Cesar Legaspi (Filipino, 1917-1994) and Hernando R. "HR" Ocampo (Filipino, 1911-1978). Oil on board painting from the "Interaction" series, 1972. Depicting interlocking forms in muted reds and blues that are iconic of Ocampo's "visual melody" period. The highly textured painting shows the signature look of Ocampo's paintings, who meticulously applied paint to his canvases with a small palette knife in methodical, small increments, changing from shade to shade with patience and care. Signed by both artists and dated by Legaspi along the lower right. With a label from the Cultural Center of the Philippines affixed along the verso.Exhibition: Cultural Center of the Philippines, "Interaction 1973," May 25 - June 24, 1973.Lot Essay:Both Legaspi and Ocampo were a part of the influential group known as the "Thirteen Moderns" who ushered in a modern style of painting to the Philippines. The group included Botong Francisco, Galo Ocampo, Lorenzo, Vicente Manansala, HR Ocampo, Anita Magasaysay-Ho, Cesar Legaspi, Demetrio Diego, Ricarte Purugganan, Jose Pardo, Bonifacio Cristobal and Arsenio Capili. This group interacted with each other often, collaborating to produce greater and greater works of art.Cesar Legaspi was a Filipino National Artist in painting. His early works often depicted cubist figures often described as showing the anguish and dehumanizing of the beggars and laborers in the city. In his early works he worked to refine Cubism and place it within a distinctly Filipino context, utilizing it to show the struggles his country faced in the wake of World War II. His focus on the human condition never faded even as he moved to a brighter palette and more abstract, geometric forms. He studied at the University of the Philippines and under the tutelage of Pablo C. Amorsolo before exhibiting his works at the Manila Hotel with other neo-realists in 1950. He held his first one-man show in 1963 at the Luz Gallery after studying for several years in Madrid and Paris. Until 1968 he split his time between working in advertising and painting before finally devoting his career to his artistic endeavors. He eventually became the head of the Saturday Group of Artists from 1978 until his death in 1994.Together with Legaspi and Vicente Manansala, Hernando Ruiz Ocampo (better known as HR Ocampo) was one of the three most significant figures who brought neo-realism to the Philippines. Ocampo was a self-taught artist whose works were noted for their unity and coherence throughout his career. As he shifted from neo-realism to abstract works in the 1960s, he began using more vivid paints and his paintings were sometimes likened to paint-by-number artworks. His works are self-defined by five distinct periods: the Amorsolo period from 1929-1934, the proletarian period from 1934-1945; the transitional period from 1945-1963; the mutants period from 1963-1968; and the visual melody period from 1968-1978.In addition to his inventive paintings, he was also a writer, playwright, and editor. He combined his love of art and writing for the creation of the monumental "Genesis" curtains in the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo. In his signature undulating forms of red, orange, and yellow, these curtains define his style and personality.Sight; height: 23 1/2 in x width: 17 1/2 in. ROUGET DE LISLE CLAUDE: (1760-1836) French Officer of the French Revolutionary wars. Best known for being the creator of the words and music of the "Chant de Guerre pour l´armée du Rhin" ("War Song for the army of the Rhin") in 1792, and which would become later the French National anthem La Marseillaise. A good A.L.S., `R. de Lisle´, one page, 8vo, n.p., [Paris], Wednesday 25th November 1823, to Monsieur de Montrol, in French. De Lisle kindly thanks his correspondent for his invitation, but rejects it, stating `Mille remerciements de votre obligeante invitation. Mais nous demeurons si loin l´un de l´autre! Les soirées commencent et se prolongent si tard....´ ("Many thanks for your kind invitation. But we live so far apart! The evenings start and continue so late...."), and further explains in detail the reasons, stating in part `... et puis, je ne me porte pas bien; j´ai du chagrin, et de plus d´une manière. En somme je ne suis plus qu´une vieille patraque qui se détraque pour parler en rimeur, et comme tel, très peu propre à figurer dans vos joyeuses réunions´ ("... and also, I'm not well; I grieve, and in more than one way. ANNE: (1665-1714) Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland 1702-07. A fine L.S., Anna R, with a holograph subscription, three pages, folio, Palace at Windsor, 3rd July 1709, to Franz Ludwig, Count Palatine, Bishop of Worms, and Johann Wilhelm, Count Palatine on the Rhine, Elector of Bavaria, in Latin. The Queen writes, in part, 'Most illustrious and excellent Prince, dearest cousin and friend, as well as most serene Prince, dearest brother, cousin, and friend, the new peace negotiation by the French, which is too little sincere, has no doubt already been made known [and] it would be superfluous to explain to Your Excellency and Your Electoral Excellency with how much unworthiness the most Christian King not only refused to have several preliminary articles concluded in The Hague confirmed, & after their having been approved by his plenipotentiaries, but also in contempt of all his allies, he has abused [them] through insinuations he has thought up to enrage the spirits of his subjects. We hope indeed that the long since renowned skills will remove the anger from all hearts and that the allies will all be of the same mind as We that there will in no way at all be a just, honest, stable, comprehensive peace until the arrogant common enemy, who has out of weakness so violently brought on war from all sides, withdraws, that he must by necessity or unwillingly desist. These things may already speak for themselves. We nonetheless, from Our concern for the public weal, deemed it to be not unseemly to appeal with Our exhortation to Your Excellency and Your Electoral Excellency to urge and cause everyone of authority in the region of the Upper Rhine by most grave admonishments to support it, as well as to provide a share of fighting forces, of soldiers and funds, and also at this moment, by which the moments of the greatest causes turn to Our example and that of the order of the general domains of the Belgian Federation, to send men and funds & thus expand the German combat army on the Upper Rhine and fortify it by means of the things needed for war, so that not only the boundaries of the Empire are protected, but also the provinces broken off at the time can be reintegrated. This sole hope of a war to be completed with glory and a peace to be maintained with security. To this be added the hope for divine grace, which will not be rejected as unseemly, health, liberty, and event the indignation at such an enemy. We thus humbly appeal to Your Excellency and Your Electoral Excellency to take active part in the cause, for haste is necessary so that this best occasion not slip from our hands…..' Countersigned at the foot by Henry Boyle (1669-1725) 1st Baron Carleton, Anglo-Irish politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer 1701-08, Northern Secretary 1708-10 and Lord President of the Council 1721-25. With integral address panel bearing a blind embossed paper seal (neatly split). Annotated in ink at the head of the first page to record that the letter was received at Erfurt on 29th July 1709. A letter of interesting content and association written during the Spanish War of Succession (1701-14), the European great power conflict which arose from the death of the childless King Charles II of Spain in November 1700 and led to a struggle for control of the Spanish Empire between his heirs, Philip of Anjou and Charles of Austria, and their respective supporters, among them Spain, Austria, France, the Dutch Republic, Savoy and Great Britain. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Franz Ludwig of Palatinate-Neuburg (1664-1732) Prince-Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, Prince-Bishop of Worms 1694-1732. Johann Wilhem II (1658-1716) Elector Palatine 1690-1716, brother of Franz Ludwig.

CHARLES II: (1630-1685) King of England, Scotland & Ireland 1660-85. A.L.S., Charles R, two pages, 8vo, Brussels, 18th March 1660, to an unidentified correspondent. The King writes, in full, 'This bearer hath informed me of the greate affection and zeale you have for my Service, and of the opportunity and interest you have to advance it; which I doute not you will use with all the dexterity you can: It is not possible for me in these greate changes and variety of accidents which every day fall out, to give you any instructions for the carrying on my Service; nor can I dislike the methode the bearer tells me you intend to observe, but you will best judge with the advice of my friendes who are upon the place with you, what is most proper and reasonable to be done, towards the attayning the good end you ayme at: and I hope God will blesse your joynte endeavours for the peace and happynesse of the Nation: You will easily beleeve I have the sence I ought to have of your care and kindnesse, of which, if God blesse me, you shall find the effects….' With blank integral leaf (lacking a thin portion of the outer edge and with the remnants of a red wax seal). Some overall discoloration and staining and the text a little faded in places. Some tears at the folds and small areas of paper loss to two corners, the whole professionally restored to a good standard. G The present letter was written shortly before the Stuart Restoration of 1660. King Charles II issued the Declaration of Breda on 4th April 1660, making several promises in relation to the reclamation of the crown of England. On 8th May the Convention Parliament proclaimed that King Charles II had been the lawful monarch since the execution of King Charles I on 30th January 1649. King Charles II returned from exile and entered London on 29th May 1660, the day of his 30th birthday.

