Lot 1368

Robin Christian Andersen* Blumenlandschaft, 1928 Öl auf Leinwand, 86,5 x 115 cm Signiert rechts unten: R. C. Andersen Richard Kantor (Erwerb direkt vom Künstler, siehe Andersens Beitrag „Erkenntnis“ in: Österreichische Kunst. Monatshefte für bildende Kunst, 1. Jg., 1929/30, Heft 10, August 1930, S. 3-8, Abb. (Franz Smola) Robin Christian Andersen* Flower landscape, 1928 oil on canvas, 86.5 x 115 cmsigned on the lower right: R. C. Andersen Richard Kantor (directly obtained from the artist, see Andersen's entry „Erkenntnis“ in: Österreichische Kunst. Monatshefte für bildende Kunst, vol. 1, 1929/30, issue 10, August 1930, p. 3-8, ill. p. 8); since the mid-1930s private property, Austria; acquired by the former owner from an art dealer c. 1970; by inheritance since 1983 private property, Austria This work was documented by Dr. Franz Smola for the catalogue raisonné Robin Christian Andersen, Belvedere Catalogues Raisonnés series.

Bowman MBELieutenant Colonel Robert Bowman (Bob) joined the 16th / 5th Lancers at the age of 19 in York 1934 serving for fifty years continuously from 1934 – 1984 with the regiment starting as a from the lowest ranks and mucking horse stables out to holding the title of Lieutenant Colonel and receiving the MBE in 1958.Bob Bowman’s career truly began when he moved with the regiment to Hounslow in 1937 where they were based for the 1937 Coronation of King George VI, Bob was in the Musical Ride at Olympia. In November of the same year the Lancers sailed to India and here Bob Bowman was present for the final ceremonial mounted parade for the 16th / 5th Lancers on 1st January 1939 at Risalpur to mark the anniversary of Queen Victoria becoming Empress of India (the equivalent in India of Trooping the Colour) Bob Bowman was to return to the UK upon the outbreak of WWII before the regiment then sailed to North Africa to embark on operation Torch. It was here that Bob Bowman learnt skills that were to be used for life when he was drafted into the Quartermaster’s department. Bob Bowman served with the regiment throughout both the North Africa campaign and the Italian Campaign.Bob Bowman’s importance in the Quartermaster’s department cannot be overstated. He was to revolutionise systems and set new standards so significant that the rest of the Army would move over to new methods of working as devised by Bob. Quartermasters of other regiments were sent to see Bob Bowman and his advice and professionalism was sought and appreciated by both the QM’s and Bobs commanding officers.Amongst many other achievements Bob Bowman was in the representative party of the 15th / 6th Lancers to be invited to Windsor Castle during the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Upon reaching retirement age for active service Bob Bowman took on the role of Regimental Secretary at Home Headquarters.

A similar mug is illustrated by H Rissik Marshall, Coloured Worcester Porcelain (1954) pl. 31, fig. 674. Another mug from the City of Birmingham Museum Collection is illustrated by Franklin Barrett, Worcester Porcelain and Lund's Bristol (1966) pl. 10c. One from the Rous Lench Collection, later in the Sir Jeremy Lever and Crane Collections was sold by Bonhams, 7 March 2007, lot 21 and 31 March 2010, lot 60, respectively. The present lot being almost identical with the addition of a flying insect painted on the reverse. Two smaller examples are in the Ashmolean Museum, one illustrated by H Rissik Marshall, Coloured Worcester Porcelain (1954), pl.25, no.563. A matching water bottle and basin also from Rous Lench was gifted to the Museum of Royal Worcester. Three bell-shaped mugs with the same decoration are recorded, each inscribed on the base 'ExL 1754'. One of these from the Grant Dixon Collection was at Ampleforth Abbey. The second is in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the third is at Colonial Williamsburg. These mugs were instrumental in dating of early 'Scratch Cross' class and by association it is possible to confidently place the current lot around 1754.Although not painted with this pattern, a closely related vase, clearly painted by the same hand from the R David Butti Collection was sold by Bonhams, 10 May 2006, lot 33. In each case, the painting is very finely executed, with great care given to the detailing and composition. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A very similar vase, possibly the pair to this lot, is in the H Rissik Marshall Collection and is illustrated in Coloured Worcester Porcelain (1954), pl.13 no.233. The inspiration would appear to have been 1730s Meissen, an influence acknowledged by the use of kakiemon sprigs on the shoulder similar in taste to the 'indianische Blumen' sprigs used at Meissen. The primary prints on this vase also occur on a pair of scale blue ground hexagonal vases in the British Museum, see R L Hobson, Catalogue of the Frank Lloyd Collection of Worcester Porcelain (1923), pl.78.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The same bird panel is found on a fluted creamboat illustrated by Simon Spero, The A J Smith Collection (2006), p.162, fig.74. Lot 45

A Worcester tankard, circa 1755-56With a gently spreading foot and a broad strap handle, painted in Kakiemon colours with a version of the 'Sir Joshua Reynolds' pattern, a long-tailed bird perched on a tall rock from which flowering branches grow to either side, 9.1cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceJohn Alchin collectionThis is a particularly rare and early example of the pattern on Worcester porcelain. Although clearly Japanese in style, the precise origin of this pattern remains unclear. A possible source is illustrated by R L Hobson, Worcester Porcelain (1910), pl.XXXIV where a close-up of the painting on a Japanese vase is shown alongside two Worcester pieces which appear to follow it very closely. The present lot differs slightly from these, the tail feathers of the bird being smaller and less curvaceous. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 5

A Worcester coffee cup, circa 1752-53Of deep U shape with a slightly everted rim, the double scrolled handle with a sharply pointed thumbrest, painted in kakiemon style with the 'Banded Hedge' pattern of two flowering branches issuing from three banded hedges, a phoenix-like bird in flight to one side, 6.4cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceGwen and Ronald McKnight Melvin Collection, Simon Spero exhibition 2007, no.28John Alchin CollectionThis is a particularly early version of the 'Banded Hedge' pattern, lacking the overglaze blue included in pieces of slightly later date, see lots 46, 101 and 102 in this sale. Presumably, the blue proved difficult to fire. The fine potting and unusually crisp handle confirm the early date. It is possible that this group was painted by a single hand working outside of the factory. Sucriers of this period are scarce. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
