British Isles. Lafreri (Antonio, school of), Britannia Insula quae duo Regna Continet Angliam et Scotiam cum Hibernia Adiacente, Rome, circa 1556, uncoloured engraved map (usually credited to Claudi Duchetti) the title in block text to the upper left, the map is based on George Lily's earlier map of 1546, two blocks of descriptive text, right-hand vertical margin trimmed with loss to the printed margin, skillfully replaced in facsimile, the horizontal margins trimmed to the neat line with the 'Septentrio' and 'Meridies' cardinals excised from the margins and tipped on to the map, 485 x 350 mm QTY: (1)NOTE:R. V. Tooley. Early Printed Maps of the British Isles, number 60a. The second state of this map with 'Mare Hisranicum' corrected to 'Mare Hispanicum'. Rare.Ashley Baynton Williams: The reason that Lafreri's name is now used as an umbrella term for the school is because he issued a catalogue of his stock in 1572, entitled 'Indice Delle Tavole Moderne Di Geografia Della Maggior Parte Del Mondo ...'. This catalogue is very similar, both in title and contents, to bound collections of maps with an engraved title Tavole Moderne Di Geografia De La Maggior Parte Del Mondo Di Diversi Autori. Accordingly bound collections with the engraved title were attributed to Lafreri, and thence his name became associated with the group as a whole. Some writers have attributed the title to Duchetti, but there seems no good reason to challenge Lafreri's role.

Richard Dodd Widdas, British 1826-1885- The Highwaymen; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'R. D. Widdas / 1884.' (lower right), 40 x 64.2 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Sotheby's, Chester, 15 January 1987, lot 3215. Private Collection, UK. Note: Widdas lived and worked in Hull, which surely inspired his maritime scenes, some of which are held at the Hull Maritime Museum and Ferens Art Gallery. Nevertheless, Widdas's preferred subject was undoubtedly that of coaching scenes, allowing him to exhibit his skill in the depiction of horses in various states of motion. The present work is a particularly dramatic example of the subject, illustrating the danger of travelling by coach under the threat of the highwayman, a figure which has long been romanticised and almost mythologised. Indeed, Widdas's scene places the bandits as the central figures in the action, establishing an affinity and sympathy between the highwaymen and the viewer, whilst their victims form an indistinct and undefined mass towards the background.
After Sir Peter Lely, English / Dutch 1618-1680- Portrait of Eleanora Lee, Lady Norreys, later Countess of Abingdon (1658-1691), half-length, in a feigned oval; oil on canvas, bears old label inscribed 'ELEANORA LEE / Countess of Abingdon / 1655-1691 / Attributed to Lely' attached to the reverse of the frame, 64.9 x 54.9 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: A larger full-length version attributed to Lely's Studio was once in the Collection of the Earl of Abingdon (1836-1928) and is reproduced in R. B. Beckett, 'English Master Painters: Lely', London 1951, pp.24-25, and under I. Portraits, no.2, plate 122. The same painting was offered at Sotheby's, London, 29 April 2014, lot 143. Eleanora Lee was the daughter of Sir Henry Lee, 3rd Bt and Ann Danvers. She married James Bertie, 1st Earl of Abingdon, son of Montagu Bertie, 2nd Earl of Lindsey, and Bridget Wray, Baroness Norris, on 1 February 1671/72 at Adderbury, Oxfordshire, England.
John Rathbone, British c.1750-1807- A Cottage in Patterdale Westmoreland; oil on canvas, 49 x 65.5 cm. Provenance: with R & A Ackermann's Gallery of Fine Arts, London. Private Collection, UK. Note: Versions of the present work exist by Phillippe Jacques de Loutherbourg (1740-1812) and Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1759-1817). Rathbone's works exhibit similarities to those of his contemporary George Morland (1763-1804), and indeed he collaborated on a number of occasions with Morland and Ibbetson, with these two artists sometimes painting the figures in his landscapes. In the present work, Rathbone presents a heavily romanticised depiction of rural simplicity, with rustic figures conversing and livestock roaming freely by an unassuming cottage. Between 1785 and 1806 Rathbone exhibited 48 landscapes at the Royal Academy and two at the Society of Artists.
Raoul Arus, French 1848-1921- A French soldier with his horse drinking from a puddle; oil on panel, signed 'R. Arus' (lower left), 21.7 x 27 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Arus's paintings almost exclusively depict figures in 19th-century military dress, either in battle or on the march, with his works typically presenting cavalry officers either mounted on or accompanied by their horses. The present work places a particular emphasis on the close relationship between a soldier and his horse, with the central figure looking on with care and concern as his horse pauses to drink some water on their journey.
Richard Henry Wright, British 1857-1930- A view of the Palace of Westminster across the Thames; watercolour on paper, bears inscription 'R H Wright' (on the backing paper), 18.2 x 27.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: This hazy, atmospheric composition is typical of Wright's oeuvre, which consisted almost exclusively of historic British cities and landscapes across Europe. The eerie quality of the present work is reinforced by the seemingly empty boats in the foreground, positioned beneath the dark clouds which loom above.