ROUSSEAU JEAN-JACQUES: (1712-1778) French Writer and Philosopher. A good autograph manuscript, one page, 4to, n.p., [Paris], n.d. (c.1745), in French. The page of manuscript, in Rousseau's hand, is from his unpublished work relating to the history of women and laws which he prepared between 1745-51 for his benefactress Louise Marie Madeleine Dupin. Rousseau writes his text in the right column of the page, the left reserved for additional notes. Rousseau refers to the orders-decrees given by Kings of France which he resumed in his work Ordonnances des Rois de France, (“Ordinances of the Kings of France”), and identifies it as taken from `Ordon[nances] des R[ois] de Fr[ance], L[ivre] 5, p[age] 45´, stating `Dans Les Lettres du Roy Charles 5, données en 1367, et confirmatives des privileges accordés aux habitans du Dauphiné par le Dauphin Humbert Second, il eu porté article 25 que le Dauphin, ses successeurs, ses officiers, ni les nobles du Pais ne pourront contraindre les f.(emmes) de quelque condition qu´elles soient à se marier contre leur volonté.´ (Translation “In the Letters of King Charles 5, given in 1367, and confirming the privileges granted to the inhabitants of Dauphiné by the Dauphin Humbert Second, article 25 had been included which the Dauphin, his successors, his officers, nor the nobles of the Country could not compel women, whatever their status is, to marry against their will  ”) Overall small age tone, mostly to the very slightly uneven edges, otherwise G At the time Rousseau wrote these pages, between 1745 and 1751, he was working as secretary to his benefactress Louise Marie Madeleine Dupin. Charles V (1338-1380) Also called “Le Sage” (“The Wise”), King of France 1364-80. His reign marked an early high point for France during the Hundred Years´ War, with his armies recovering much of the territory held by the English, and successfully reversed the military losses of his predecessors. Charles became Regent of France when his father John II was captured by the English at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. To pay for the defense of the kingdom, Charles raised taxes. As a result, he faced hostility from the nobility, and from the French bourgeoisie, and with a peasant revolt known as the Jacquerie. Charles overcame all of these rebellions, but in order to liberate his father, he had to conclude the Treaty of Bretigny in 1360, in which he abandoned large portions of south-western France to Edward III of England and agreed to pay a huge ransom. He established the first permanent army paid with regular wages, and by the end of Charles' reign, they had reconquered almost all the territories ceded to the English in 1360. Furthermore, the French fleet, managed to attack the English coast for the first time since the beginning of the Hundred Years´ War. Charles V died in 1380. He was succeeded by his son Charles VI, whose disastrous reign allowed the English to regain control of large parts of France.

