Aline R Ellis (1886-1971) A Sketchbook with studies of dogs, horses, deer and duck in pencil, pen and ink, A sketchbook with studies of figures, flowers and animals Various sketches and studies of dogs including terriers, poodles, corgis and labradors, horses, donkeys and other animals, some signed and inscribed, some watercolour, pencil, pen and ink, pastel, all on paper or card, various sizes (qty) Born in Bishop Auckland in 1886 Ellis lived much of her life in Hertfordshire having studied in Bushey at the art school run by renowned equine artist Lucy Kemp-Welch. She specialised in tin glazed earthenware pottery, particularly of dogs and equine subjects, completing her work from the coach house in her garden at Ebury Lodge, Kingsbury. She exhibited between 1933 to 1940 including The Royal Academy in 1940.

A rare 4 piece alloy Tea Set of the airship R.38. Comprising a teapot and a hot water jug, each with a wooden handle and knob to lid. The bases are marked ‘R.38’ and ‘U.S.N. property’. Together with a jug and sugar bowl with integral handles, all 4 items marked on the side ‘Airship /R.38/August 1921’. GC some service wear illustrated on Plate 8. Note: The R.38 class was designed for Britain’s Royal Navy towards the end of World War I . Designed for long-range patrol duties over the North Sea, four airships were ordered by the Admiralty. Three of them were cancelled after the armistice was signed with Germany. Work on the R.38 continued after the United States Navy had agreed to purchase her. In 1921 she was the world’s largest airship. On 23 August 1921, in preparation for a final trial flight and delivery to Lakehurst, R.38 (US registration ZR-2) was destroyed by a structural failure over the city of Hull and crashed into the River Humber killing 44 of the 49 crew.
A possibly unique period leather tankard from the British Airship R.101. Fitted with a pewter insert with rim engraved in capitals ‘Best Wishes From The Airship Crew’. With a leather outline airship marked ‘R.101’ with registration ‘G-FAAW’. Applied to a thick stitched hide outer cover incorporating a sturdy handle. The base is stamped ‘Made In England’. Height 12cm GC illustrated on Plate 8.
A scarce set of navigation instruments from the British airship R.24. Including 2 large and 2 small pairs of brass dividers, all bearing the broad arrow mark. Plus a brass mounted ebony parallel rule, etc. All in their folding canvas pouch, the flap marked `Airship R24 Ord Dep` and makers mark `BWC` in lozenge. GC (some service wear and rust to instruments), illustrated on Plate 11.
A constructional part of the framework of the R.101. Of flat duralumin numbered 30 with pattern of radiating holes. Suggesting that it was one of many running along the framework of the airship. With small inspectors mark `RAW 7`. Approximately 13cm diameter with an old label attached inscribed in ink, `A piece of the dirigible balloon burnt near Beauvais, No.101 October 1930`. GC illustrated on Plate 11. Note: The R.101 was built by the Royal Airship Works, hence the RAW inspectors mark.

