AN EARLY GEORGE III SABICU PEMBROKE TABLE ATRRIBUTABLE TO HENRY HILL OF MARLBOROUGH, CIRCA 1760 The top and flaps with distinctive lozenge geometric veneering, frieze drawer and chamfered square legs with blind fret decoration, with paper label inside inscribed 'Pembroke Table Kensington Palace 1967' 72cm high, 90.5cm wide when open, 57.5cm deep overall Provenance: The Collection of H. R. H. The Princess Margaret (1930-2002), Kensington Palace Henry Hill is listed as cabinet-maker, auctioneer, coach-maker, and representative of the Sun Insurance Company active in Marlborough from about 1740 until his death in 1778. Most of Hill's known clients were landed Wiltshire families. A closely related oval Pembroke table at Corsham Court with 'lozenge' pattern top has been attributed by Lucy Wood to the cabinet-maker Henry Hill (L. Wood, Catalogue of Commodes, London, 1994, p. 68, fig. 49). For a Pembroke table with very similar parquetry top to this example please see Christie's London, Julians Park And Six Private Collections, 8th June 2021, lot 32 £ 5,625 (inc. buyer's premium). Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions consistent of age and useSigns of later remedial work to top with later underbracing. Filled rebates and holes to the chamfers in the tops of the legs. Suggesting that it was previously fitted with a fret carved enclosure. Most likely originated as a supper table. Some inevitable lifting to the veneer/parquetry on the tabletop. He was wounded and taken prisoner a few days later, being repatriated in September 1944

There are some faint brown spots in places. Under raking light creasing is visible and there are some small scattered spots and speckles where the surface appears matt. There is a crease which may be possibly be a repaired tear with a small pierced hole to the left edge, lower centre. In this area there is a little discolouration and the surface is matt unlike the rest of the work. In the top left corner there is a light scuff/ abrasion where the sheen of the pencil appears rubbed. A further small area of abrasion to the bottom of the right edge. Viewed out of the glazed frame there is a pinhole in the upper right corner. The work has been stuck down in the corners and it is not possible to see the reverse. Please refer to additional condition images.
