehow rather vulgar, too. B." The book was probably a gift to Philby from the elusive "B". At the time of its inscription, Philby was working as head of British Intelligence in Istanbul, while possibly finding time to involve himself with other, unaffiliated, organisations, also involved in espionage.

Subsequently he saw active service in the principal naval engagements and operations in the Black Sea which included the bombardment of Sebastopol and the capture of Kertch for which he received the Crimean and Turkish medals and the Sebastopol clasp. He was promoted staff surgeon on 2 December 1855 and posted as an additional medical officer to the flagship of the Commander-in-chief of the Mediterranean station, and in this rank was appointed to HM screw sloop Cormorant under the command of Thomas Saumarez which in May 1858 took part in the capture of the Peiho forts which allowed passage for Lord Elgin to proceed up-river to sign the Tien-tain Treaty. The following year (1859) this treaty required ratification, but the Chinese refused passage to the envoy (Sir Frederick Bruce KCB), and when a flotilla, including Cormorant tried to force a passage, it was repulsed. Cormorant and two other vessels were sunk, and Watson was among those wounded. For his skill and courage during the action, Watson was awarded the China medal and Taku clasp, and after recovering from his own wounds he was put in charge of the seriously wounded on their return to England" (The Dictionary of Ulster Biography).
