The obverse legend on the second medal is taken from the Emperor's speech at Guildhall on 10 July 1891: 'My aim is above all the maintenance of Peace . . . '

ANNUAL ASSAY COMMISSION, pound troy weight inscribed Bate of London, with three smaller weights, 57.5mm. ( JK.AC-112 [R7]), encased in Perspex holder, about mint state Albert Gallatin was Treasury Secretary 1801-1814. The weight depicted on the reverse was the standard for this weight, brought to the Mint in 1824. A label on the holder states: 'Only 36 of these minted. 28 were presented to the members of the annual panel of citizens, weighers, counters & assayers who checked the 4967 mint products. The other medals were presented to the Mint Bureau and other government officials.'

Kingdom of Iraq, King Faisal I (1921-1933), a Royal Mint trial in silver by Percy Metcalfe for the first coinage of Iraq, undated (c. 1931), obv. profile bust to r. depicting King Faisal in traditional Arabic dress, rev. blank with the word MODEL in centre, milled edge, wt. 11.28gms., diam. 29mm., matte surfaces, good extremely fine, exceedingly rare, possibly the only example in private hands. This trial was possibly intended (by size) as a silver 100 fils, a denomination not introduced during the reign of Faisal I. Two examples of this piece are known in the British Royal Mint Collection. Percy Metcalfe gained his reputation by winning the competition to design the first coinage of the Irish Free State in 1928. He became internationally renowned for designing the new effigies for King Fuad of Egypt in 1929 and King Farouq in 1938. Most famously he is known for the portrait of King George V, which was used on the obverse for coins of Australia, Canada, Fiji, Mauritius, New Zealand and Southern Rhodesia.

He finishes this letter with one of the most poignant phrases I think I've ever read: "One can only look back on the war as just an exceedingly stupid affair altogether & mankind appears to have learnt nothing from it, except how to kill people more easily".