A cross on wreath, a fractured airship and `In Memoriam` to front, list of Officers and men with details inside. Also another for R.101- `In sacred memory of the Officers, crew and passengers of the British airship R.101 which crashed in France on Sunday morning Oct 5th 1930`. A cross within blooms and `Thy Will be done` to front. Image of airship, details of flight inside, list of 48 passengers and crew who died on the back of the card. Both VGC for age, illustrated on Plate 13.
An interesting autograph book belonging to a Miss Clouting, one of the invited guests at a civic luncheon at the Town Hall Ipswich on 26 June 1930, on the occasion of the visit of H.R.H. The Prince Of Wales. The Prince was invited to attend the Wolsey Pageant and to open new Airport at Ipswich. Ipswich, along with Great Yarmouth, Sheringham and Kings Lynn suffered with bombing from Zeppelin LZ38 commanded by Erich Linnarz in 1915. This small book contains the future Kings autograph as Edward R, dated 26-V1-30. It also contains many other signatures of important people to the owner. Also the lot contains an invite to the luncheon and a table layout. GC illustrated on Plate 13.
A rare original passenger list for a flight on the Hindenburg. `Passengers Hindenburg- From Lakehurst, New Jersey, USA. To Frankfurt O.M., Germany, on the Airship June 23, 1936. On the inside facing page the following- `The Zeppelin Airship Hindenburg of the `Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederie` (German Transport Company). Eastbound crossing from Lakehurst, New Jersey to Frankfort on Main, Germany June 23 1936. Staff Dr. Hugo Eckener (commander), Watch Officers Capt. M. Pruss Capt. A. Sammt, Mr. H. Bauer. Chief Engineer Mr. R. Sauter. Radio Officer. Mr. W. Speck. Mail and Sanitary Officer Mr. K. Schonherr. Chef Steward Mr. H. Kubis. Chef Mr. X Maier. Inside is the list of 56 passengers, including Lord Donegall, Rear Admiral John W. Greenslade U.S.N. Professor Robert A. Mac Lean, Captain Schultz-Heyn, etc. Printed on cream card with black lettering. GC for age, some wear to edges, illustrated on Plate 15.
An important historical manual containing the specifications, construction and operating costs for the British Airships, R.100, & 101 and also for the Z.R.3. The booklet is stamped ‘Royal Airship Works Cardington 15 Nov 1926 DRAWING OFFICE.’ This detailed manual contains all aspects of the costs, quantities of parts for the design and build of the airships, also for the hangers and docking towers at Cardington. For example- The estimated cost to build the R.100 £300,000. R.101 £400,000. Plus a docking tower at Cardington £50,000, huge numbers by even today’s standards! GC some age wear overall. 2 souvenir copper plaques/small trays in memory of the R.101. A circular example, embossed and engraved with airship R.101 G/FAAW and mooring tower, with date 1930 and leaf border. Diameter 15cm. Plus another oval example marked `memory` and 1930, the details of the airship being particularly clear, 15cm x11cm. QGC-GC some wear/denting.
4 WW1 celluloid matchbox holders. Produced to commemorate the first Zeppelin to be shot down over England, by Lt. William Robinson V.C. 3 September 1916. Each with alternative portrait of Robinson, his RFC and regimental badge, Zeppelin caught by search lights, falling in flames and advertising panel with his name in detail. A similar matchbox holder recording German atrocities with a portrait of Nurse Edith Cavell, pictures of the SS Lusitania and Persia and Zeppelin bombing London with text ‘I ask you to make good these sacrifices’. 2 hand engraved alloy holders, one with ‘Zep L.48’, picture of the Zeppelin and two attacking bi-planes. And another with ‘GS R.100’. QGC-GC some wear/stains.
3 cast alloy ashtrays. Each with panels `Made From` and `R.38 1921` on the rims. One with `Hull Brewery Company` in the centre, another with `Constitutional Lodge 294` and the other plain. All marked `Tooley & Fenton Lincoln St Hull` on the base. All 14cm diameter. GC illustrated on Plate 21.

An interesting collection of 102 glass lantern slides. Mostly WW1 period photographic, showing various, mostly Naval, airships including N.S. (North Sea) types, S.S. (Sea Scout) types, Vickers R.9 and R.23, Parseval P.6 and Kite balloons, aerial views of airship bases in Anglesey, Luce Bay and East Fortune, Naval ships towing balloons, cable winding vehicle, R.N.A.S. signal section vehicle and results of an airship bombing a U-boat; also a number of painted coloured slides of historic balloons and airships. All contained in a wooden slide box, the lock dated 1917, complete with carrying handle. GC (The lock A.F.
Approximately 50 half-plate glass negatives relating to the R.101 disaster. Many showing the wreckage, but also some of the airship in flight, before leaving Cardington and of the victims` bodies being repatriated. Also 14 similar quarter plate negatives.
