Lot 577

An unusual pair of Great War Medals with each medal named to the same recipient but in different Regiments. British War Medal, “26887 PTE. W.J. GODDARD NORF. R.”, Victory Medal, “54271 PTE W.J. GODDARD R. BERKS. R.”, medals contained in original named carboard box of issue. Walter Goddard was a resident of Alburgh, Norfolk and he served in the 2nd Battalion Norfolk Regiment and the 7th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment with the service numbers shown on these medals. It is unusual to see a pair of medals to the same recipient where each medal is named to a different unit, but this is confirmed on Goddard’s medal index card and on the relevant medal rolls, an interesting anomaly.

Lot 91

A Great War pair of medals the 12th Battalion London Regiment (The Rangers) who may have enhanced his age in order to enlist. British War and Victory Medals, “6457 PTE. G.J. WYE 12-LOND R.”, some Verdigris on the Victory Medal, with metal identity bracelet named to “GJ WYE C.E. 12 LOND 472953”. George James Richard Wye, a resident of Deptford, London attested for 12th London Regiment on 11th October 1916 giving his age as 20 years and 5 months. He served in France from 5th February 1917 until 13th August 1918 when he returned to the UK having been wounded by a GSW to the left leg 4 days earlier. There are some discrepancies with his age on the various records: on the 1911 census he was 12 years old; when he enlisted in 1916 he gave his age as 20, yet on the 1921 census he was 23; and when he died in April 1969 he was 69 years old. It does look as if he may have inflated his age by a couple of years to be able to enlist.
