[VICTORIA]: (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901. A rare collection of Queen Victoria’s intimate apparel, comprising a large white linen short sleeved Nightdress with a fine machine lace patterned border to the collar and sleeves, with embroidered Royal crown and initials VR; a cream linen Chemise, also with a machine lace patterned frill at the neckline and sleeves and with embroidered Royal crown, initials VR and size number 24 beneath; a pair of white linen Bloomers with embroidered Royal crown, initials VR and size number 36; a fine pair of black silk Stockings with white tips, and with embroidered Royal crown and the initials VR beneath; and a white lace pocket Handkerchief featuring two different attractive patterned borders and the Royal crown and initials VR embroidered in one corner. Accompanied by two autograph notes, unsigned (although most likely in the hand of Mrs. John Nicholas Price Wood, Lt. Col., wife of the High Sherriff of Shropshire in 1943), each on different correspondence cards from Henley Hall, Ludlow, n.d. (c.1936), the first stating, in full, ‘Underlinen & stockings worn by Her Majesty Queen Victoria’ and the second stating, in full, ‘This Pocket Handkerchief belonged to Her Majesty Queen Victoria & was given to Elma Wood by Her Highness Princess Helena Victoria, grand daughter of Queen Victoria’, (also included is a Registered envelope, evidently originally containing the handkerchief, hand addressed by Princess Helena Victoria to Mrs. Price Wood at Henley Hall, Ludlow, post marked 8th July 1936, and signed H.V. by the Princess with her initials in the lower left corner, some small tears and age wear), and further including a third autograph note, unsigned, in an unidentified hand, n.p., n.d., stating, in full, ‘Night Gown worn by her late Majesty Queen Victoria the year she died January 1901’. Some pinholes, evidently where the notes were originally attached to the garments. All of the clothing and notes of provenance are contained in a handsome red leather despatch box with the gilt stamped name of Sir Albert K. Rollit L.L.D. to the lid, the brass handle with a brown oblong 12mo luggage label tied to it, with the printed address of Mrs. Price Wood, Henley Hall, Ludlow, Salop, annotated in ink (presumably in the hand of Mrs. John Nicholas Price Wood once more) in part ‘This Box contains H.M. Victoria’s under clothes worn during the year of her death, Night dress, stockings, chemise….& drawers, Handkerchief. The Handkerchief was given me by H R Highness Princess Helena Victoria grand daughter of Queen Victoria’. A rare collection with good provenance. Some light age wear, generally VG, Sml Qty. The partially printed document approves the appointment made by the King of the Belgians for Mr. S. Rosenbaum to be a Consul at Singapore and allows Rosenbaum 'all the Privileges, Immunities and Advantages' belonging to his post. Countersigned at the foot by Edward Grey (1862-1933) 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon, British Statesman, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1905-16. With blind embossed seal at the head. Two file holes to the upper corners, some extensive dust staining and age wear and a few small holes to the folds, slightly affecting the text and signatures, FR Sigmund Rosenbaum (1874-1948) German-born Diplomat.

(London), 14th May 1712, with four lines of manuscript text transferring the sum of one thousand pounds to the Honourable Richard Hill with all interest. Countersigned by Hill and his witness at the foot, acknowledging receipt of the full amount. With several lines of printed text to the verso. Some light age wear and a few minor tears and small areas of paper loss to the edges and corners, not affecting the text or signatures, otherwise VG The payment was most likely made to The Rev. The Hon. Sir Richard Hill of Hawkstone (1655-1727) English Diplomat, Public Servant and Statesman who accumulated great wealth during his lifetime.
[PEEL ROBERT]: (1788-1850) British Prime Minister 1834-35 & 1841-46. LITTLETON EDWARD (1791-1863) 1st Baron Hatherton. British Politician, Chief Secretary for Ireland 1833-34. A.L.S., Hatherton, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to Robert Peel ('My dear Peel'). Littleton announces 'This is the Biscuit Medallion of Sir R. Walpole, which I mentioned to you' and continues 'It has been broken, & is of little value - I think it must have been done from a Wax Medallion by Dessier, who was a man who worked both in marble and wax about 80 years ago - & whose name I see at the bottom'. A letter of interesting association linking two British Prime Ministers. Very slight, minor traces of former mounting to the right edge of the verso, VG Sir Robert Walpole (1676-1745) British Prime Minister 1721-42. Britain's first Prime Minister who served one hundred years before Peel took office.