SARTORIUS GEORGE: (1790-1885) British Admiral of the Fleet who was present at the surrender of Napoleon Bonaparte to Captain Frederick Maitland at Rochefort during the Napoleonic Wars. An interesting, lengthy A.L.S., G R Sartorius, four pages, 4to, Bath, 15th March n.y. (c.1833), to Sir Robert Peel, marked Private. The Admiral commences his letter 'Although unknown to you personally, & probably so, even by name, yet I cannot resist the temptation of thanking you for the Honourable & Liberal manner by which your conduct was contrasted with that of others, when my name, & what I honestly confess is also of the highest value, my British Professional Rank, became the subject of discussion in the House of Commons in Feby. last' and continues, in part, 'I wish to stand well in your opinion, not alone on account of your undoubted great talents, but more so because I respect your Private Character - permit me then to say & if you should take the trouble to make enquiries on the subject, the further evidence will still more satisfactorily establish my declaration; that in accepting the Command I now hold (totally unsought by me) I have been guided by no motives of selfish ambition & far less, of mercenary views. Having mixed much, both professionally & as a private traveller with the Nations of the South I have seen those countries blessed with every gift that a most Benevolent Providence could pass down upon those Lands, to make of them a Paradise, but instead of a Paradise I have seen those Lands, the seat of an intolerable Political Tyranny, of the most degrading Religious Bigotry & of the grossest injustice & prisons filled for crimes (so called) of opinion which the murderer and the robber were considered for comparison as far less guilty….I have looked at my own Country….& although bereft of a thousand advantages of sail & of climate become by a wholesome form of Government, rich, powerful & intellectually happy & the only prisoners & exiles, the offenders against the universal Laws of Nature & of God. During the time I commanded the Squadron….the Evil & Misery of a Despotic Government was still more closely brought to my view. Our ships were filled with the High & the Low, young & old for opportunities to pass into Foreign Countries for Refuge & the Prisons were already becoming overflowingly tenanted with the less fortunate….A dawning of Hope of  better days opened upon these men & they asked me to accept the Command of their Naval Forces. What could any individual possessing the smallest portion of Philanthropy or of Legitimate Ambition have done under such circumstances? What could I, knowing the Country, personally acquainted with so large a portion of the sufferers, feeling strongly the cruelty of their situation & (with wise management) almost sure of success, what could I have done? Nothing but what I have done - but, that not even a shadow of a mercenary nature might attach to me, although, with no private fortune of my own I gave up every personal guarantee for any future loss of my British Rank & acted against a clearly intimated assurance from other Quarters not to expect Protection from them….neither the ingratitude of the Nation I am now serving can destroy, or the greatest recompense they can confer, equal; the happiness of aiding in the Destruction of Despotism & freeing thousands of imprisoned & exiled victims & establishing a system of Mercy & Moderation in the room of one of Blood & Persecution. If the cause fails honest & good men will say I have failed (I shall trust) honourably & nobly in a just cause….I may add also that I feel convinced far less Blood will be shed for the establishment of our cause than what has flowed for the support of that, which is founded on Tyranny & perjury….' A letter of excellent content. Some extremely light, very minor traces of former mounting to the right edge of the final page, not affecting the text or signature, VG  Robert Peel (1788-1850) British Prime Minister 1834-35 & 1841-46. In 1831 Sartorius was engaged to command the small fleet of Dom Pedro, the former Emperor of Brazil, in the attempt to defeat his brother Dom Miguel, who had usurped the throne of Portugal. It was also the intention to install Pedro's daughter, Dona Maria II, as the rightful Queen. Sartorius successfully occupied Porto by July 1832, however he also had to contend with many difficulties - promised supplies rarely arrived and his crews consequently became mutinous or deserted. The Admiral spent a great deal of his own money in keeping the Fleet together, but when he threatened to sail off with it until he was paid, Dom Pedro sent two English officers to the flagship, one to arrest Sartorius and the other to take command. Sartorius promptly confined them both aboard. In June 1833 Sartorius handed command over to Sir Charles Napier. In consequence of serving in the armed forces of a foreign power, a position which Sartorius defends in the present letter, his name was struck off the British Navy List as an offence under the 1819 Foreign Enlistment Act. He was not restored until 1836

