B32c 50th Anniversary B 17 Signed 3 USA Pilots Le May, F Gailer,W E Hardy Personally signed General Curtis Emerson Le May United States Air Force He is credited with designing and implementing an effective, but also controversial, systematic strategic bombing campaign in the Pacific theatre of WW11. During the war, he was known for planning and executing a massive bombing campaign against cities in Japan and a crippling minelaying campaign in Japan's internal waterways. After the war, he unintentionally initiated the Berlin Airlift, then reorganized the Strategic Air Command (SAC) into an effective instrument of nuclear war. He served as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force from 1961 until his retirement in 1965. and by Air Commodore R Dick B17 Flying Fortress Pilot who flew the covers. Brigadier General Frank L Gailer Jr USAF In July 1944 he joined the 357th Fighter Group in England as a P-51 pilot. USA FDC Signed R K Sorenson CMH Medal of Honor holder US Marine Corps Reserve, 4th Marine Division CMH Congressional Medal of Honor Holder Place and Date Vicinity 1 - 2 February 1944 Namur Island, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands CITATION For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with an assault battalion attached to the 4th Marine Division during the battle of Namur Island, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands on 1-2 February 1944. Putting up a brave defence against a particularly violent counterattack by the enemy during invasion operations, Pvt. Sorenson and five other marines occupying a shell hole were endangered by a Japanese grenade thrown into their midst. Unhesitatingly, and with complete disregard for his own safety, Private Sorenson hurled himself upon the deadly weapon, heroically taking the full impact of the explosion. As a result of his gallant action, he was severely wounded, but the lives of his comrades were saved. His great personal valour and exceptional spirit of self-sacrifice in the face of almost certain death were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service. Details enclosed. Spuren alter MontierungenErläuterungenIm Frühjahr 1928 trat Walter Gropius aufgrund von Konflikten mit den städtischen Behörden als Direktor des Bauhauses in Dessau zurück. Als neuer Direktor wurde der Schweizer Architekt Hannes Meyer berufen. Seine Devise lautete "Volksbedarf statt Luxusbedarf", und er legte den Schwerpunkt des Unterrichts stärker auf die angewandten Künste. Das führte selbstredend zu Konflikten mit den freien Kunstklassen. Erschöpft und frustriert von den ständigen Querelen kam Paul Klee schliesslich dem schon 1930 erfolgten Ruf von Walter Kaesbach an die Kunstakademie Düsseldorf nach und begann seine Unterrichtstätigkeit im Wintersemester 1931 mit einem Kurs über Maltechnik. Seine neuen Kollegen am Rhein waren etwa Heinrich Campendonk oder Ewald Mataré.In Düsseldorf hatte Klee nur wenige Schüler, sodass er sich wieder verstärkt um eigene Schöpfungen kümmern konnte. Eine der grossen Neuerungen war sicherlich die Erprobung eines neu interpretierten Pointillismus. Warum sich Klee mit den aus einzelnen Pinselstrichen aufgebauten Bildkompositionen zu befassen begann, ist unklar. Das hier angebotene Werk stellt eine Art "missing link" dar auf dem Weg zu den bahnbrechenden späteren Werken im pointilistischen Stil, die kurz darauf entstehen sollten. Am Anfang wirkten die aneinandergereihten Pinselstriche noch eher grob. Klee war sich wohl unsicher, wie das pointillistische Element optimal eingesetzt werden könnte. Um den Stil zu verfeinern, griff er, was naheliegend war, auf eigene Werke zurück, die er im neuen Stil interpretierte. Das wichtige Ölgemälde "Abfahrt der Schiffe" aus dem Jahr 1927 (Catalogue raisonne 4353), das in Klees wichtiger Einzelausstellung im Museum of Modern Art in New York 1930 ausgestellt war, und das der Künstler bis zum Tod behalten hatte, diente ihm als Vorlage für seine pointillistischen Experimente. Es entstanden so in kurzer Folge besonders grossformatige Aquarelle: zuerst in sehr freier Interpretation "Dampfer und Segelboote" (Catalogue raisonne 5588), heute in der National Gallery in Washington, dann das nahe am Ölbild aber seitenverkehrt wiedergegebene "Dampfer u. Segelboote, gegen Abend" (Catalogue raisonne 5601), heute in einer bedeutenden Privatsammlung, sowie das hier angebotene Blatt, das dem Gemälde am nächsten kommt. Eindrücklich sieht man die Evolution und wachsende Meisterschaft. Ein Jahr später wird er die seitenverkehrte Version in voller Perfektion als grossformatiges Ölgemälde "Schiffe Abends" umsetzen (Catalogue raisonne 5717).Nur durch die Fingerübungen in Aquarell wurden Werke wie das im Folgejahr entstehende, monumentale Ölgemälde "Ad Parnassum" (Catalogue raisonne 5970), das sich heute im Kunstmuseum Bern befindet, überhaupt möglich.
