A .44" Remington calibre Model 1875 revolver, Remington entered into a contract with an initial order for 10,000 specimens of this revolver with the Egyptian government, the Egyptian contract guns were inspected like U.S. military arm and carried a * mark on the left side of the barrel, forward of the frame and an R sub-inspectors mark on the cylinder and the frame between the cylinder and the barrel, this order was never completed when Egypt failed to pay for a previous order for Remington Rolling Block rifles so it ended prematurely and those made were apparently sold on the open market, as a result Egyptian contract marked revolvers are relatively scarce and command higher than normal prices, this specimen bears the * and R in the above defined positions; it bears the serial number 2813 under its grips, the calibre is defined as obsolete by the Home Office and benefits from being regarded as an antique under section 58 (2) of the Firearms Act 1968, it can therefore be purchased without a licence when kept as a curio or ornament; it comes with a modern gun belt