An excellent T.L.S., Norman Ramsey, one page, 4to, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 11th July 1960, to Lieutenant General Leslie R. Groves, on the printed stationery of the Lyman Laboratory of Physics at Harvard University. Ramsey expresses his delight at having received Groves's congratulatory letter, adding that he also appreciated 'your praise of my work at Los Alamos' and continuing 'In this connection I should also like to thank you again for the excellent support which you gave to me in our work at Los Alamos and Tinian. I am afraid that we made a number of difficult requests of you but you always supported them both vigorously and effectively. I can well remember my pleasant surprise in discovering that you had succeeded in extracting from the Air Force one of their very first B-29's. In fact you may not realize that the first B-29 ever to appear at Wright Field was the one for the Manhattan District project. For a long time we had a high priority with the Air Force solely on the basis of the fact that any project that could extract a B-29 must be of greatest priority'. In concluding Ramsey conveys his hope that, if Groves is in Cambridge, 'several of the old Los Alamos group here - like Ken Bainbridge, Francis Birch, George Kistiakowsky, etc., could get together with you for lunch or dinner'. HOME! SWEET HOME!: Henry Bishop (1787-1855) English composer of the early Romantic period, famous for the song Home! Sweet Home! A.L.S., Henry R Bishop, four pages, 8vo, London, 14th July 1848, to J. G. Jones. Bishop remarks that in the last letter he had received from his correspondent they had indicated that they may visit London, but presumes that this did not transpire, also referring to some accounts from Oliviers that were not intended to be received by Jones or Miss Thornton ('They have all however been paid') and further writing 'I regret that the “Muses” are met with so little favour in the north: here, if they put on a foreign garb they are received with acclamation; but if their dress be home-spun, Alas! for them, poor wretches, they may starve. It is a pity, nay more, it is seriously impolitic, there should be so little patriotism, in that respect, in this kingdom; and it is decidedly in the power of the merchants and middle classes not only to “get up the steam” but to turn the tide the other way'. Together with a second A.L.S., Henry R Bishop, one page, 8vo, T[heatre] R[oyal] D[rury] L[ane] (London), n.d. ('Saturday Evg'), to a gentleman. Bishop asks for 'as many more pieces (choruses particularly) as possible of the new opera (or operetta)' and adds that he will attend an appointment 'to consult on the alterations', although remarking that it may be better taking place at his apartments on Frith Street in Soho; John Howard Payne (1791-1852) American actor, poet and playwright, creator of the song Home! Sweet Home! in 1822. Ink signature ('John Howard Payne') and seven additional lines of text in his hand on an oblong 12mo piece clipped from the conclusion of a letter, the text stating, in part, 'Once more let me repeat my apologies for this intruding on you, and my reliance upon your sense of its proceeding from a proper precaution and a just confidence in your goodness of heart and eloquence and influence'; Adelina Patti (1843-1919) Italian opera singer who famously sang Home! Sweet Home! before Abraham Lincoln and his wife at the White House in 1862. A.Q.S., Adelina Patti, to one side of a 12mo card, New York, 18th December 1881. In bold purple ink Patti has penned the words 'Home sweet home! There is no place like home, - Craig-y-Nos Castle'. Some light age wear and age toning, most noticeable to Bishop's second letter. G to generally VG, 4 The song Home! Sweet Home! was adapted from John Howard Payne's opera Clari, or the Maid of Milan, and the melody was composed by Henry Bishop with lyrics by Payne. Bishop 'relaunched' the song in 1852 and it became a very popular parlour ballad in the United States during the American Civil War and beyond. When Patti sang Home! Sweet Home! at the White House, the Lincolns, mourning the death of their son, were moved to tears and requested an encore of the song.

The engraved location name 'Darkehm' is almost certainly a shortened version of Darkehmen, which is the former German name for the town of Ozyorsk located in the Kaliningrad district of modern-day Russia. During the 18th century Darkehmem was part of the Insterburg district of Eastern Prussia and is positioned almost exactly between Gdansk and Vilnius in Lithuania. The strong similarities between the current lot and the example by Johan Ernest Weichenthal of Danzig is notable in that it suggests that a Polish/Prussian regional style had been adopted during the mid to late 18th century. Condition Report: Movement is complete and fully working with no evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements with the probable exception of the bell hammers which may be later. The mechanism is fairly clean and retains gilding to the plates but with some slight bruising/scuffing around the pillar securing pins and overall edge wear etc. The chapter ring was probably originally silvered dial otherwise is in good original condition. The case is in good original condition retaining its original gilding albeit with overall moderate rubbing and wear. POSSIBLY FOR MARTIN ZOLLER, SOUTH GERMANY, SECOND QUARTER OF THE 17th CENTURYThe full plate movement with four baluster column pillars pinned through the backplate, the fusee going train with plain stop-iron block