Chinese Fossiliferous Limestone Snuff Bottle. 19th/20th century. Of Pear-form, the creamy grey matrix suffused with black chips. The material from which the stone is made is sedimentary rock - the sediment of the seabed in which various marine and other organisms cement themselves together under great pressure. Born in 1939 in Yunnan Province, Zeng Xiao Lian is a talented Chinese artist. He worked as a senior engineer of the Botanical Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences. In addition, Zeng Xiao Lian received artistic training in Beijing. The artist has painted a series of beautiful botanical images of flowers and birds. These accurate detailed images have been published in more than fifty books, including Flora of China, Flora and Rhododendrons Yunnan and others. Paintings by Zeng Xiao Lian participated in numerous national exhibitions in China, as well as in the United States, Canada and Australia. Indigenous to western China, the R. fictolacteum also thrives in American regions boasting mild, humid climates. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commerative Cover for Old Glory's Proudest Moments postmarked on the anniversary February 23, 2002. For six months, Americans had bombarded the Pacific island of Iwo Jima, hoping to drive the Japanese from a base that would be the perfect striking point against Tokyo. February 19, 1945, the United States armada launched its land assault on the island -- and for the next thirty-five days, the earth erupted in titanic thunder. Nature's own devilish defenses were enough to make the taking of Iwo Jima nearly impossible. The island was a volcanic ash heap ... barren, waterless and ripe with the stench of sulfur. But, in addition to its natural obstacles, the Japanese had fortified the island with underground garrisons, transforming it into a deadly anthill of tunnels. On the second day of the assault, the Marines began the grim chore of securing Mount Suribachi, at the southern tip of Iwo Jima. After battling the Japanese for every inch of ground they covered, the Americans finally reached the crater at the summit. There, soldiers Ira H. Hayes -- later to win the Congressional Medal of Honor -- Franklin R. Sousley, Michael Strank, John H. Bradley, Rene A. Gagnon and Harlon H. Block raised Old Glory ... claiming the hill for America. Many battles remained to be fought before the Japanese surrendered Iwo Jima to the Americans completely, and nearly seven thousand brave American men gave their lives to claim that eight mile stretch of barren soil. A pair of Edwardian Crown Devon Fieldings painted ceramic plaques, by R. Hinton, each depicting two spaniel gun dogs looking at partridge and pheasant game birds in flight, one signed lower left, the other lower right, brown printed factory marks and painted number '0929' to backs, each 18 by 23.5cm, in gilt slip and wide oak frame, 34 by 39.5cm. (2)Heavily crazed throughout, there is some discolouration to the top right of one plaque.
