Full title: Francesco Binfare (1939): 'On the Rocks' sofa for Edra, 2004Description: H 72 - L 363 - D 188 cm (dimensions based on the current set-up) The structure in poplar plywood. Feet in ABS and PTU. Padding in polyurethane foam and Gellyfoam®. Undercover in polyamide. Cover partially in Lycra. Removable cover. Francesco Binfare (r.1939 in Milan, Italy) achieved his artistic education under his father's direction and started working for Cassina in 1960. At first as a researcher for new technologies, then as Cesare Cassina's assistant for both new projects and the realization of prototypes. From 1969 to 1976 he was the director of the Centro Cassina and participated in the creation of several 20th C. design icons including Gateano Pesce's Up Series (1969) and Paolo Deganello's AEO chair (1973). He helped bring to fruition several other seminal Cassina projects - Toshiyuki Kita's Wink (1980), Getano Pesce's Tramonto a New York (1980) and Feltri (1987), and Paolo Deganello's Torso (1982). In 1992, Binfare was invited by Massimo Morozzi to design for Edra. His early work for Edra included L'Homme et la Femme (1993), Tangeri (1994) and Angels (1996) for Edra. In the 21st century, Binfare has created a number of new seating icons - On the Rocks (2004), Flap (2006), Absolu (2015), and Essential (2016). Interior photos by Kato Peeters.
Full title: A gilt silver mounted meerschaum pipe with the 'Prince of Wales' feathers' and one with symbols of the French revolution, 19th C.Description: L 20,5 - 10,7 cm The mounts of the largest pipe marked with the lion (standard mark), the date letter 'R'. The city mark and the maker's mark rather difficult to identify. Besides the 'Prince of Wales's feathers' also the motto 'Ich Dien' part of the decoration.

A GEORGE III MAHOGANY CELLARETIN THE MANNER OF THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, CIRCA 1780The hinged top opening to a divided interior71cm high, 39cm wide, 39cm deep Condition Report: There are marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions consistent with age and use.Some cracks within the grain of the flame figured mahogany; some undulations to the top and a patch to one corner.The handle is probably later as there is a groove mark wider than the handle. A SET OF THREE ANGLO-IRISH PORTRAITS OF THE FALKINER FAMILY REVERSE PAINTED ON GLASSVARIOUSLY DATED 1724 Portrait of girl in red jacket inscribed to reverse in ink "This picture was drawn by Mary Falkiner for me in ye year 1724 and was life like- R Card", 25 x 30cm overall; another of another girl (presumably her sister) inscribed to reverse "Mary Card", 37.5 x 25.5cm overall; and another the largest inscribed in the same hand; "Richard Falkiner Esq, that built Mnt Falkin house in 1720, this picture was drawn for him in 1724 and for his *** sister and his half sister Ruth Falkiner ** Mary Kean, Charlotte Bayly" 43.5 x 32.5cm overall (3)Research has found mention of Richard Falkiner (1691-1733), a Justice of the Peace, who lived in County Tipperary. He is recorded as having one child, a daughter Charlotte who married Constanine Bayly in 1748 and is, presumably, the person who penned the inscriptions to the reverse of these three portraits. "Mount Falkin" house, or as it's known today "Mount Falcon", still stands and carries on its pediment the inscription "RFM 1720".Condition Report: Painting of lady in blue:Some areas of paint have slightly detached from the glass giving a mottled opaque almost silvery grey appearance.There are some minor scratches and marks to the glass.The giltwood frame has sections of gesso that have dried and chipped off, with cracks and variously bright and matt gilding. The pine backboards split, with some paper tape missing and peeling.Painting of lady in red:Some areas of paint have slightly detached from the glass giving a mottled opaque almost silvery grey appearance. There is also flaking/scratching of the paint where the paint is missing, most noticeably to the right arm, forehead and face, and to the dress where the the red paint also has a crystalline almost iridescent quality when viewed in certain angles.The giltwood frame has sections of gesso that have dried and chipped off, with cracks and variously bright and matt gilding. There is a split to the pine backboard, with later brown paper glued as tape.Painting of the gentleman:Some areas of paint have slightly detached from the glass showing the brushstrokes in an opaque almost silvery grey appearance. Some paint loss to the hand.The glass has a subtle bevelled edge. One air bubble.The giltwood frame has sections of gesso that have dried and chipped off. Some tears to the paper tape on the backboard. All that said, the pictures have an authentic and un-touched look, and some of these comments on condition are only apparent on close inspection.Please see additional images for a visual reference of condition.Condition Report Disclaimer
HMS Cornwall Interest:- A Second World War Group of Five Medals, awarded to Electrical Lieutenant Norman Richard Rice R.N.V.R., comprising 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Burma Star with PACIFIC clasp, Defence and War Medals, swing mounted as worn, together with the medal slip and the miniatures, also, a photograph of the recipient in uniform, a programme for the Launch of HMS Cornwall by Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales on 14th October 1985 and photographs of the Princess at Yarrow Shipbuilders Ltd, Glasgow, an H.M.S. Commissioning Book of 1988, with black leather cloth binding, related ephemera including two VIP invitations for the commissioning (attended by the Sponsor, H.R.H The Princess of Wales) to Norman R Rice - the President of the HMS Cornwall 1939-42 Association, and his wife, with his lapel badge, personal photographs and slides, and newspaper cuttings of the event, his Hornby Railways Company Writing Pad, a die cast model of HMS Cornwall and a framed dedication for a 1981 reunion of the surviving crew of the German Auxiliary Cruiser H-K Pinguin which had been sunk by HMS Cornwall on 8th May 1941 Footnote:- Father of the vendor, Norman Richard Rice was serving with the Eastern Fleet on board HMS Cornwall when it was sunk by Japanese aircraft off Ceylon on 5th April 1942, an account of which is included in this lot. Norman and the other survivors were rescued on 6th April at 1800 hours by H.M.Ships Enterprise, Paladin and Panther.

A George V Royal Artillery Officer's Sword, the 89cm single edge fullered steel blade etched with coat of arms and Royal Artillery badge, by J R Gaunt & Son Ltd., late Edward Thurkill, London & Birmingham, with Proved poincon, the steel three bar hilt with wire bound fishskin grip and with leather service scabbard and frog, 106.5cm. Some black patching and pitting to blade and hilt. Damage to the chape of the scabbard.
A 19th Century Beaumont-Adams 54 Bore Double Action Percussion Five Shot Revolver, retailed by E M Reilly & Co. 315, Oxford Street, London, with blued finish, the 14.5cm octagonal barrel with London proof marks, the left side set with Kerr's patent rammer, the right side of the frame engraved with cursive initials W.H.A., and engraved B.20264/ADAMS' PATENT No.36013 R, with slide safety, the cylinder engraved 36013/R and with London proof marks, with chequered walnut grip, 29.5cm, in original oak case, the inner lid set with retailer's paper label, the green baized lined interior fitted with accessories including brass and steel bullet mould, ebony cleaning rod, two pistol flasks, oil flasks etc . Action works, Rust pitting to barrel, spur hammer, trigger guard and part of the frame. Retains 50% of the original bluing. Has been neglected, but would clean up. Case with damage to one hinge, inner back corner and divide.