and verge escapement regulated by two-arm steel balance now sprung and with regulation slide adjustment to the backplate, the locking plate controlled strike train with standing barrel, foliate engraved and pierced gilt brass detent gate and sounding via a hammer positioned beneath the spring barrel on a bell fitted to the interior of the case, the backplate with asymmetric foliate scroll pierced and engraved balance cock decorated with tulip and other blooms issuing from a sculpted trefoil-shaped foot, set beside a countwheel with rosette engraved centre and numbered divisions, mainspring set-up ratchet and engraved initials M. Z., now with a later simple 4 inch slightly convex brass Arabic numeral dial with stylised cruciform hour markers and simple steel hand, the case hinged at the edge of the dial and secured by a hinged clasp, the interior fitted with a bell and the rear extensively pierced and engraved with scrolling flowering foliage around a central chrysanthemum bloom, the integral walls with twin conforming pierced bands divided by panels decorated with further flowerheads. The pillar plate 9.8cm (3.875ins) diameter; the case 10.8cm (4.25ins) diameter, 5cm (2ins) deep. Martin Zoller is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in Augsburg 1590-1633. The design and layout of the movement of the current lot is typical of central European examples made during the first half of the 17th century by which time the basic design had become relatively standardised and remained essentially unchanged for the next 100 years or so; the inherent portability of such timepieces no doubt contributed to timepieces of essentially the same format and exhibiting similar decoration being made right across Europe including London. Indeed, a slightly earlier clockwatch by Jacques Bulke, London, (which shares the same basic layout of the present lot) was sold at Sotheby's, London THE GEORGE DANIELS HOROLOGICAL COLLECTION 6th November 2012 (lot 38) for £21,000. This example was the usual smaller size and, being slightly earlier, was contained in a 'tambour' type case with the pierced side walls being vertical and made separately from the convex rear panel. The form of one-piece slightly rounded case, as used for the current lot, was introduced around 1620 and became standard for verge watches throughout their production. The distinctive engraved and pierced scrolling foliate backcock of the current lot can be very closely compared to that used on a vertical table clock movement by Hanns Buschmann, Augsburg, (circa 1620) which was sold at Patrizzi and Company, Milan, sale of PRE-PENDULUM EUROPEAN RENAISSANCE CLOCKS, SINGLE OWNER COLLECTION 24th May 2009 (lot 65). The strong similarity between these two balance cocks would suggest that they were made/finished in the same workshop, most likely a specialist 'finisher' to whom the work was outsourced. The sculpted trefoil-shaped foot to the cock is unusual and harks back to earlier examples with simpler sculpted steel balance cocks. The relatively large size of the current timepiece places it amongst a rare group of travelling timepiece which have been traditionally called 'coach watches'. Being too large to carry about the person such timepieces would have most likely been 'placed' either within lodgings whilst travelling or even onboard a ship. Although the original dial has been lost the rest of the present lot appears to have survived intact and free from significant alteration. Condition Report: The movement is essentially complete and survives in its original configuration albeit it with 'service' replacements to the trains and will run/beat when wound. The going train retains original flanged barrel, fusee and chain; the second, contrate and escape wheels have been re-pinioned and the escape wheel is a replacement. The contrate appears to have hand-cut teeth so are probably original. The escape wheel pivot potance has been repaired (contrate end). The strike train is also operational however will require adjustment/setting-up/synchronising. All wheels above the second wheel have been re-pinioned and the locking wheel is probably a replacement; the fly is definitely non-original. The countwheel detent has been repaired, the countwheel itself appears original. The backplate exhibits some pivot-closing marks and re-bushing to the fusee pivot as well as other re-bushing to pivots further down the train. The flat rim balance has significant age so could be original; the balance spring is a later addition and a regulation arm has been fitted annotated by 'dot' engraving 'L' and 'R' to the backplate. The balance cock is original but is now fitted with a pin to anchor the hairspring near the tip. The fusee spring set-up ratchet and pawl are probably replacements; the original sculpted steel locking spring is present but appears incomplete. Adjacent to the strike train winding square are two holes most likely from stopwork which is no longer present. Overall the mechanism is dirty/tarnished by does retain traces of original gilding. As catalogued the dial has been replaced. The hand is also later. The our wheel is hand-cut and has age so may be original. We believe the case and dial plate/ring to be original and are both in good original condition with no losses. The dial plate has three additional holes drilled for fitting a dial and the case has some slight shallow denting, the finish has been polished in the past hence gilding has been rubbed-off and the surface is now a tarnished/discoloured. The bell applied to the interior of the case appears original, is free from cracks and rings well. There is no winding key present. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 184