CHARD JOHN: (1847-1897) British Colonel, Victoria Cross winner for his actions during the defence of Rorke's Drift in Zululand, 22nd/23rd January 1879. Rare A.L.S., John R M Chard, one page, 8vo, Devonport, 17th February 1880, to George R. Brown. Chard writes, in full, 'I thank you for your kind letter and good wishes'. Neatly laid down and with some light age toning and minor chipping (causing a few small areas of paper loss) to the edges, not affecting the text or signature, G
LEE ROBERT E.: (1807-1870) American General, Commanded the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War from 1862 until his surrender in 1865. A good A.L.S., R E Lee, one page, 8vo, Arlington, 23rd May 1859, to Major P. V. Hagner (‘My dear Major’), incorporating a small original drawing. Lee states ‘I thought Housings had been adopted by the Board. I know I voted against it. If not adopted I do not wish any’. The General further gives his correspondent some instructions, ‘I will have the brass plates in the bit as you suggest [at this point in the letter Lee has penned a small drawing of a design he wishes to create] The 2 enveloped by the C, different from that of the men’ and remarks that the pouches must have covers in order to secure their contents, and that he wishes them to be light. With blank integral leaf (slight traces of former mounting). Some light uniform age toning, most likely caused by previous framing, about VG Peter V. Hagner (1815-1893) United States Army officer who served in the American Civil War. In the years before the war Hagner commanded several arsenals and was responsible for the maintenance and upkeep on weaponry and military stores. The present letter is written just months before Lee defeated the white abolitionist John Brown and his men at what is known as the Raid on Harpers Ferry (October 1859). It is considered by military historians to have been one of the monumental events leading up to the Civil War.
McCALL FREDERICK: (1896-1949) Canadian Fighter Ace of World War I credited with 35 victories. Fountain pen ink signature (‘F. R. McCall, Capt’) on an oblong 12mo piece neatly removed from a document, with several additional typed words including ‘Commanding No. 42 Squadron’ beneath his signature. Some light creasing to the lower left corner, VG
McELROY GEORGE: (1893-1918) Irish-born Fighter Ace of World War I credited with 47 victories. D.S., G E H McElroy, in pencil, one page, 4to, n.p., 8th July 1918. The partially printed document, completed in type, is a Combat Report (headed Combats in the Air) completed by McElroy following one of his confirmed victories east of La Bassee, the narrative stating, in part, ‘Attacked E.A. from above and behind firing about 120 rounds from 200 yards range silencing observer. Zoomed up and cleared gun stoppage and then got position 100 yards behind E.A. fired about 50 rounds, E.A. went down out of control in slow spins and crashed….’ Countersigned at the foot by Captain J. P. R. Napier, Commanding No. 40 Squadron RAF confirming the victory. Autographs of McElroy are extremely rare in any form as a result of his early death, when killed in action, at the young age of 25. URQUHART ROY: (1901-1988) British Military officer of World War II, commanded the 1st Airborne Division during Operation Market Garden. T.L.S., R E Urquhart, one page, 4to, Whitehall, 22nd January 1947, to Whom it may concern, on the blind embossed stationery of the War Office. Urquhart writes a letter of testimonial, in full, 'Major S. Gregory has been acting as my Personal Assistant for the last 6 months of my tenure as D.T.A. & A.C.F. He has a likeable personality and can be relied upon at all times to do his best. He has a cheerful manner and is a very willing worker. His long experience of the Army has given him a very valuable background, of which he makes full use'. Together with an A.L.S. by Major General Russell Gurney (1890-1947), one page, 4to, War Office, 17th June 1946, to Samuel Gregory, thanking him for his magnificent work and loyal support and also including a folio document granting the dignity of an Additional Member of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire to Gregory, 1st January 1941, bearing rubber stamped signatures of King George VI and Queen Mary. Further including Leslie Rundle (1856-1934) British General of World War I. A.L.S., Leslie Rundle, three pages, 4to, The Palace, Malta, 4th October 1914, to [Arthur Edward Tolfrey] Christie, stating, in part, 'You have been a great assistance to me in every way - I shall not be alive when you get to the top of the tree, but I believe and hope you will go far. In losing you I part with a good deal; but for the sake of the service & your own, I do not regret your going - though I do for my own....The local auditor is going to play the devil with this place & had much better go to Egypt where I am sure he is much more wanted. I fancy we save hundreds here where Egypt wastes thousands...' and also including a naval commission and document granting the dignity of an Additional Officer of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire to Lieutenant Commander Christie, bearing rubber stamped signatures of King George V, King George VI and Queen Mary. HESS RUDOLF: (1894-1987) German Reichsminister, Adolf Hitler's Deputy in the Nazi Party. T.L.S., R. Hess, one page, oblong 4to, Munich, 4th November 1933, to Hans Rabenberger, on the printed stationery of the National Socialist German Workers Party, in German. Hess states that he has not been able to visit his correspondent's exhibition until today, when he discovered in the exhibition prospectus that it had ended. He asks to be informed if Rabenberger stages another exhibition in the future. Two file holes to the left edge and a couple of small tears to the edges of two folds, not affecting the text or signature. Accompanied by a postcard photograph of Hess bearing a facsimile signature.