A SWISS LOUIS XVI ORMOLU MOUNTED CARRARA MARBLE SMALL MANTEL CLOCKUNSIGNED, LATE 18th CENTURYThe circular twin going barrel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by disc bob pendulum now incorporating rise/fall regulation to suspension, the backplate with visible rack-strike work over stamped serial number 255 to the flattened lower margin, the 4 inch circular white enamel convex Roman numeral dial with Arabic five minutes to outer track and fine scroll chased and engraved gilt brass hands set behind a hinged convex glazed engine-milled bezel, the case with oval vase surmount issuing gilt foliate sprays and with husk festoon linked twin scroll handles, over bowfronted arched central section with tied floral and laurel wreath decoration beneath the dial, bead-decorated surround and capped with out-swept acanthus foliage connecting with the sculpted marble hipped scroll side ornaments each enveloped by gilt leafy vine trails, the bowed breakfronted D-ended base with inset panels decorated with looped gilt leafy trails, on four gilt disc feet applied onto a further conforming cavetto moulded plinth.39.5cm (15.5ins) high, 25cm (10ins) wide, 10cm (4ins) deep. Condition Report: The movement is in relatively clean condition; the going train will run, the strike train mainspring is 'slipping' hence either requires a replacement or, in the case of the spring just becoming loose within the barrel, the original re-attaching. The suspension would have most likely originally been silk suspension with a regulation post (for winding the thread) the present rise/fall arrangement is very well executed and connects to a square now positioned to the dial above twelve o'clock (between stamped letters 'A' and 'R'). The backplate has a few small spare holes towards the top right - these are almost certainly left over from the earlier silk suspension arrangement and possibly from an alternative bell stand (the present stand may well be a later replacement). The dial has poorly executed filling to chipping around the right-hand winding hole; the left hand hole has some miniscule edge fritting otherwise enamel appears to be in fine condition. The case is in sound original condition with damage fundamentally limited to minor edge chipping a wear to the marble (most noticeably around the case). The mounts appear complete and undamaged and retain original gilding with minimal wear; the vine trail mounts to the side ornaments are loose/wobbly. The marble is very dirty/dusty hence the appearance of the clock would no doubt be transformed with a good sensitive clean.Clock has pendulum but no winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 109

A FRENCH LACQUERED BRASS FOUR-GLASS MANTEL CLOCKRICHARD ET CIE, PARIS, LATE 19th CENTURYThe circular eight-day two train bell striking movement with visible Brocot escapement regulated by twin capsule mercury compensated pendulum with Brocot type regulation to suspension, the backplate stamped with oval caduceus R C trademark over serial number 2723, the circular two-piece white enamel Roman numeral dial with visible escapement to the recessed centre and blued steel spade hands set within gilt ogee moulded bezel,, the bevel-glazed case with cavetto moulded cornice over caddy moulded uprights, on skirt base incorporating bracket feet to the rounded angles; with original cavetto moulded wooden stand with bun feet. The clock 29.5cm (11.75ins) high, 18cm (7ins) wide, 14cm (5.5ins) deep; the clock on stand 23.5cm (13.25ins) high overall. Richard and Company are recorded in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS Their history and development as founded in Paris in 1848 and setting-up a London retail outlet in 1857. By 1867 the branch was located at 24 Cannon Street and signed clocks in English. Richard et Cie were prolific makers of better quality carriage clocks as well as other types of decorative mantel clock who received an Honourable Mention in the 1889 Paris Exposition. Condition Report: Movement appears complete and all-original. The strike train is operational however sounds at around ten-past the hour/half hour hence positioning of minute hand requires adjustment. The going train will wind and appears free from visible damage however the escapement will not beat; this is most likely due to the mechanism being gummed-up (but we cannot confirm this without removing the dial) hence a clean and overhaul is required. The dial appears free form any visible damage. The front door glass has some slight chipping to the upper right and lower left corners; the rear door to the upper right; and both side glasses to upper left otherwise case is in good overall condition with some patchy discolouration/tarnishing to the lacquer finish in places. The stand is in good original condition with fading/wear to velvet top lining and slight wear/rubbing.Clock has original pendulum but no winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer
